Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY benchmark results don't break any new ground (video)

0. phoneArena posted on 07 Apr 2011, 09:15

Cold blooded benchmarking is what reveals the actual performance of a chip and in the case of the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY it's a key part as the gaming centric handset relies on graphically intensive games. But how does it rate to the rest out there?…

This is pretty disappointing, but not all that surprising.

I don't understand the strategy or the timing with the release of this device. It's clearly less powerful than the upcoming NGP, and Sony doesn't seem to really want to promote this phone as the "official" Playstation phone- other than Play being incorporated into the name one would barely know it has anything to do with the playstation brand. It would make a lot more sense if they just promoted it as and Android gaming phone instead, because right now the expectation is for this to be on par with at least a PSP and that doesn't seem to be the case.

The Xperia Play is certainly not a monster in terms of hardware....but it's a great attempt which will certainly get better in the future......From the day you guys got your hands on the device you spend more time trying to find faults and criticizing the device. There is no need to put a single core device against dual core devices as we all know which one(s) will score better.

now.. lets pit it against a voodoo enabled galaxyS and see what happens. Its samsungs crappy RFS filing system that slows it down. Once voodoo converts it to ext4 it starts to show its beastly power.

real world though, there isnt a game out that can match the unlocked power of the hummingbird chipset in the galaxyS, much less anything dual core. So while its nice to look at benchmarks, when playing actual games the difference will be negligable. Were probably 1-2 years away from any android game that fully taxes the phones that are out now, so the Xperia play will be fine for 99% of games for the life of the contract... and it has a full keypad.

its not ment to be on the "same level" as the PSP, which is a dedicated gaming device. But if it can give you 75% of the quality of the PSP while doing all other android functions as well, i'd say its a much better deal than the PSP.

IMO - Wait for the Xperia Play II

This device is just a teaser for what SE is looking at doing on this platform.

I just hope they sell enough to make a 2nd version - and watch what SE does for updates & long term support for this device to see if they really have turned a new leaf...
