Soldier's life saved by his Apple iPhone 5s; Apple waits three months to reward this hero

The Apple iPhone 5s has a lot of cool features including a fingerprint scanner embedded in the home button. But nowhere will you find any documentation stating that the phone is supposed to be equipped with lifesaving armor. Surely the iPhone is not tested to see if it can withstand the blast from a bomb. Yet, that is exactly what happened in Afghanistan...

They didn't mention anything about bullet. It was a piece of the bomb that the phone helped to absorb some of the force. If he had a HTC One, it would have stopped it :P

This is the difference between Steve and Tim. Steve would have personally presented a replacement iP5S the moment he heard about the iPhone taking one for the team (camera crew in tow of course).

yea, steve would have gone to him and personally handed him a new iphone and maybe had a cup of coffee but tim, he only gave him an iphone because it would be bad publicity if he didnt, smdh

I'm sure Steve would have also given him a handy and sang him to sleep every night. Then single handedly ended the war and revived Bin Laden just so he could personally shoot him. Jobs was a great business man. That's it. Stop worshiping him for what he wasn't.

Correct me if i'm wrong but isn't it likely that he was saved by the battery rather than the metal body of the iPhone. I recall you guys posting an article about an Evo 4G (along with other similar articles) doing the same thing because of the battery. ....don't feed the metal vs plastic feud!

ya it was probably the battery but also the shape of a ball bearing is more spherical and is more easily stopped by just metal sheets than an armour peircing round which wouldve made quick work of any phone, not just an iphone

Well truth be told if he had an HTC one he might have saved himself and his buddy from shrapnel (you know the one who died but wasn't mentioned because he didn't have an iPhone on him) because it would have covered more space. Glad to see Alan pushing the bounds on Apple endorsement instead of basic human decency.

Maybe it didn't say it, cuz it didn't happen...hater.

If you look (doesn't require that much brain power for you I hope), there is an attempted exit hole. What is being said, is if that was plastic, there would be an attempt, and it would succeed at going through. The aluminum helped stop. Regardless, the battery was fhuked, if it did go through that part.

So you're a specialist in ballistics now too in addition to an iFan?

Just a specialist in common sense. Something people should look into.

Yeah the old article was about the EVO 3D and both times it was the batteries that stopped it.

It was the dullness of the shrapnel and the harder battery shell which saved him. The aluminum is quite soft on the phone and is easily pierceable

Actually, I'd go further than that. The iPhone's tiny and thin battery almost cost the soldier his life. If he had a phone with a thicker battery, it could easily have stopped the shrapnel in it's entirety.

So soldiers die in bombings, no one cares. One soldiers survives, saved by his iphone blocking some shrapnel (pure luck), and a ton of people are offering to buy him a new one and Apple is apparently the devil for not offering a new one on the spot. People are so weird. . .

I honestly don't know why people care about the phone. It's just a phone and the same situation could have played out for better or worse with any mobile device shielding the blow. It's like you said, it was pure coincidental luck.

stealthd: do you have a reading impairment or something? The article stated Apple gave the soldier a choice of a new phone, and the soldier declined a new phone. Please LEARN TO READ like the rest of us and stop making sh*t up.

"Frank's Apple iPhone 5s absorbed some of the blast with its metal body able to absorb part of the impact, and deflect some of the shrapnel. If he had been sporting a plastic phone that day, Frank's body might have been riddled with holes," everyone knows what this means. We can all try to twist this into saying "any" phone could have done this but metal phones pack a punch.

yeah "plastic phones" :D being a little sarcastic are we Alan? :P

First of all out didn't absorb anything beyond one piece. It's funny though what if it was a Samsung and the reverse happened. Glad he's alive but f**k you Apple seriously not giving him a new iPhone. The Hell is their problem handing over his phone that clearly took a small part in him staying alive. My opinion stands, Apple sucks

Apple will give him a new iPhone. So don't say that Apple will not give him. Hater -_-

Nokia should give him one of those Lumia, pretty much sure it can defend more than an iPhone!

If you dont want to die, get out if Afghanistan and support your families. SIMPLE

A soldier goes where he's told. He's supporting his family by doing his job. Your comment was very SIMPLE MINDED. It's Congress and the president that need to take the hint and pull our troops out so they don't die.
