Sharp reportedly working on a 4K (4096 x 2160) resolution smartphone display panel

One of the recent pop-trends amongst smartphone manufacturers is the strive towards higher resolution screens and higher pixel densities. Just 3 years ago, flagships were topping out at 720p (1280 x 720) and sporting PPI densities well above 300, though, when the larger-screen trend hit, phone suppliers started looking for ways to bump the resolutions even further. In the past couple of years, we've seen a jump from HD (1280 x 720) to FHD (1920 x 1080), to this year's QHD (2560 x 1440).

Too far? Did you not say anything over 1080p was pointless? Hmmmm...

Well, I just upgraded to the Xperia Z from the Xperia P that time, so you can't blame someone that came from 540p for saying that. Right now, I think that 1080p is already enough and 2K is the limit. 4K? Too far.

I think it just makes business sense. Cram everything in there and market it as having all the latest bells and whistles. For me personally a 1080p display is enough, though I wouldn't mind a phone with QHD or even UHD if it doesn't hit battery life, as technology keeps on evolving.

Business sense makes on both by keeping these latest techs and by not a marketing way having latest test is a way to go..but in a cost saving way(how apple does for profit margins), not having is better

Real success comes when u have a far view..if all the people in this world try to limit then perhaps we would still be using landline phones

I think screen nowadays should be measured by ppi, not resolution, 400 ppi should be enough unless you have Legolas 's eye and a bad OCD.

This is when technology takes a step back from practicality to just numbers. Can we build better phones and stop worrying about bragging rights? At least Apple can say that and I'm no Apple fan boy.

Lol Apple doesn't give you low specs for anything except increasing their profit margins. If the iPad air 2 needed 2 gb of ram than I see no reason why other IOS 8 devices don't need it. All of them run IOS the same. Apple needed and could have given you much more but profit margins first fir them. Oh and about Apple not bragging.......rofl

Apple refines and uses proven tech to make a consistent product. Android OEM's use experimental and unproven tech to make "innovative?" products, or swing dummies with spec flaunting; leading to an inconsistent experience. That's why the iPad Air 2 has 2gb RAM. Future proofing the design for a multi-window in future iPad software. Using a screen that's actually big enough to multi-window effectively. Apple isn't going to throw this feature on every Apple device: Only the ones that will be able to use it effectively. This is fine for Apple, because their penchant for making devices that work effectively set them apart: Their sales do not follow the This is why Samsung and others use more RAM: The user experience sucks with 1gb RAM when using their devices. They can't afford to skimp on RAM because it destroys user enjoyment: And consumers know a laggy device doesn't live up to the standard the iPhone sets. The inclusion of more RAM is a cover for their poorly written software, and background data and location collection thats always going on behind the scenes with G Services.

Lol puleeze. So the iPad air 2 is worth future proofing but the 6 plus isn't? They wanted a higher profit margin on the 6 plus plain and simple. They could have added 2gb and they should have. Just like the 6 plus should have had the A8x and the iphone 6 should have had a 1080p screen.

The main reason for apple not to keep the latest and greatest available parts is profit margin..period..

I'm doing just fine with a 720p display, so I think this is definitely a complete waste of power and battery...

I thought you said 720 was unacceptable somewhere? Haha

50. fzacek

Posts: 2486; Member since: Jan 26, 2014

Yes, it's unacceptable on a flagship-priced phone, especially if it uses a Pentile-matrix, but otherwise it is perfectly usable. My point is that 1080p is plenty enough for flagship-priced devices, and even 2K is overkill...

I will not look at my smartphone using a Microscope . So , I don't care . And besides even 2K display phones can't give long battery back up . I don't want my phone yo get out of charge in 7-8 hrs . 4K is acceptable in 8-12 inch tablets , but not in smartphones right now .

Top end desktop graphics chips struggle with 4k. What chance does a phone have? I'm all for the never ending march of technological progress but eventually there comes a time when we've reached a pinnacle. For me that was 1080p. R&D should now turn to energy efficiency, contrast and colour reproduction.
