When Samsung first introduced fingerprint scanners to its smartphones, the company chose to integrate them into its famous home button. Then, following the switch over to the newer Infinity Displays last year, which ultimately resulted in the removal of the home button, the brand moved the fingerprint readers over to the rear.

But now, if one reliable tipster is indeed correct, Samsung may be preparing to follow in the footsteps of Sony and Motorola by releasing a smartphone with a fingerprint scanner integrated into the aluminum frame later this year.

At this point in time, it’s unclear what kind of specifications the smartphone will bring to the table. Considering Samsung no longer has any 2018 flagship offerings in the pipeline, though, it seems fairly obvious that it will be a mid-range offering. Assuming that this is accurate, the release could potentially be related to the upcoming Galaxy A8+ (2018) successor that recently appeared on Samsung's website. After all, it would allow the South Korean giant to create a slightly more seamless design and would avoid any awkward positionings on the rear.

If Samsung’s side positioning of the fingerprint scanner proves to be a hit with fans, the company may well adopt a similar design on next year’s Galaxy S10 trio. After all, while earlier reports claimed that in-display fingerprint readers would be included on Samsung’s next flagships, information that surfaced earlier today revealed that this is no longer planned. Instead, the company is looking at alternative positions for the scanners.
