Samsung shows off its next-generation smartphone display: 5.5-inch, VR ready with 806ppi pixel density

During last week's Display Week festivities in San Francisco, Samsung showed off its next generation smartphone display. The 5.5-inch screen features a resolution of 2160 x 3840. That works out to a pixel density of 806ppi, which is 44.7% higher than the pixel density found on today's displays. Those who had a look at the screen commented on how bright and clear it looked...

It's good, but it was innovation last year when Sony did it. LG, Samsung, and others just license and produce most of their AMOLED tech, while Universal Display does the heavy lifting.

Sony one is LCD and also not useful. This one is a stunning AMOLED and would be highly useful in a VR

Sony didnt do it right, most of what you see from the screen is 1080p, unless you use the stock gallery. This screen that Samsung is making, will always be 4k on the screen.

You do understand that these high res displays are shown up at trade shows well before it gets used in a product?

Did they really need to mention night shift? I mean night shift wasn't pioneered by Apple. Furthermore, since Samsung are just demoing the display, it seems that their method is hardware based rather than software based so thus dissimilar to Apple's.

24. sukrith2194 unregistered

This is iPhonearena... what did you expect? Night shift was a copy of f.lux to begin with for which I think the developer sued Apple asking them to open the source so that they can show the similarities between f.lux and night shift!

They didn't sue, they demanded the iDictator let their app back into the store: but apple being crappIe, just seems to have ignored the request to avoid any iSheep doubting that Night Shift is all original...

My bad! But apple is and will always be class 1 Aholes!

I have a Sony Xperia Z5 Premium which has an awesome 5.5 inch 4K display with great whites and blacks(which is remarkable for an ips display). Unfortunately, the battery doesn't last long, despite having a capacity of 3430 mah. With the screen in full brightness, you can get at least two hours of juice before the phone shuts down.

No phone will last you more than that with brightness set on 100%(maybe with the exception of the S7E and Galaxy A9). I do know that the panel on the Z5p is dimmer than the majority of flagship phones out there, but give it a try with the brightness set on automatic. Your eyes will adjust, and I am sure you will get 4+ hrs of sot.

I prefer a VR with its own screen. That screen density is just consuming the phones energy for nothing when we are not using VR which is 99% of the time.

I would also consider VR with inbuilt display but not for the reason for energy consumption. They would probably make it last longer than current gen devices. But it's so annoying to put phone in a VR and again take it off and again put it back

Nope. I have iterated multiple times that this VR movement is nothing but the vocal minority clamoring for attention. "HEY LOOK!!! I'M PLAYING A GAME IN 3D!!!! INCREDIBLE!!!" is what they say. I have better stuff to do than spend thousands on gaming lol.

29. sukrith2194 unregistered

It's not just gaming dude... it has everything from making u feel like it in a theatre to 360° videos, street view etc! It's just aiming to give an immersive experience!! Just wait till apple brings out expensive as hell VR unit which does the same things as the Google cardboard with their new phone only supporting it and everyone will go crazy! They'll also start comparing that piece of s**t with the under $5 cardboard and speak down on everyone who ever tried to bring out VR! It's imminent... wait for it

Um the push isn't coming from gaming. It seems to be coming from broadcasting. I'm hearing that ton of major sports events are shown through VR sets. In fact few of my co-workers used it to watch the Masters earlier this year

I thought the same thing, what's the big deal over VR and then I got to see it for my self . A guy my husband works with had his at work one day and I happened to stop by. It was pretty cool and now I will be getting one soon.

That sad moment when a 1080 iPhone using googles cardboard.. Looks 100% better than a 2k S7 with Samsung VR.. I'm going to wait to see before I get excited or look forward if they couldnt out do an unoptimised iPhone/Google cardboard combo.

What sad moment are you taking about? That is a 100% lie. The iPhone with Google Cardboard looks like garbage compared to Gear VR with an S7. The iPhone is for scumbags anyway.

"The iPhone is for scumbags anyway." Is it really necessary to call people using a specific brand of phones "scumbags"? What if I said "Android is for poor people anyway"? This s**t is sad man. People insulting each other over damn phones, smh.

Said like a true android fanboy who has no idea what they are talking about.. Gear VR with an S7 is Blurry and very pixelated, and in fact looking at sites like android central.. Google Cardboard is still the preferred VR to use as its super cheap, less bury, less pixelated and more open (more apps). The biggest problem android users think samsung is having is that the Gear VR is its magnify lenses, With Google Cardboard, iPhone, Note 4, S7 you will get a less pixelated more focus image than using the Gear VR.

You are completely clueless. You have never used the S7 on Gear VR from your description. The S7 with Gear VR blows away Google Cardboard. Google Cardboard is for children. It is cheap for a reason because it is terrible. Please don't mention the iPhone anymore because the resolution sucks and is last century.

Seriously why be a troll and act so ignorant..Google it.. everyone on Reddit, Androidcentral and Android Authority agrees and blames it on how new the tech is and like i said before something to do with Sasmungs magnify lenses. So you never used an iPhone before? here watch an Android Fanboy say he couldn't spot the difference between Apples resolution and FHD resolution. Skip to 4:04 to see it.. iPhone 6s Plus Unboxing by an Android Fanboy! So please explain to me how iPhones last century resolution matched that of FHD? Holding an iPhone and a S7.. both phones are a shape and clear as each other (although OLED makes the colors so more better on the S7)
