Samsung shows off its next-generation smartphone display: 5.5-inch, VR ready with 806ppi pixel density

During last week's Display Week festivities in San Francisco, Samsung showed off its next generation smartphone display. The 5.5-inch screen features a resolution of 2160 x 3840. That works out to a pixel density of 806ppi, which is 44.7% higher than the pixel density found on today's displays. Those who had a look at the screen commented on how bright and clear it looked...

Some will always see you as a hater if you dare criticize their divine company instead of mindlessly worshipping them. It happens on every side of the fence. I simply will never support any of the following acts, regardless of company: - Privacy invasion - Hypocrisy - Reality distortion/lies/ignorance - Stifleling competition with stolen patents - Inferior yet overpriced price tag Whenever a die hard fan calls me a hater, it's guaranteed that I'm calling out their divine company for 1 or all of the above.

macbook screens are awesome top of the line, perfect for Photoshop lightroom, well only very slow if no dedicated gpu. iphone is total joke couple years back comparing to other phones, especially screens

That's because of optimization... for the price of a Macbook u can get a better laptop with way more stuff on it and an improved display running windows or Ubuntu or Linux or whatever! If u compare a $2000 Macbook to an alien ware or any $2000 laptop ull see the difference in specs!

and people like you would pretend that you can differentiate between 400ppi and 800ppi. SONY already had it, but nobody bats an eye, when Samsung does it, "ZOMG 2160x3840 resolution, so high, much innovation", seems familiar, huh?

Thats because Sony displays have terrible quality, resolution is just a part of the story, 2.8 gamma, 10000K and pathetic backlight bleed/viewing angle.

That was last year, it might be well developed this year. It's the fact Sony started it.

What rock did you just crawl out from? 4K for just regular app use that has been going on is useless. This resolution will be just-as useless for such purpose, it'll be highly useful in solving the VR complaints reviewers had about the Gear VR...

For now it's really is a gimmick. The current vr are very blurry and gives people headaches and all. There is no doubt they will be better in the future.

Yes they are proud of their purchase, getting updates like clockwork while you have to buy a new Samsung if you want the latest Android update. How's the stage fright down there?

Sony makes a 4k phone and nobody bats an eye. Samsung or Apple create ultra high definition phone displays and everybody lose their minds.

Who exactly is "losing their minds" over this display?

It's a joker internet meme. A figure of speech on things people go gaga when something is made. People today are so single-minded and literal, I'll have to call you Dax if you take my previous comment seriously.

4k on that phone is totally useless.. and paired with overheating processor, its impossible to enjoy 4k VR experience on that phone... and on daily usage, its just a 1080p screen

No one has lost his mind over this. And this attempt is completely different than Sony's experiment. With the Z5 premium, you can only use the 4k resolution in watching 4k videos in the gallery app, which I will always defend my initial thoughts, that a 4k screen for media consumption is stupid. Now when we talk about VR experience, it is a whole lot different story. If you ever used a VR, you would know that a 2k screen does a decent job, decent because you will easily still see pixels. That's why a 4k screen for the sake of bragging rights, is nothing like a practical 4k screen that VR users will find very useful.

2K is crap for VR. but well it's Samsung, so it's decent.

It's blurry and gives me headache. I have a gear VR collecting dust. It's a good step in the right direction by Samsung. He is right in saying that VR is currently crappy.

Just an old school Japanese company which is about to quit the mobile business soon just like Sharp. Some rumors suggest it's switching to adult industry for AKB48

A sad Sony fanboy is at it again. Z5 premium is nothing but a flop. Sony has already known its place. The poor and embattled firm should not try to embarrasse itself anymore. I know you hate hearing truth, but you need to let it go.

I don't hate on Apple or Samsung but I think people should give credit where credit is due or otherwise shut the hell up. Looking forward to good things this year

Cool! What's this Bio Blue? Hopefully VR gets an upgrade, I want to see it being more then a gimmick. It has huge potential. Maybe in the next Samsung smartphone they could add a VR headset in the box? It would get a lot more people into VR, As well as make up for the loss of battery life and performance by giving you VR straight out of the box.

"Maybe in the next Samsung smartphone they could add a VR headset in the box? It would get a lot more people into VR" They already provide that with the S7: http://www.phonearena.com/news/Samsung-Galaxy-S7S7-edge-buyers-can-now-claim-their-free-Gear-VR-headset-games-and-more_id79006 "As well as make up for the loss of battery life and performance by giving you VR straight out of the box." It doesn't fall short in it's worst case: http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s7_edge_battery_life_both_exynos_and_snapdragon-blog-17325.php compared to its predecessor: http://blog.gsmarena.com/samsung-galaxy-s6-galaxy-s6-edge-battery-life-tests/ and definitely not compared to the iPhone 6s: http://www.gsmarena.com/apple_iphone_6s_battery_life_test-blog-14281.php nor 6s+: http://www.gsmarena.com/apple_iphone_6s_plus-review-1316p3.php
