Samsung's Galaxy S10 5G gets a price tag that... actually sounds pretty fair

The Samsung Galaxy S10 5G is obviously not what we'd call affordable, but considering everything you're getting here, this absolute powerhouse doesn't feel overpriced either.

"$1,200 or even $1,300 sounds fair to us" - is by far no a fair price for a phone. this trend needs to stop. your payment did not increase since 2 years ago by 50% like this trend did. f**k them and their already putrid rich investors.

Absolutely agree. $1000+ for a phone is too much

You broke people need to realize, you gotta pay to play with the latest technology. This is not just the latest tech, but a miniaturized one at that. You have no idea how much R&D went into these devices. You think they fall from trees?

despite them being much smaller, they are still MILES away from competing with a full fledged flagship PC or Laptop

@ eausa, Perceived value has nothing to do with how much money one has or makes. I have more then enough money to buy whatever I want. Yet, I agree with the above comments that these devices are not worth the prices that are being asked these days. To each their own... Cheers.

your point is totally valid, but I don't think you US citizens should be the ones complaining. This phone is likely less than 1/4th of your monthly payment. In most other countries, it is more than the minimum monthly wage. I agree it's too much for OTHER countries.

Why do you care about the existence of 1k$ phones when you can buy in the range of 100-999$?

When you consider the specs inside, and the capabilities, which equal or exceed many laptops costing $1000; i would say this is a good price for a full computer that has phone capabilities, that fit in your pocket. Show me a laptop with 100% equal capabilities for $1000.

Explain to me how ARM architecture processors are more powerful than the x86 processors used in laptops priced at $1000.

Buy a cheaper phone, a lot of money goes into this phone and less people are buying phones nowadays so they need to continue making a profit, I bought a used pixel 2 with a cracked lens for 125$, no need to buy the latest most expensive phone if you can't afford it and no need to complain, and yes that price is fair for that phone for what you get. That's what you will have to pay to get this very premium phone, if you don't have the money go buy an another phone, don't complain, it's for people who have the money for it.

Both Apple and Samsung made more money out of a iPhone 4/Galaxy S3 then iPhone XS/Galaxy S10. The phones have more tech which is more expensive too. You could pay less for last years model and be as happy as you were a couple of years ago

Let me ask you something. Smartphones first off, are not phones. They are pocket sized mobile computers, that have the ability to make calls. Laptops cost more than desktops, because making things smaller to make them more portablr; costs more money. So since laptops tend to cost 40% or more vs a desktop with similar specs, then think of the cost to make it even smaller than that. Please find me a desktops or laptop that is brand new that offers all the same features as a Galaxy Note 9 for $1000. I want to see it. The latest S10+ and Note 9 are worth $1000. I would also say the iPhone XS Max, is worth $1000 on some level, even though it can't do what the Note does. But, since all of these are gonna be sold in the millions, they could sell them for less and make even more. But they rather have less sales and make more off each sell. Because saving money, makes you money.

What was your question now again? I just told the dude above that a SMARTphone today with the price tag of a $1000 dollars has more advanced parts in it then the flagship-SMARTphone had back in 2011 and are therefor more expensive to make. And the thing is it wouldn’t sell more for less. Because people still hold on to their galaxy S5-S7 or iPhone 5S-7 which cost like $649-$699 and there was options for them to upgrade with a similar price but they didn’t. I don’t know how many high end-smartphones Samsung sell a year but for apple we know that it is around 200 million units. So they’ve calculated that a XS/Max needs that price tag to adjust numbers going upwards while working out the service-revenue for future. I do think apple will sell products cheaper when we all hit a max and keep our phones for 4 years+ and apple solved their income in services. Btw I’m from Sweden so English isn’t my 1st language. Apologies in advance.

I feel like this price is completely reasonable. Heck, the base model is only 100 dollars more than the Iphone XS Max and for that your getting 3x the storage. Much faster storage and LTE speeds with 5g. So this phone might even be a bargain for some people at a 1,200 dollar starting price.

Why is storage a price differentiator ? Bacause Apple said so ? It probably costs Samsung around $25 to go from 128 to 512GB. Yet fooled customers pay like $500 or so.

If you actually Google what OEM's pay for storage, you will see all storage capacities cost them exactly the same. They simply charge you more for it.

Too bad Samsung makes their own memory chips!

Yes they do. And it cost them money to do so. Since Samsung makes it own storage, they could simply make a phone with a single storage option. For $1000, the phone should come with 512GB of storage. And that's the only model they need.

You are comparing bad with worse. Anything will look "cheap" next to an iPhone. Does it make any of them including the iPhone fair priced? Hell no. You are comparing the S10 to an overpriced phone. Both are way too expensive but as long as people are willing to buy it the situation won't get better.

"$1,200 or even $1,300 sounds fair to us" - see what Apple did to reviewers minds ? :)

Go back to doing your research Apple didn’t start this trend It was started with windows PCs The amount of Hard drive space has always been the main thing making different PCs cost more or less for basically the same model but with different hard drive sizes

Actually, processor and ram play at least as much of a role in PC prices as hard drive size, if not more. If you're talking the difference between a hard drive and a solid state drive (SSD), now that is a different story.

Prices above $800 is bad. Prices above $1000 is garbage. This goes for all OEM’s. More importantly, I understand when prople say they are future proofing their phones but are you really? - 5G wont be here properly atleast until S11 is out. By this time 5G flagship prices should come down heavily. - What makes everyone so sure that the 5G bands supported on S10 will be the same in 2 years. I mean it will still work but New bands might be added making this phone not desirable in only 2 years. - If you are anyways going to buy the latest and greatest always(I mean, if I think $1200 is okay, I would), it still makes sense to wait for the Note series. Apple somehow convinced its customers that paying $1000 is okay. I just pray that everyone else do not follow this nonsense. US desperately needs Xiaomi to enter and teach everyone a lesson.

Apple also sells 400$ phones; they didn't force anyone to buy 1k$ phones, their buyers CHOSE to buy them.

Okay. I think you misunderstood my comment on Apple. I did not say Apple forced something on their consumers or Samsung is forcing something. My point is all flagships have gone up from $650 to $900 in the past few years. Midrange has gone up from $250 to $450. You can argue that OLED is more expensive than LCD. In screen fingerprint scanner is more expensive and the list continues. But this was always the case and manufacturers used to make a little less profit in year 1 and more in year 3 as these components get cheaper. The biggest culprit in this game is trying to increase year on year returns. I use an iP7 that I purchased for $300. So why am I passionate about these increasing prices - because I love tech and tech should be more affordable. Everyone who loves Apple and Samsung deserves to get flagship phones at reasonable prices because we are the fans that made the companies what they are today.
