Samsung beats out Apple in terms of units shipped during the latest quarter

According to the Wall Street Journal, Samsung unofficially shipped 20 million units in the third quarter which beat out the 17.1 million copies of the Apple iPhone shipped during the same time; in the June quarter, Apple topped Nokia to become the leader in global smartphone shipments, a title it seems to have lost...

Q1 2012? you are so on taco. I'll let you choose your fate. by Q1 2012, the i4s initial bounce will be over and it will be on its slow downard trend until the i5 gets launched... especially since i5 rumors will start heating up again after christmas. Samsung will have the SGS2 on every carrier, the Galaxy Nexus on every carrier, and the Note will be out shore to shore. The galaxy HD should be out (nexus with touchwiz). They will also be building up rumors from the Galaxy3. Choose your fate taco.

Great achievement for Samsung. 20 million smartphones is a huge quarter. I expect Apple takes back the lead this quarter with their new line up.

Apple has adopted a long term strategy, they are wiser from their experience from the WINTEL experience. When Jobs took over Apple during his 2nd tour, Apple had about a 1% market share in PCs. Look at Apple now with something like 10.7% share in Q2 for 2011. I believe Apple has something like 230 carriers in 105 countries. China will be a HUGE market for Apple.

Apple is #2 smartphone vendor not manufacture, Samsung is #1 in both world vendor and manufacture.

Shipping =/= selling I'm afraid. Samsung can ship as many phones as they want, but what really matters is how many they "sell" to customers. And so far, the record breaking sales of the 4S have said otherwise.

they dont ship more unless they sell whats already been shipped so yes it is accurate

Not entirely accurate in this case.

They always have more shipped than sold... it's common sense. There are always gonna be models on store shelves or back-rooms waiting to be bought. Those were shipped, but not yet sold. Ya dig?

I am Android user...but to be makes little sense to compare samsung mobile sales to Apple iPhone sales...instead...just compare...Galaxy S sales with iPhone4 and Galaxy SII with iPhone4s...then we say samsung managed to beat apple on their own turf...just my opinion

Well, actually what they are looking at is what manufacture shipped the most smartphones, not which manufacture has the best selling model. If that were the case it would be the iPhone for sure, but the question is who shipped more smartphones, period.

What android fanboys don't realize, or refuse to realize, is that, in the last quarter, there was no ip4s yet. Apple was pretty much competing with newer Samsung devices in the most part of 2011 with last year's ip4. If you include ip4s initial sales of over 4million, that would beat Samsung. Now watch what happens in the 4th qtr reports. Apple will regain the crown once more.

what iphone people fail to realize is that the GalaxyS2 was not launched in its biggest market, aka America, until Q4. Samsung beat Apple without its flagship product in its prime market.

You iZombies kill me. Just admit, Apple LOST this round. They may, MAY take next quarter but Apple has two BEASTS to contend with in the SGS2 and Galaxy Nexus against that silly iPhone 4 refresh. So its going to be an interesting fourth quarter. I'm willing to place my money on Samsung for the win.

@digital. We are not denying the fact if ever Samsung did outsell the iphone in the last quarter. Just saying, that there was no new iphone, like there usually is, in summer, which slowed down iphone sales in anticipation of the ip4s. And I'm sorry, but the ip4s already sold over 4million units in a matter of 3-4 days. That's a huge feat to follow, so I would keep it low on the bragging rights if I were you. Oh well, android fanboys have been shameless in making wrong predictions anyways :) What did you android fanboys say again about the ip4s? You guys said it would flop right? Hahahahahahahaha.

Nah, I remember alot of Fandroids called it a disappointment. Wait..... Alot of iPhans also called it a disappointment... Well, I guess if it's something you love, you'd still support it even if it was a disappointment. Like a underachieving child. He maybe a disappointment but you still love and invest in him. =)

@l3610. Well obviously, the number of iphone users that were disappointed with the ip4s are outnumbered with the number of consumers who think that the ip4s is a worthy upgrade. And also, some iphone users were disappointed that there expected features were not on the ip4s, but it does not necessarily mean that they're disappointed with the ip4s overall. Stop thinking too much, and just look at the sales figures. It's didn't disappoint at all :)

To be fair, there were tons of people who were waiting on a new iPhone. Apple could have pushed out a worse phone and the sales still would have been amazing. I've said in other comments that I've had customers wait a year for it. I still have customers buying the 4s and they don't know anything about the phone. I also have customers on a daily basis pick up an android phone and ask if it's the iPhone. What I'm saying is the phone could suck bottom and customers are dumb enough to still get it. It's the name they want not the actual phone.

Samsung has been adjudicated by several courts around the world that they infringed on Apple's IP. Basically, Samsung is a copyist and if you want to buy phones from a copyist, then go right ahead. Samsung's brand value took a HUGE it and they know it!

Yeah, imagine what they would ship if APPLE would stop this non-sense? 50 million....60 million.....?? No wonder APPLE is worried.

@digital. You made it sound like Apple lost money. Never heard of that 22billion loss in related stock. As far as I know, Apple made a hefty profit in the last quarter. 4 million ip4s sold will give Apple huge profits again. And it all goes to Apple, unlike android share that is divided by several OEM's. All you can brag about is market share, because android has multiple OEM's vs iOS that only has Apple. Only android fanboys will say that iOS5 isn't great. That's no surprise. But of you read professional reviews, iOS5 is way advanced than the competition. And how is Apple behind in hardware and software? Do you see any quadcore phones out there. The iphone's retina display still has the highest display resolution out there in th market. IOS is still the most refined and polished OS in the market. So how can iOS be behind? Siri is the most advanced voice recognition assistant. Android is nothing but a cheap alternative for those who cannot afford the iphone. Android is just an iOS rip off. Without iOS, there would be no android :)

Actually without Android there would be no IOS... Android is the first to put out/test software and hardware. Apple then takes what everyone else has done and makes it a little better. If it wasn't for other companies paving the way, apple would have to test everything out themselves and would be putting out a lesser product. Also the display is nice because it's on such a small screen. knock it up to 4.3 an then really test out the screen. Or, test out super amoled on a 3.5 and see how it compares. I give credit where it's due but I will love android. My inced2 is more fun than the 4. Yeah I've had a few problems but it's all about preference.

Hey taco and who came before iPhone ? Get your info right lol

60. Scuba_Steve

Taco yes I know. The point I was making was android is not afraid to add new features and truly be creative. While the iPhone is a massive reason why we have smartphones today, you do not see apple being brave or bold, they're being safe. They make a great product yes but for the most part, it's a boring one. So, the 200 new features iOS5 has, Android has had for a while now. They piggy back off of others and make a more mature version. So without Android you'd have a lesser product. That is what I mean by "Without android there would be no IOS"
