Samsung Develops the World's First Amorphous Silicon ''a-Si'' 2.6-inch VGA LCD Display

Samsung Electronics announced the first 640 x 480 LCD display which measures only 2.6 in (6.5 cm). Samsung's latest LCD is a a-SI (Amorphous Silicon) transflective model with 300 dpi, which provides sharp images even when exposed to bright summer sunshine. A-Si is used to fabricate the thin-film transistors used to switch the screen pixels on and off. Mass production on existing lines is scheduled to begin in December of this year. Initially, the new display will be aimed at PDA, and then expanded to smartphones and mobile phones equipped for digital multimedia broadcasting.
