Report: Sony might exit its smartphone business if 2016 doesn't produce a profit

According to a new report, Sony Chief Executive Kazuo Hirai is giving the company's Xperia smartphone line one more year to prove itself. If the division doesn't break even, or post a profit in 2016, the executive has hinted that there are "alternative options" for Sony including exiting the business altogether. The red ink that Sony's mobile division is expected to spill this year has risen from $310 million back in April, to a more current forecast of $480 million...

This can be a good acquisition by Apple with Sony's rich patent portfolio.

I hope not.

An Apple Z5 with iOS 10 would sell like hot cakes( and also cost the price of hot cakes), but then again, why would Apple spend the money when they can just rape sheep like you. If anything, they should buy BLU or some shady China brand and make them make an iPhone 6c with a Qualcomm SD400 and a less than 720p display for $599 us to rip you off some more. Apple buying Sony Mobile....rofl..good one.

Unlikely as an acquisition. They're spinning off the profitable portions (like their imaging sensors).

Sony could have the best camera on their flagship but still got beaten by apple lg samsung whose packed with Sony made sensors....have to do better than that if they still want to stay in the smartphone market

I love Sony handsets, but they are just not the best (own experience with the Z line). Especially the midrange ones like for example the M4 Aqua (just looked at it for a couple of minutes). And they still sell it for too much. This is the problem: you have to pay only for the Sony branding. And yes, Apple does exactly the same, but that works for them. For Sony? Not so good. And for HTC? Absolutely not. The only luck for Sony is that they are not only in the mobile business and because of that they don't get bankrupted if they fall out.

If they would stop waiting 30 years to release the Z5 variants of the Z4v here in the States, they would make a little money.

I guess it's goodbye Sony. In 2016 no one is going to buy a phone that looks like it was made in 2011.

sony exits PC business before. now they are in danger of exiting smartphones. so what is next? but seriously, if they don't price their phones as if they are Apple, they might get some profit. if only they make a phone that is comfortable to hold, not a phone with a very flat back & very huge bezel...

As someone said they should concentrate on high-end flagships. I don't know about other parts of the world, but their Z5 (with 32GB internal storage and SD card expansion mind) costs US$100 less than Apple's 16GB iPhone 6S here in Hong Kong.

Correction: It's around the same price. Still not a bad deal IMHO.

Not this crap again PA? They already confirmed they'd never exit the mobile market 3 months ago.

Too bad, I really like their phones their issue not only stems from not having a strong carrier partner it's also the fact that they release a flagship every 6 months or so, when all other OEMs do it every year. Perhaps the Z4v was cancelled by Verizon for this very reason, they probably figured who would want to buy this phone when the media is talking about the Z5 already which was just released.

If Sony end up exiting the smartphone market, it's simply because they can't compete against companies like Apple or Samsung. This is the free market at play.

I also can't understand why they market this Z4, when the C5 ultra is a newer better phone

The kind of stupid product line-up and release strategy that Sony had recently, they should have exited the smartphone business in 2015 already. and believe me, I am not trolling

That is sad...but sony did it to themselves...they need to make flagship device at reasonable price...cut costs by using stock android.

Even if Sony enter the US market it is not a guarantee they will succeed. Sony products are just too expensive. Sony want big profit and has a mindset that people will buy whatever products they put on the market. Look at thei tv and computer division. Sony never learn. One day , Sony will end up just producing spare parts and PlayStation only if they don't change their ways.

one of major problems of sony I think is the price , while other phones offer more and cost less , sony offers expensive phones with no support or offers from carriers , plus there is no major drop in prices of the old ones , so you can buy latest offerings from samsung and lg for example for less price than the old sony offerings . so even if they made really good phones they must compete with apple customers not android world . as example in every generation was the some sort of issue that keeps it back , latest for example is the snapdragon 810 which has overheating problem and still used in z5 , in a price of an Iphone, I don't think that the z5 will be a success , in the mean time you can get the same specs in other phones or even better with less price and no issues .plus in the android world it is very hard to compete you must not only offers something new every singel year, but also make no mistakes . so sony mobile lineup needs to be changed from ground up I think because it is not meant for everybody , that is why I think samsung is by far is the most successful company every year it offers something new , no major mistakes or issues , prices drops every year at constant rate so even if you didn't buy latest model you will get the one before it for much cheaper price .

for all those bring up htc its there own fault for losing money. implementing bad camera senors on there flagships and making lots of identical phones to there flagships with little to no change. i love them as a company but they need to try harder. They have good traits but many more bad and Sony needs to fix there software there phones are amazing but there soft ware is bland well to me i dont want to see them go out but they need a new design. And for people saying android makes no money it dose just not as much cause apple charges you a leg and a arm for there software. with outdated tech. but they have a amazing business model company wise

I'd buy a high-end Sony smartphone if it was powered by Windows 10 Mobile.

I think the problem is their design. I truly find their design to be beautiful, I don't want it to be changed, but for mass appeal it must. When I had the Z3v, everyone thought it was an iPhone 4(s). Z3v (and Sony's attempt for North American appeal) was ruined by Verizon. The Verizon at the top drew more attention than the Sony one at the bottom, I had some people think it was a phone made by Verizon. Going off what other people have said, they should really cut off their low end/mid range, or at least decrease the price. Also, marketing.
