Report: Sony might exit its smartphone business if 2016 doesn't produce a profit

According to a new report, Sony Chief Executive Kazuo Hirai is giving the company's Xperia smartphone line one more year to prove itself. If the division doesn't break even, or post a profit in 2016, the executive has hinted that there are "alternative options" for Sony including exiting the business altogether. The red ink that Sony's mobile division is expected to spill this year has risen from $310 million back in April, to a more current forecast of $480 million...

What stinks is that Sony improved their entry level and midrange portfolios considerably this year to counter the Chinese. A puny $250 M4 Aqua is as powerful as $500 Galaxy A8. The SD810 debacle is also probably to blame.

I'm sure 2016 will be a much better year for all SD chip OEMs. I have a hard time recommending phones this year when pretty much nothing has a good battery life.

I am not sure where did you get your prices from, but the Aqua costs $260 and the A8 $390 here in Lebanon. And there is no way that it is as powerful as the A8. 5.5" 1080 vs 5" 720 16mp 1.9f camera vs 13mp 32GB vs 8GB GG4 vs scratch resistant glass Fingerprint scanner vs none 3050mah vs 2400 mah

Samsung hater has the blinders on, it is clear as day that Sansung always has, and probably always use the best parts available. They themselves are spec w***es. Although this news about the Exynos 7422 in GS7's in India is a bit concerning. If they stop going balls to the walls in specs, there would be no one left.

This is sad news.... Sony makes great phones, but they never got traction in the market. Most consumers are either buying the new Apple or Samsung just because of the name. I will def get the Z5 Premium in memory of Sony Mobile.

It's not just because of the name, it is this kind of thinking that got HTC in trouble.

I've been saying this was going to happen for a few years now. Poor Sony.

Poor Sony indeed. They make exquisite hardware, but then dont market it or provide it with the software necessary for use in the highest paying markets. Im typing this on a Xperia Tablet Z4 LTE which is simply superb. But I had to get a international model and in spite of Sony's published specs, it doesnt have the bands for US LTE. They cant beat the Chinese manufacturers in Asia, and wont provide most of their products in the USA which is the biggest, richest market in the world, and the one where there is still memory of them as a premium brand.

I honestly think Sony need to rebrand their mobile devices. The current Z series is boring and plain and the design has barely changed at all, they need something more eye catching and exciting to stick out from the competition.

This Sony peeps dont know how to build hype around their products like they used to.. Apple and Samsung are masters at that, and lets face it, its as important as what you sell in the market. I cant even remember the last time I saw a Sony advertisement on TV. (,--)

Sony makes the best ads imo, I fell for their ads more than any other company.

GREAT! Sony has really made no attepmt to make a really great Android device. The Xperia which I have NEVER seen at any US Carrier, just isn't appealing. The last one looks really cool, but boring at the same time. I would guess all of them should all quit making phones as the Chine brands are selling more phones than Taiwan(HTC), Japan (Sony) and even Korea (LG). Samsung is simply the king of Asia overall with China cheaptastic phones trying to take their low-end segment. Samsung and LG are the only OEM's who make money with Android. They make the best phones, though I don't like LG phones and they are the ones actually making devices worth buying.

Yeah, great news! No more phones with IP68, good battery life, a nice UI instead of that ugly touchwiz etc. etc. Why would you want that as an option?!? Who is crazy enough to buy that when you can also buy a featureless phone with a small battery, no waterproofing, no micro SD (seriously, why does anybody want micro SD? Samsung told us that it's useless, so it is), no FM-radio (why would you want that too? Again, Samsung told us with the GS4 that that's outdated, so it is). Maybe I will buy three of the next Galaxy's if they can remove even more features!! Love you Samsung!!

As a fellow windows phone user, I still have an xperia z2 tablet and yes highly agree, although I have to say, I liked better Timescape from the xperia x10a from back in the day, that UI was completely amazing!

This is kind of true. Except for the car industry, video game, and camera industry, Japan has lost a lot of the huge edge they used to have. Even in those industries though Mercedes is taking over the mid range cars from Toyota and Honda and Samsung will eventually take over the cameras if the NX1 keeps evolving. Microsoft already took nearly half of the video games industry by bleeding Xbox money until they eventually profited. So their dominance is closing in for sure. It was a fantastic run though. Japan was number 1 in all electronics and technology for how long? 30 years? Seiko and Citizen still has the watch market down cold but if smart watches take over, they are screwed too.
