Radio Shack to start taking pre-orders for the AT&T HTC One X on Sunday for $149

Radio Shack is taking pre-orders for the HTC One X starting on Sunday at a price of $149.99 with a signed two-year pact; those pre-ordering from Radio Shack will receive free downloads of seven songs from Coldplay...

Target Mobile is offering the same deal minus the Coldplay songs. Factor in the 5% REDcard discount and this phone is a steal at $142.49. And they will even trade in your old phone for a gift card on the new one. Someone coming from an iPhone 3GS or newer could get this phone for $50 to free on upgrade with the pre-order discount.

Target Mobile is a part of radioshack. So if you buy a phone from target its like buying from a radioshack kiosk. You can trade in your phone at radioshack aswell.

Although it is true that Target Mobile is a owned subsidiary of Radioshack, that does not mean that they are the same company. Target Mobile has its own mission, its own senior management, and its own direction that it would like to head as a company. This is like comparing a Volkswagen to a Bentley. Would you tell someone that bought a Bentley, "Nice VW!" or vice versa? Highly doubtful. The cash backing each operation may come from the same place, but each individual business operates differently to stay competitive in its respective market.

Although it is also true that Radioshack also trades in phones, do they trade in video games, box sets of DVD's and blue-rays, digital cameras, tablets, e-readers, graphing calculators, iPods, and select game consoles like the Nintendo DS? Do they offer you a gift card of up to $500 for such items? Do they offer you 5% off of your purchase just by using a debit card with the Target logo on it that pulls from your very own checking account? Do they accept coupons provided to you by a local pharmacy?

I apologize for the length of this post and please, know that I am not intending to elevate one brand over another. After all, it is ultimately the consumer's choice where to get a phone. I was simply providing a reply with another great deal, thus keeping a customer's options open and keeping the market competitive and the public informed.

Do each happen to be from the same parent corporation? Absolutely! Then again, that is why Target and Radioshack will be the two cheapest places in town to buy the One-X if you pre-order it. Bring your old electronics in to Target and you may even get the One-X for free and have some money left on the gift card to buy needed items. Now that is a deal.

I seems like a nice piece of hardware. My question is...(and this is not rhetorical) why is the phone being so heavily discounted before it's even out of the gate?

I'm not exactly sure...but I would speculate that HTC realizes that the Galaxy S3 is around the corner. Since they are losing a lot of market share and not selling as many phones as Samsung, they probably think that discounting their flagship phone will bring more people to buy this instead of the Galaxy S3. Biggest reason is because Radioshack has a very good relationship with HTC and they have worked in the past on various HTC exclusives within their various companies. The last one to date that I can recall was a color scheme of the HTC Rhyme in the plum color. Granted you could it at a VZW store, but you were also paying 199 for it when RS had it a 149. Very similar to this situation.

the intense training that was given to a select few people from each of their stores in a particular district, sit in an a training room listen to the local area rep, "talk" about the phones features, what it can do, etc. etc on the only one live model that he has, that is his own personal demo model passed around for about 20 min's ~ the only other training is an online certification everyone takes that basically guides everyone thru the phones basic features. Between now and May 6th no one is really gonna remember much of what they learned unless they are tech savy and are into phones and those reps are few and far in between. dont be surprised come may 6th and a large % of these reps dont know what they are doing/saying.

That is why the courses are always available for reference and review. A good management team would watch for mis-statements and then encourage their team to review the information so as to not misinform the customer. Also, how is this different from corporate store training?

Exactly a good management team would do that, but the problem is that theres a big mis-management of management coming down from the corporate level. When you have the higher ups saying you need to sell 10 phones by 1pm on launch day ~ any store not reaching that goal will have to be on a conference call to explain WHY your store didnt sell 10 phones by that time. Then during that call tell you that you need to hit 15 phones by 5pm and if you havent there will be another conference call at 530pm to explain why then tell you that you need to hit that before closing if not you have to stay open until you hit that mark.

Of course no manager/asst mgr or sales associate team want to stay past closing especially if they opened early that day saying 8am (which was such the case when the iphone hit for sprint and in one particular location had only sold 1 phone by 1pm) SO when that happens all that training is out the door and are told to sell the phone by any means and move on to the next as quickly as possible in order to meet the corporates goals.

I cannot comment on that particular instance, which seems quite harsh, but also unlikely in most other locations or areas. It seems overly pessimistic and rather naive to apply such a negative one size fits all approach to the management team of such a large organization, but take my opinion for what it is. We still haven't answered what special additional training you feel other locations get.

I wouldnt say any location of Radioshack gets specialized training. Unlike the AT&T stores gets live demo models of the phones for their associates to train on and to use to demo features to customers. Radioshack gets demos sometimes, the last one being the iPhone4s for AT&T when it 1st launched to promote the phone. The rest of the phones they do have in the store are dummy models with index cards describing the features.

I figured live demos were going to be the topic and that is definitely an understandable advantage for someone who has to touch and feel their next purchase. Some don't have to. In my experience, recently each device has gotten so similar that if you have used any one of the major phone OS' at all, you should know how it runs across different manufacturers. Once you have sold the handset, you usually turn it on for the guest and walk them through the setup process and answer any questions they have about their new device. Do this a few times and you will get to know the devices pretty well. Even with Android ICS, the menu setup hasn't changed too drastically, WP7 is the same across all phones, and iOS is well. . . iOS. The worst anyone has to deal with are custom HTC sense widgets, manufacturer and carrier added apps and games, or whether or not the menu scrolls vertically or horizontally on the model in question.

Secondary Contract? I want some of what youre smoking. They are a Authorized Retailer just like a Best Buy or Costco. You think by paying a highly inflated cost and most likely having a mail-in rebate to process you're getting a better device? The guys at the corp store must have the biggest grin on their faces when they see you walk through they door.
