PhoneArena Awards 2013: Best Smartphones

This is it, guys! It is time for the culmination in our PhoneArena Awards of 2013. We're pleased to announce the final and most exciting category in our series, and as you can probably tell already, today we'll be announcing the year's best smartphones. Before we get to it, we have to admit that picking today's winners was a pretty difficult task. That's because we got to play with a ton of smartphones over the past 12 months and we did like many of them. Only a few of this year's smartphones, however, truly stood out...

No, to me the supreme being is God. Supreme means the most high, and being means to exist. _____ is God.

Didn't you say you were sick of seeing the iPad always winning the PA best tablet award? LOL We're not haters (well most of us anyway) we are just sick of seeing it too :P

I don't think it is bias like a lot of people do. I think it is fairly earned.

Why not iPhone 5s ? first 64bit processor and finger print sensor ! At least the 64 bit processor is somethings new in the smartphone world ! Now all we need is samsung to copy it and make it better for android.

I lost all respect for PhoneArena! No Galaxy S4 or Note 3? This list is just blasphemous!

The G2? It has an absolute mess for an OEM skin, coupled with very gimmicky software. It has little to no business being at the top end of a smartphone list. There's at least 5 devices that should be ahead of it, not even including the other two on this list. Very surprised at this choice.

I have to say something here. I once used to enjoy reading the articles on PA, but it seems like the quality of your selections have gone down more and more every time I read something. You state within the article about the iPhone that "Visually, it wasn't very different from its predecessor, and its specs didn't seem as droolworthy as those of Android flagships, but nevertheless, Apple's smartphone did sell by the truckloads." Just because some product sells by the truck loads it doesn't mean it is one of the top phones of 2013. Lets be honest here, it wasn't very different from it predecessor and it didn't have the specs to compete with Android flagships just as you mentioned, so there is no need to think about putting it up next to these devices as one of the top phones of the year. Sure if you want to make a category for top selling phones of 2013 then go for it and throw the iPhone in there, but it doesn't deserve the praise you are giving it by allowing it in this category. Now the Galaxy S4 should have clearly made this list as it had all kinds of new technology to offer within a mobile phone that wasn't offered in any other phone on the market. They are actually trying to be innovative by trying new things. The phone has all kinds of new tricks that they pulled off with it's new sensors and it doesn't even get mentioned. It even has a screen that doesn't even require special cloves to use it's capacitive screen. It's just sad to see that a Tech site such as PA can be so quick to forget about a phone that is pushing the limits when it comes to being innovative and forcing other companies to be more creative, which is what inspires other companies to release products like the LG G2. Anyhow, poor decisions like this just force readers to go to other sites, which will soon decrease your audience. Wish you all the best in your future decisions when deciding on such things as Best Smartphones. I hope you all will chose more wisely.

My personal award for the best mobile phone, I really mean PERSONAL AND SUBJECTIVE. 1st. Sony Xperia Z1: Great design, powerful hardware, great screen (in some units though), the best camera in android and apple environment, waterproof, MICROSD CARD SLOT. LG G2 is really really great though but it has no micro sd card slot which is a huge deal breaker for me Samsung Galaxy S4 is pretty well rounded but the design is outdated. But the bad design doesn't bother me as much as the lack of micro sd card slot. HTC One has great design, decent hardware, probably the greatest screen in the market, and the best audio quality on a smartphone. But it has the biggest letdown in the history of smartphone technology development, the 4MP "ultrapixel" camera.. And a lack of sd card slot Btw iphone 5s doesn't deserve to be in the top spot for the best smartphone of 2013 because... Well... It is pretty much the same old sh*t since 2010, except for the camera and processor of course

FYI the Galaxy S4 does in deed have an SD card slot.

The LG G2 is too new to the market and dosen't bring anything substantialy new. Keys on the back... WOW! Nexus 5 is an inferior phone other than updates, which play catch up with Touch wiz and LG features like toggles on the top. Iphone 5s which is actually an upgraded Iphone 4: Bigger screen, fingerprint, newer software, sharper camera all qualify for an update. Not a totally new phone. New is swiwel camera, ask Oppo. And IOS 7 is again playing catch up with Android and Samsung. Disagree completly with PA on that one. My take: The GS4 should be first. It outsells any other Android, it has SD card, swappable battery, Mutli window, quick glance the lot. S.Amoled and a great camera are obvious. Design? Nothing special but nothing ugly either. Second Xperia Z1 Gourgeous design but also water tight. Great camera, easy to use and fast UI. Sd card support. Balanced and thrustworty. Third Lumia 1020. Build quality, unmatched 41 MP camera, WP is refreshing, fluid and completly different. And the WP Marketplace constantly expands.

Really the iPhone 5S over the HTC One?

LG G2 - practically a mixture of pure engineering genius and "do all Korean OEMs have the same software programmers" type of crap. Does it deserve the first place? No. Why you ask? Because the software lacks. Big time. It's design doesn't match today's standards (iOS, "pure" KitKat, WP) and some parts of the OS are not even translated from Korean... What should have taken the first place? Something that was given attention to detail. Either a flagship from Nokia or the HTC One (see how I exluded the iPhone, hehehe). P.S.: not hating LG, I'm actually typing this from an LG phone.

I think PA should just put a "slot zero" in every contest or best of and populate it with "Latest iPhone". It would be kind of like setting a place for Grandpa at the table, even though he's dead. Pretty much for the same reason too. Or maybe one of those little white crosses on the side of the road. "This is where the iPhone swerved off of the information superhighway and tore up someone's corn field".

I can't figure out if I enjoy the content of this website more or the tears of teenagers when the iPhone is mentioned in a positive light.
