0. phoneArena posted on 05 Dec 2012, 12:57

Ladies and gents, welcome back to the PhoneArena Awards of 2012! Today, we'll be talking about pricing - unjustified pricing, to be more specific, as the next category in our series is for the year's most overpriced product...

Did you read the headline properly? Or didn't you?
Incase you missed it...concentrate on just the last word of the headline..."Product", that's right. Verizon, Sprint, AT&T are not products, they're carriers.

Dude... Business & Economics 101. A service is a product. They're not tangible (can't hold 'em in your hand) but they are products nonetheless.

Well, sorry to disappoint you but this ain't "Business & Economics 101" this here is "PA's Overpriced product 101".
I'm sure you're not wrong, but you can't apply that here.

Yeah... I think the iPad mini should have been the clear winner. It's 400 bucks for a smaller table, no Retina display, and an outdated chip! Not saying its a bad device, I think it looks really good. BUT, 400 bucks??? HELL to the NO!!!

Where the hell are you guys getting your prices on the bright side? They've been free up until they changed their plans to the share everything. Clueless :/

The most overpriced item is basically any smartphone off contract. When smartphones retail for $700 and up, you are basically forced in to the phone company's game of subsidized phones, inflated monthly bills, and two-year contracts.

Except with Tmobile... Or you know any pre-paid carrier.

I don't see what's wrong with this comment. Short of the Nexus 4, unlocked phones are insanely overpriced. Granted, should one buy a phone and get a prepaid plan, that person would save money in the long term.
However, there is absolutely no reason why an iPhone should cost $650 unlocked, while an LTE iPad costs $630 unlocked. The iPad is much more expensive to manufacture. Same goes for most any unlocked phone.

It only seem overpriced because you (and millions of others) are really bad at math. Add up the cost of your average on-contract smartphone times 24 months of service and compare it to the same phone purchased at full price with 24 months of pre-paid service, such as Straight Talk.

ipad should be #1 the surface is so new it shouldn't be on the list and why would the Samsung Brightside even be in the a line up with the likes of the ipad and surface wow!

Nailed it, agree with this assessment. Would the Surface been second without the Touch Cover?

Most definitely. If Apple's 32GB/64GB products are on the list, you bet the Surface would be there too, since it carries the same price premiums per storage bump. Moreover, Microsoft's margin on the Surface is absurdly even higher than Apple's margin on the iPad.

When award is for Overpriced then it should be on Off Contract Pirces to eliminate any extraneous factors. The basis if award itself is wrong. Honestly it should be on basis of computed difference between manufacturing cost and average selling price.

Even I don´t disagree with the list much, I think it´s missing one of the worst "try to rip off your customers" of the year: the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini.
Original price in Europe: 400€, that was paying 130€ more than the Samsung Galaxy S Advance for 256MB of ram and and new chasis... It was even more expensive than the S2, which has better specs in every aspect!
No wonder not even a month after price was down to a more earthly 300€

I wish I could read a PA article without seeing people bitching in the comments about Apple products.

One can dream...

I've found pretty much any other websites comment sections to be better. I'm really just about to stop reading this website altogether. It's not PA's fault, but people on here are the worst.

trolls apparently didnt read the article. The reason the 16GB iphones are considered to be at a good price is because they are competitive with similar phones that have similar capacities (at contract price, not no contract price), but if you want more you really have to pay a lot more, since you can pay about $20 for a 16GB card and $40 for a 32GB.

nope, the iphone 5 at 199.99 is overpriced - some places have it at 179.99. I can get a better android phone for half of that or about 99.99.

As was mentioned... I would EDIT for the last piece to include all Apple products. And how is the Surface overpriced when it gets you double the storage as the iPad, a way stronger processor, Microsoft Office, larger screen... Need I go on?

I mean just comparing prices for the same memory models, the iPad is more expensive... Last time I checked this was an overpriced competition.

Guess, PA has got to show their hate for MSFT one way or another. Good for you guys, you'll grow up soon enough, make enough money, and start buying quality products like the Surface RT. (It's probably on the list just cause you guys wanted one, but it didn't fetch a sorry azz marked down and slashed prices of the millions of premature android tablets.

I fail to see how the galaxy note 2 didn't make it onto the list - $300 on a 2 year contract, 16GB internal memory, outdated display compared to its competition in the same category

totally agree with this!!

lol to that samsung phone!! very plastic but why too pricey?! haha

if microsoft just sold surface RT tablet at $399 or $449 with ouch cover, it will give justice! due to the fact that its low res screen and apps are not that crowded!

all apple products are overprice so no shock is needed! but yeah..at least it has premium looking materials! that will give justice to its price...but still again....too overprice!

Yup. Unsubsidized prices should be considered here. Off-contract prices. That really defines 'overpriced'.

This list is totally wrong. Should be based on device price and ipad Mini is the most overpriced as hell Nr 1 product of all!
- Bad spec
- Not Retina.
- Dual Core
- 1024 x 768

Price: WiFi 16GB - 329 US
16GB WiFi + Cellular - 459 US
I dont even bother taking up 32GB/64GB.

If this isnt most overpriced product and I dont know how PA see in things.
