Panasonic to focus on 3G handsets

Panasonic's brand-maker Matsushita announced its plans to stop the production of GSM mobile phones and turn their attention to the development of 3G devices. The decision is provoked by the difficulty the company is facing in the competing global GSM market and at the same time the existing interest in handsets with more advanced features, especially on the domestic market. The company also hopes to cut costs by unifying its platforms and core technologies for both Japan and overseas. Besides the number of plants, which will be closed down all around the world, a software development facility in the US will be closed as well, as Matsushita plans to switch to Linux-based OS for all of their handsets.
