Panasonic outs stylish DMC-CM1: 20 MP phone with whopping 1" camera sensor, and flagship specs

With 4.7" 1080p display, Snapdragon 801 CPU, and a huge 1" sensor for its 20 MP camera, Panasonic is on an Android revival spree, and a stellar one at that, judging from the just-announced Lumix DMC-CM1 camera-centric handset. After reviving the Eluga brand, Panasonic is now placing phone functions in a compact camera, Galaxy K zoom-style, but seemingly does it way better than Samsung...

If these companies were giving the same quality of a DSLR with smartphone capabilities, I would understand that. But they're not. What's the point of spending over one grand on this thing if a cheaper $400 DSLR does it better. Just buy a real camera if photos are really centric to your interest.

'Cause lugging around a clunky DSLR is way too impractical in many situations.

This is why Project Ara sounds so amazing For your average day, put a good camera with a 1/2.3" sensor For when you go on holiday or to an event, put this camera with its 1" sensor DSLRs/Mirrorless or Sony's Q series aren't as convenient as this one

Nothing like competition for Sammy. In 2015, the Note 5 will be shipping with a larger image sensor. If this Lumix camera phone gets traction, Sammy won't take it without responding. Best of luck to Panasonic.

Lol, wishful thinking. They could put one in a Galaxy K Zoom. But so far that phone has been butt-ugly, like all Samsung's phones.

Thank you!!! i know about the Z3, but Sony is SLEEPING!!!!! everytime i pull out my sony tx-66 http://store.sony.com/touch-screen-digital-camera-zid27-DSCTX66/cat-27-catid-EOL-Cybershot-Compact-Cameras every1..... EVERYONE asks me to send them the amazing pic i took. every 1 thinks ita ALREADY a phone!! Sony needs a Sensor centric phone like this, with BETTER camera software to avoid all the famous "Sony Noise" their cameras have at full resolution. id buy that over the Z3......might even buy this!!!

reckless I think that I was the only one who had a TX66. The photos at 100% are noisily and overprocessed ! When I bought my RX100 I could finally breathe easily ! A new 1' era is commimg.

yea, noisy Deffinitly at night, even with flash, but ONLY at highest resolution. and in day time, BEAUTIFUL shots! but a TX-66 fits in the 3rd front pocket (the really small one on the right side of jeans, u usually dont have a use for ) of my jeans :-) its so damn portable, it really saves my ass when i need a trully quick camera. id love an RX-100 too, obviously, but, it would take up an actuall pocket, n id hate for it to be a back pocket n accidently sit on it. so yea, TX-66 camera that can fit in 3rd front pocket NEEDS a phone chip n radio n a battery upgrade, and run android obviously n ull have a dope ass phone

That's why mirrorless exists. Cameras like the Olympus Pen series and Panasonic GM1 in particular are extremely portable and easy to carry around and have (almost) dslr like image quality.

In that case, you're better off with a regular smartphone camera module. It'll give you passable results for far cheaper. If people are serious and want legit photo quality, they'll opt for a DSLR then.

Convergence. People were saying EXACTLY the same thing 5-10 years ago about phones and compact cameras. "Why would you pay for a measly 3MP camera in a phone! Just get a 5MP compact shooter!" or whatever. The camera you have with you is best.

A 1" sensor is damn good. That's better than most dedicated compact cameras. Only a select group of compact cameras have larger sensors (m 4/3 and APS-C), and that's really when you start getting into mirrorless system cameras. And Leica lenses are regarded as pretty much the best that money can buy, as long as they built one for this that at least somewhat lives up to its name. Bottom line, there's a possibility that this phone actually competes with some higher end compact cameras, which would be absolutely spectacular for a smartphone.

Now all eyes on you Sony! What about an Xperia RX-100? If Panasonic can do it, you also can.

Lol, as expected from a paid troll, completely forget about samsung and it's utterly failure "flagship" phone galaxy alpha. You're failing and i'm not just talking about your exam which you apparently ditch for note 4 announcement but also your job.

Actually, my exams got postponed for two days after. This pimp slaps the K Zoom as well. You seriously fail at trolling. Take some lessons from Arte.

Sony has their lens cameras which probably perform even better than this.

I'm expecting Sony to come up with better camera-smarphone than Panasonic in the next few months. Just wait. "Sony Xperia RX100" is a good name. ;) Specs I want to see: 5.2 - inch 1920 x 1080 resolution IPS-LCD Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 SoC 20MP BSI CMOS 1"- sensor 32gb internal with microSD card slot (expandable to 128gb) Dust/water resistant IP 65/68 S-Master MX audio chip 3800mAh battery $999.99

Dont expect sony to make better camera phones cuz they will not use leica lenses on phones. leica explains why the phone has to be expensive.

You seem to forget that Sony and Zeiss are in bed together.

Yes but only for cameras. Zeiss picks one company for a product, Nokia for phone cameras and Sony for regular cameras.

Tell that to the Zeiss Otus...Leica is the best, but Zeiss is right up there. This phone will get a great lens, but Leica can't produce their best stuff in a device this size. Now, using a 1" sensor in combination with that lens -- that really ups the ante.
