Nokia is halting all future Symbian & feature phone efforts in the US; moving to WP7

0. phoneArena posted on 09 Aug 2011, 14:21

There is absolutely no questioning it, but the US market has never been kind to any of Nokia’s offerings with Symbian and S40, and rightfully so, it doesn’t surprise us that they’re planning to move forward with Windows Phone 7...

I think it's a good strategy. Nokia wants to leave Symbian & MeeGo away in the U.S. so they can start fresh with Widows Phone 7. It makes sense, I just hope the Nokia Sea Ray is going to be a beast phone. Both Nokia & WP7 need to come out swinging VERY hard! A sub-par phone would hurt big time. Then need a sick phone to put them on the map. The Mango update will be awesome, but the phone needs to be equally awesome! I am hoping both Nokia & WP7 hit it out of the park!

Agreed (though i still want an N9 and hope newegg /amazon / someone will stock them much like mobilefun and expansys will in the UK).
However, ditching S40 doesn't make sense and these phones are not competing for the same customers that Symbian 3, Meego and Windows Phone would.

LOL, like they actually stood a chance with Symbian. No one even uses Symbian and it's a half baked effort compared to the superior iOS.

Only thing Nokia can do is sit back, sip on some tea, and watch themselves die a slow death because Symbian is a dead OS. It's basically Android's future in a few years.

who else thinks elop is kind of like a 'trojan horse' if you may, infiltrate the company, and bring it down :/
nokia USED to be my favorite company, but ever since using the N97, and then the N8, it has no hope. Agreed the camera is good on the N8, but i'm not buying a point-and-shoot, i'm buying a smartphone.
now, samsung is my favorite, but i hope nokia makes an android phone, i would buy that, no matter how much i love my current SGS2.

The Astound didn't spark much interest as it came after the Elop announcement and t-mobile reps advised customers against it (i experienced that personally due to the Windows Phone announcement) or didn't understand it (i also experienced this), but it certainly wasn't a bad device.

I'm not suprised about nokia cutting Symbian in the US, espeicially if they are not releasing the Meego N09 here either, and clearing the smartphone segment for their Windows Phone devices.
I am suprised about them ditching S40 in the US as well. lots of users don't want smartphones and want a good phone that calls people, does texts and has some other features but doesn't need a 3.5-4" touchscreen. Lots of users also want to avoid high data rates enforced by carriers when you buy smartphones, and many might not use the internet much on their phone. Some will be on major carries, others on virtual networks or pay as you go rates. I know the US is not the focus market for feature phones, but it does seem shortsighted to withdraw completely from this customer segment.

Now this is almost even as INSANE as Nokia not launching N9 in US.

Elop is trying to bring Nokia down !
Get rid of him now, Mr Eflop.

Is there anyone that think the same about Eflop ?

Agreed, Elop not only needs to be dumped. If only it is possible, he also definitely have to be sued for being a COSTLY TROJAN HORSE and is responsible for destroying a Fortune 500 company. In fact, Tomi Ahonen, a former Nokia employee kept on posting very good analysis about Elop's management failures for months now.

He even went as far as concluding that Elop is 'DELUSIONAL'. And I totally agree with him on that!

I just hope those Nokia Board of Directors are not turning a blind eye on those very good points Tomi Ahonen has raised.

Have read that blog, and he should be sued as well.

Negative attitudes. Anyone ever used, played, or even have a wp7 phone? Please explain the flaws. Explain the flaws regarding mango or nodo. Or even the hate itself. Frankly tell what makes iphone or android better than the rest.

I have owned the OMnia 7 with WP7. Also had the NoDo update on it before i put it in the garbage bin.
not good at all. WP7 is the most buggy OS ive ever seen, even more than Android.
bada, MeeGo and WebOS are the best OSes out there.

good job on noting down what people did not want on your upcoming devices since symbian is really old now . But now you have the chance to either go with android or ios since it looks like you and apple are friends according to the public

and please do not disable the additional micro sd card storage on your upcoming windows 7 phone or you will only see very few people for that . please also try your best to add a good feature that does not come in stock windows phone 7 or more better just wait for windows 8 and make a nokia tablet since this operating system is only going to be for touch based computer and try to put a full hd video recording camera or try your best to put 3d cameras and stereoscopic screen like lg optimus 3d but not lg optimus pad which requires glasses .

One claim so far. Wp7 is buggy on omnia7, more than android. And bada, meego, webos is the best out there, despite their lack prensence in the market. Anyone else?

Nokia will just be another phone company now. They will do OK but they wont be the biggest anymore.

then why not stop selling nokia phones right now in the US if you are not going to support symbian there? the few people who intends to buy nokia in the US and read this article will now really go for an android phone or an iphone. nice way of selling your products.
