Nokia gives you 10 reasons to want the Nokia Lumia 1020

The Nokia Lumia 1020 took the majority of our attention this past week; and while our loyal readers probably don't need any encouragement to lust in their hearts for the handset the same way that Jimmy Carter told Playboy in 1976 that he lusts after...uh...let's just say peanuts, Nokia has posted a top ten list of reasons to want the device...

Isn't this more like maybe two reasons? Basically, the bullet points of how great the camera is (and it is damn good, that's for sure) was broken into their own separate reasons.

Whateverman, me thinks your Android piece o' junk is already jacked, and is now part of an open source mobile botnet which compromises other people's devices that come into contact with you. Meanwhile, my own lovely WP Lumia 1020 is going to be be used for secure online banking, and will serve as a replacement for my point & shoot digital camera... This is the ultimate 41MP smartphone camera, and there are no substitutes. Now please get your worthless malware infested toy outta my face, comprende?

Oooooooooh, touched a raw nerve that time huh? What can I say, it's a gift. Never really had a problem with WP until the fanboys started mouthing off, so since we're going there let me get in on the fun too. It's a real shame how my malware infested toy runs circles around your camera with the half-baked OS. I'd rather carry an Asha, then to use WP. All it is, is a Kin with an AppStore. No one bought the Kin, and no one is buying Kin 2.0 either. But there is great news, you guys are getting a new size option for live tiles. Now you have small, medium, and large. Ooh, talk about customization. Keep this up, and you guys will get wallpaper by the 2020! I'm so envious, maybe I'll download the WP8 launcher from the Google Play so I can have a phone like yours... Wait, in the Permissions it says... "Will downgrade your awesome device to feature phone status. Removes the ability to multi task. Will not allow external SD card. No notification shade. No signs of individualality. You have to use bing." Oh, h*ll nah! Now i'm willing to give up a lot of features to give WP8 a try... But I draw the line at using Bing! Lol!

Whateverman, stop acting dumb. The point of the Lumia 1020 is to show off it's awesome camera, which is for the benefit for people who appreciate photography and don't want to carry a seperate point & shoot camera. I never said that the device was the king of the hill in every respect, but then I don't feel in the mood to be generous to Android users who claim their OS is unbeatable, even though the entire platform is compromised. The OS code itself runs slow, and it appears that there are backdoors that were previously undiscovered. I'm not going to get into the topic of net based security, but Android has a well deserved reputation for being anything but secure. That is it's greatest weakness, and from all accounts it seems to live up to that reputation rather well... WP8 OS is far from perfect, and it has does have many weaknesses, but security isn't one of them, and neither is fragmentation. I suggest that you take a deep breath, and learn to appreciate that the different platforms and respective OEMs also have different advantages and weaknesses. Nokia's mobile Pureview camera technology is unmatched, period. You and the others can rant all you like, but it won't change the fact that Nokia has been able to develop something unique to their own hardware and choosen platform. If you don't care about that kind of technology, then so be it. However, don't pretend that all others feel the same way, because they don't. I don't want to have a seperate point & shoot, and neither do many other people that I know who are passionate about their photography. This is not a replacement for a DSLR, but it's an awesome camera that is light years beyond anything that either Samsung or Apple has in their own smartphones. Take it or leave it, but get your facts straight before you start claiming to speak for the rest of the world!

UrbanPhanton, what I'm doing is mirroring. So if yo want me to quit acting dumb, all you have to do is stop acting dumb yourself. If you go back and re-read my first comment, you'll notice I was making reference to Nokia's MARKETING STRATEGY, that's it! But then your feelings got all hurt and YOU made it about the OS I was using. Now you can have your opinions and fears about Android, I'm not saying you can't. But don't steer every comment about Nokia into your hatred of Android. And what with putting words in everyone's mouth? I never said any of the things you accuse me of, but it seems in your mind I think Android is unbeatable, and I speak for the rest of the world...huh?!?! WTH are you talking about? My point: We see it has the best camera on a smartphone, period. As a tech fan, I need to see more than your camera. I need to see what else your phone can do, and many others feel the same way. Change my mind about WP8, because M$ and the WP fanboys will not change my mind about Android. Only Google and Android OEMs can do that.

It's funny, because he says that everyone that has something to say about Nokia or WP, they are paid, but all of the Nokia trolls on android articles are not. Hypocrisy at its best.

External SD has been available since day one. The original Samsung Focus has one, but it was a Class 10 when the market was just offering 4 and 6, so it wasn't "user-replaceable". The Lumia 810, 820, 822, and I believe 620 have all had replaceable MicroSD cards. Every phone is different to the user's preferences, just like Android. My Lumia has a different home screen than Troll's or Hoyton's, just as each has their own apps installed to their preference. A lot of folks prefer apps for everything, I prefer using Internet Explorer and using the full desktop website for full functionality (save Flash and uploading files), and just apps for games or particular utilities. Everyone is different. If you want to rag on an OS, do it tone that deserves it more than the others: ios

Box, I agree with you. And I know I took some low blows there that wasn't fair. Just had to shush the guy with the selective hearing and reading. I don't think WP8 is a bad OS, I've said on many occasions that it is actually really good, just not my preference. But the WP fanboys (not the true tech fans like yourself) always feel the need to remind me how much they think my device sucks, so I just wanted to give him a little.

And none of the reasons mentioned were WP8! I guess the camera is supposed to sell this device, not the actual OS or phone hardware or anything else! That says more about WP than anything!

Nokia is trying to sell their phone. The interface on WP8 is the same for all devices, so Nokia has to point what they have which differentiates them from the rest of the pack. In this case it is the best camera on any phone bar none. It is up to Microsoft to show people why WP8 is worth a try.

I'm so glad the Lumia 1020 comes with the same awesome HAAC microphones present on the first HTC ONE's! You know, the HAAC's designed exclusively for Nokia's RICH RECORDING technology that HTC is no longer allowed to purchase following a court injunction.

So it's basically $650-$700 unlocked...IF you're buying that phone because of the camera, then you are indeed CRAZY For that price, it can buy you a very good Micro 4/3rds camera like the Panasonic GX1 for $239 + a lens + a Nexus 4!!!!

1) That may be true, but then you're carrying two devices, both with their own separate charging and storage. 2) Who still buys a nexus4? Sure it's cheap and pure android, but it isn't really competitive with a top-shelf device like the 1020/920/925/928 anymore. Better to get an S4 or HTC 1 with the google-only experience (which, as I recall, are more expensive than a 1020, so no more budget left for that standalone camera). 3) The software in the 1020 makes it (arguably on a case-by-case basis) better than 97% of point-and-shoots and entry DSLRs (the cheap ones, not the Nikons and Canons, though some of those get outclassed in some aspects).

Which one is the best camera for an average camera user or even for a journalist? Canon ? Nikon ? Pentax ? –No, no, no. Answer: The best camera is the one you happen to have with you, when you need it ! All the sights, sceneries, buildings etc. are photographed millions of times on Earth, and those pictures are in Internet already! But for capturing a speedy moment of life, you need a camera which is always with you, charged, equipped with good optics, works in low light without a flash, with an HD video and allows good enough zooming. And it’s behind one button, anytime. Lumia 1020 is an answer for this. I do not need to carry and worry about another camera anymore! This is so simple.

It is funny how we behave like tribes here. So, here I go. If I want 1080p, I can have the S4 or the HTC One. If I need a waterproof phone, I can go for the Active or the Xperia Z. If design is my thing, I can go Iphone 5, HTC one or Lumia 925. However, if I want the best camera available mounted on a sturdy, reliable, pocket friendly phone, I could only go Lumia 1020.

but why cant they wait a little bit longer to include better internals and screen display? why include last year's internals? 2 years into contract, 3 years down spec? I'm feeling doubt to buy 1020, but the want for this camera is so strong. Why make compromise with your best phone to be?

I have asked myself the same, I guess we can't really see what lies behind a choice like that. It is easy to blame Microsoft and WP and its slow pace, (I find hard to belive 1080p is beyond Nokia manufactoring capabilities), but maybe it was the presure by the release of S4 Zoom. I have compared my Lumia 920 with my girlfriends S4 and its formidable 1080p. Only after close scrutiny, I was able to see the diference. It would be better if the 1020 had the 1080p, but I hardly think it would be a problem to me (given its camera prowess).

you see, sooner or later, WP going to gain traction. More and more resource intensive games going to come. By the time they come, I presume Windows Blue (which supports quad-core / 1080p and etc) has already landed. By that time, more of the top games will be designed around newer models with better internals. I'm afraid 1020 cant handle them smoothly (even within that 2 years). I don't worry bout display, cause it's kinda waste actually to put 1080p on a 4-5'' display. :)
