Nokia announces alternative to Bluetooth for small devices - Wibree

The new technology Nokia have developed, called Wibree, is not trying to compare with Bluetooth but to be a complement to it, as it requires much less battery power and is more suitable for small devices like watches, toys and wireless keyboards.

The Wibree has range of about 10 meters (like Bluetooth) and transfer of up to 1Mbps, and is designed for applications requiring extremely low power consumption, small size and low cost. Wibree will be implemented as either stand-alone chip for small devices or as Bluetooth-Wibree dual-mode chip for cellphones or other Bluetooth devices.
