Nexus Prime: what we know, and what we don't as of Oct. 7

0. phoneArena posted on 07 Oct 2011, 10:24

As the chips continue to fall into place, we want to gather it all up to cover what has been confirmed, what's still just rumor, and what is probably completely false when it comes to the Nexus Prime...

This is a discussion for a news. To read the whole news, click here

Sorry, I need to rant here and will probably be flamed.

How exactly is a better ppi than the retina display make it horrible? Especially considering we haven't even seen it. It could be worse it could be better. Maybe a blurry cam picture of the phone before we judge. (sarcasm)

How exactly is ICS rushed? That is a rumor at best. So, the Prime gets released October or November at the earliest and this is a rush job compared to the previous Nexus phones which were release in December and early January. Doesn't add up. Also, we keep hearing how Google wants to have the Prime compete with the iphone 5 head to head. When did this start? I understand Google competes with Apple.

It has one (I said one) of the latest dual-core processors but it's not the latest and greatest so what is the point of buying this phone. Can we be a little realistic? ICS is supposed to take full advantage of dual-core. Not to mention, right now Verizon has zero dual core phones on there network.

Just wait a bit. I can understand hoping for what the phone gets but those of you that are criticizing the processor, screen, or whatever....just move on. It doesn't solve anything.

.............. Really?

Droid X2?
Droid 3?
(two weeks away-ish) Droid Bionic?

What Verizon line up have you been looking at?

Meant to say zero dual-cores with LTE.

The point of the rant was to ask people to be objective about something that they have never seen or used. To say it is bad before anyone has experienced it is premature.

Hi Michael.

I really respect your position as an objective editor on this site - but I think that it is obvious that whenever Taco, or Miz or Gallitoking talk about iPhone - or about how it's supposedly better than android for that matter - their answer should be answered with:

As for the Nexus prime - here is another thing we know:

4. It's going to kick the iPhone 5's chair absorption part so hard, that the iPhone 5 will be buried deep underground together with all the 500,000+ apps it has covering it.

As for the camera - I really don't think that it'l remain a 5MP. Not that more pixels = better quality - but we are now in 2011. 8MP is a minimum for a late 2011 very high end device.

Part of being objective is understanding that disagreeing doesn't mean that someone is right and someone is wrong, or that one person is an idiot. Everyone has their opinion. Some opinions may be impervious to reasoning, but that doesn't mean we can't be civil to each other. People will disagree, and people will argue, but flame wars are the worst possible pathway from disagreement. It's a waste of everyone's time, and it's a waste of time for readers who may want to look through comments for interesting conversation.

I know that Taco and Miz will always take the side of Apple, but that doesn't mean it's impossible to converse with them. However, assuming that all those conversations will devolve into a flame war will be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Well, the thing is that coversation on this website revolves around phones - and their unique qualities and features. Sooner or later, a debate starts whether phone X is better in a certain aspect than phone Y.

However, as the past shows countless times - taco, miz, and to a significantly lesser extent gallitoking, not only take the side of Apple in these sorts of debates - but essentially in every argument possible - while on their behalf - most of the time not providing any reasonable arguments whatsoever as to why their opinion is such and such. Thus, a flame-war is ensued as the majority of people here - are rational thinkers - and cannot help themselves as to idly stand versus people who would probably go as far as saying that black is white if Apple declared it so.

It goes to very ridiculous heights, as you have probably seen - that in some circumstances these aforementioned individuals would state things which by the majority of the posters are interpreted as complete lunacy - as shown by the amount of thumbs down they regularly receive.

It is my sincere theory that these individuals in most cases are not interested in anything but gathering attention to themselves. However, we must be thankful to one certain individual called Sniggly, whom you undoubtedly know - who manages to reason with them in a civil and relatively respectful manner.

In conclusion - it is fine to prefer one side in this war (Apple Vs Android) over the other - as long as one makes reasonable arguments which do not defy logic on said debate, and does not go as far as zealously defending their phone (for example - claiming that a SuperAmoled HD display is not worthy of at least mentioning as an extraordinary feature, if not of excitement).

As much as I agree with nearly 100% of what you're saying, you sound a bit whiny. Miz, Taco and Gemini aren't going away anytime soon

Yeah, well you see, wumberpeb - I believe that a lot of people are browsing this site - reading these articles. In my home country - iPhone is much much much more popular than Android. All the local apps are written to iOS first, and to Android second, if at all. I intend to change all that - by arguing that Android is better than iPhone - but here come those aforementioned individuals - and because they post everywhere stuff like "Android is force close lol" and such - people actually infer from that that iOS is stable, while Android is very buggy. I own an iPhone 4, but even after watching several youtube videos, I can say that this is not the case. Far from it, in fact.

I am simply tired of a lot of people talking about iPhone and Apple as the holy grail which does not have any flaws, thus prompting more and more people to think this way.

iPhone's marketing secret is not so much it's marketing team - but the hordes of those "iSheep" who will always support it no matter what.

I completely agree with you ilia, regarding Apple and their "Garden of Eden" mentality they push forth onto the masses. There's no doubt that Apple and their brilliant advertising put forth a hint of smug, better-than-everyone vibe. I applaud your idea to change people's minds, but I strongly believe that 3 people (Miz, Taco and Gemini), on a website where the majority of posters support Android, couldn't possibly have more influence than the greater majority. The blame doesn't fall on their shoulders...

If you'd like to sway the majority's thinking, then great. I just don't believe there's much you can do to counteract a powerful (and national) advertising campaign. I stick to my original statement

I hope you're right then. Yes, I also think that no matter what rational individuals say - the iSheep will always prevail with their unbeatable logic of "Apple is teh best!!1".

i dont really know that the "majority" of people on the site are pro-android. I'd say its a pretty healthy split. The problem probably lies in the fact that many iOS people dont speak up because they see blathering idiots like taco and miz dirtying up any logical arguement they may have to make about something. If anything, the iOS side of the fence needs to take care of their own team and keep them in check so any rational counter arguements can be better heard.

There are a lot of us that are actually respectful to multiple opinions but we get pushed by the Taco-Miz-gemini-gallito lunacy to counter act them.
A great example of that would be on the Steve Jobs picture thread. Gemini and them came out yacking about how disrespectful the android regulars were being to steve jobs' health, but if u read the comments there was almost none of that. In fact most came out for Jobs' right to privacy. They were just trying to encite a flame war.

Its not even about "better phones". Everyone has a preference. Its about beeing completely blind to anything but the positives of "your side" of the fence, and therefore everyone else must be wrong at all times.

Here we go again o_O Oh well, it doesn' t surprise me anymore.....

Again: the absurd logic of comparing the sales of one phone (iPhone) VS the sales of an OS (Android) with phones for everybody on virtually any budget and on more networks sooner that the iPhone..... Oh Yes, it might be because Android understands that we are all different, with different needs.

The iPhone is a great device but I don' t see this endless fight over which one is better, the iPhone or all the phones on Android, (that for some reason some iPhone users assume that all Android devices have lots of problems, which would be as absurd as be me saying that ALL iPhone users have experience the grip of death)

bad logic. its iOS vs Android not phone vs OS. There are multiple iPhones for sale. The 3GS still sells as much as the i4. It has been 50 bux for quite a while and now its free, so there is an iOS for every budget as well.

Well - we know it's going to have an A5 dual core 1GHZ processor.

Why? Because that's the latest Apple got from Samsung - on the iPad 2 - and then - the whole Samsung-Apple relationship exploded, thanks to Apple - and Apple would not have had enough time to develop anything by itself - ot buy something else - by now.

We also know the display resolution won't change - since it's too early to change it. Seeing as there is only one phone, and all those devs behind 500,000 apps will need to change all their apps again - just a year and a half after changing them in 2010.

And because of this - we know that the display will not be larger than 4". Anything larger - and it's no longer 300+ DPI.

Oh, and let's not forget one tiiiiiiiny detail - we already know what the software will be like - BECAUSE WE HAVE ALL SEEN IOS 5, AND IT'S LACK OF FURTHER USER CUSTOMIZATION IN THE FORM OF WIDGETS, AND OTHER FEATURES. Unlike even iOS4 which introduced home screen wallpapers, and folders, might I add.

iOS4 which introduced android 1.5 ultralite in the form of wallpapers and folders.

iOS5 which introduces android 1.6 budget, which adds widgets and notifications.

iOS6 which will introduce android 2.2 full! Live backgrounds and wifi calling!

Afraid, I'm gonna have to correct you there remixfa - widgets were introduced in 1.5

1.5 was released in 30 April 2009. Even as of 30 August 2011 Apple does not have them.

iOS 6 will probably introduce 1.6 Voice search lol.

oh, i know it did, but android has had widgets since birth, so i was just going back to the first "major" android upgrade.

i didnt think it would be right to have to go the whole way back to android 0.5 (a guess lol) since no one had it. :)

What really gets me is that a widget layer already exists in Mac OSX! Sure, it would have to be implemented differently here, Android-style - but nevertheless - Apple simply has no excuse for not changing the homescreen layout since iOS 1.0..
