New renders of the Sony Xperia 2 leak
Sony's Xperia smartphone line has been a major disappointment for the company and every now and then there is talk that the company is pulling out of the business. Sony always gives the impression that it is throwing spaghetti at the wall and looking to see what sticks. This year, to make it look like it has scrubbed itself clean of the past and is starting from scratch, Sony named its new flagship model the Xperia 1. And it equipped the phone with a tall and wide display with an aspect ratio of 21:9.

Back in May, even before the Xperia 1 was released, the Xperia 2 leaked. In a way, that isn't surprising considering that the company has traditionally released its latest flagship phone every six months. The rumored specs for the device include a smaller (and easier to hold) 6.1-inch AMOLED display (compared to the 6.5-inch screen on the Xperia 1) with a resolution of 1080 x 2520. The Xperia 1 display offers a 4K resolution of 1644 x 3840. The dimensions of the Xperia 2 are said to measure 158 x 68.3 x 8.3 mm compared to the current model's 167 x 72 x 8.2 mm. Besides the smaller display size, the sequel will look like a smaller copy of the original with one exception; the triple-camera setup on back will now be found on the left side of the rear panel instead of the center of the back panel.

The Xperia 2 will have the same three rear cameras as the Xperia 1 but in a different location

A new render of the Xperia 2 has been published by Germany's WinFuture and the phone is expected to be unveiled at the IFA trade show that runs from September 6th to September 11th. While we are calling it the Xperia 2 for now, it is possible that the device will be given a name like Xperia 1s or Xperia 1v or even Xperia 1r. On a GFXBench benchmark test, the phone appeared carrying 6GB of memory and 128GB of native storage. The triple-camera setup will carry the same specs as the trio of snappers found on the Xperia 1; if true, the Xperia 2 will be equipped with a 12MP primary camera with an aperture of f/1.6, a 12MP telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom and a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera. With the smaller display, we could a small cut in battery size from the 3330mAh capacity battery used on the Xperia 1. The Xperia 2 will be powered by the Snapdragon 855 Mobile Platform and based on the renders, it features a small forehead, a small chin and thin bezels on the sides.

Sony recently dropped its projections for smartphone sales by 25% for the fiscal year that started this April 1st and ends March 31st of 2020. The original estimate that Sony released calling for 5 million handsets to be sold during the current fiscal year has been pared to 4 million units. That cut comes after the company announced that a record low 900,000 Sony smartphones were rung up during its most recently disclosed quarter. That marked the first time Sony has ever sold less than 1 million smartphones during a three-month period.

Sony appears to be all over the place when it comes to smartphone development as we pointed out with the spaghetti analogy. As recently as last year, Sony CEO Kaz Hirai said that the reason it doesn't just drop out of the sector is that it can continue to monitor what is going on in the communications sector until the next paradigm shift. The executive said that by continuing to sell handsets, it can remain a leader in the communications industry.
