New copyright fees lead Apple to hike the price of the iPhone and iPad in Germany

In Germany, new copyright fees have gone into effect with the start of the new year. Companies that manufacture or import into the country devices with recordable media, must pay certain fees for each device that is covered. Members of trade association Bitkom, which includes Apple, must pay a discounted levy of 5 euros ($5.43 USD) on each smartphone and 7 euros ($7.60 USD) for each tablet...

They don't need to charge 5 or 7 bucks to the customer. It's not the customers fault they have to pay these fees. It's the price of doing business. Apple never ever wants to pay anything. They don't wanna pay taxes, they don't want to pay a fair amount for nursing others IP and more. They are a disgrace to US companies.

All of you are a bunch of clowns. Then stop buying ANYTHING in this country. Guess what ALL companies pass the cost to all products. Who is paying the tax on your fat A$$ when you buy a Big Mac at Mc Donald's? Do you think they absorb the cost ? Or a car? Or your cable? Samsung TV's? Wake up clowns you are paying for it!!!

Duh. We know many company pass off costs to consumers, but these are costs that can be absorbed because the phones and other products are already way overpriced.

Here is got one for you and this is based on US pricing. If you look at the Samsung Galaxy S, the cost to make it has increased with every single model. The S6 is said to costs Samsung as much as 280 to make for the Edge model. Even though the base S6 cost Samsung $30-50 more to make over three S5, the price still managed to start at $599 which is where it has been since the S4. Do the math. That means with every S sale since the s4, Samsung actually loses money on each by not rating the price. The Galaxy Note has been starting at $699 since the first model even though the Note 5 comes with far better components vs the original Note it still starts at the same price. Again consider this fact. It's costs a company more money to make all.its own stuff vs a company who buys the parts and uses someone else factory to put them together. Consider Microsoft. I remember when Windows cost $299 per copy. I remember when Office was 499 per copy. Yet the cost of Windows and Office has gone down. Windows now starts at $99, while office can be had for $65 for a Subscription. Yet both do more than the prior version before, both contain more lines of code. I am not saying Corporations don't past costs off to consumers they all do it. What many companies have done though is lower the costs on products that have higher volume sales and raise the cost on products that doesnt. But seeing that the iPhone has a 200-400% markup in cost depending on where you live, Apple could have eaten the $5-7 cost....Period

If they never paid for anything, they couldn't be even a company, they wouldn't even build things and they wouldn't even have so huge mass of satisfied consumers - that requires huge investment over time. And what the heck, they wouldn't even pay in this case if they didn't wanted. Of course somebody won't be happy to pay something, if that somebody does not think they should pay for. How this is going to benefit consumers ?

Can you read or are you blind dumb and stupid. I said they never "want" to pay anything. I never said they didn't pay anything at all. You are such a fool. Tell Apple to stop hiding $200B offshore and payat he 35% on it. Noni not saying Apple is the only tax dodging corporations.

The idiots on here don't care about Apple doing tax evasion dodging paying fees for anything because they're not from America if they were Americans they would understand that it hurts us not other companies and not other places in the world where are the ones that have to suffer by paying the taxes for companies like Apple that Dodge paying taxes then we have to pay higher taxes in each state on different items just to help make up for companies like Apple not paying taxes

You do realise companies like Apple and Google screw countries like Australia a lot more than they do in America A great example of this is Adobe, The Creative Suite Master 6 Collection in Australia costs $4,334 (US$). The same software carries a price of $2599 (US$) in the US. No reason was ever given why there is a $1,735 price difference? And its not just Adobe, a lot of products from companies like microsoft and google cost more in the Australia than in the US, for no reason. US Companies are selling Overpriced products taking at times $1,735 more in profit then if they sold it in the US and avoid paying taxes in that country and bring All of that wealth back to the US. They hurt us a lot more than they hurt the US or themselves.

I watched Tim Cook on CNN. The host basked Cook, why they wouldn't bring their money to the US. COOK says it is because they would take a 40% hit. I do agree with hom, the tax code needs to be adjusted to compensate for the change in technology. However, Apple steals other people stuff patents it and then when companies want to muse it and offer tonpay,Apple charges an extreme fee higher than anyone else. But when they get busted for infringement and the company says we want apple to pay this, Apple refuses an sonics not worth that we only are going to pay this anount. Apple wanted Samsung to pay a huge penalty per device for the crap they claim Samsung stole, but when busted stealing Sony IP and knowing kept using it and now they don't want to nosy the fair amount is hypocritical. How many fans called Apple out on it? I saw not a.single postbagainst Apple in that article except non-Apppe fans.

It feels almost like its taboo to say anything negative about apple or to mention they've just just as bad or maybe even worse then other companies. That said, never enjoyed the whole thing with large companies having to pay less tax in countries, apparently because they 'bring jobs' or whatnot, if anything bring a tax reduction to the average person, so that they have more money and can buy stuff that is increased a bit in price, though Apple's profit margin is insane compared to other companies, which is just...disgusting.

Apple has enough money and will make an out money by already overcharging for their products. They don't have to charge or increase products costs to the consumer to pay such small amounts. After all how many phones does Apple import to Germany? Even if it was 3m phones they can afford to pay that for their customers. Especially since in Europe they jacked up the costs on their products for almost no reason.

Well just saying, but Apple doesn't actually build anything, they just develop the software and design the hardware, I don't think they even own a factory (Google doesn't own any (bar the Automatic Vehicles)). It kind of pisses me off, Apple can say they're not polluting the environment in Asia because they technically aren't, as they talking about themselves, not their manufacturing partners.

Do you even know Apple doesn't pay tax here in Australia at all? Which is a disgrace to all of us. You are doing business in our country, please play by our law, please RESPECT our law. They don't just increased their products price here, but avoid taxes too?? That's why no one in my family (we practice tax law for living) never buy their products. Such greedy company. Shame on them.

They move their balance sheets on Ireland or other fiscal paradise just for avoid paying local taxes from where they are sucking money. They don't give back nothing from where they are making fortunes. Frankly speaking it is not only Apple in this situation. All the multinational companies are trying to do so. But some give back at least something.

Obama saved Apple because Apple was lining his pockets or backing his party financially, which is much cheaper than paying their due taxes. They also do nothing about proper pay/hours and working conditions for those working in China to build their products, many of whom go on to commit suicide. Apple knows there are suicide safety nets outside those manufacturing plants for a reason.

This has nothing to do with likening or hating It's about what is a reasonable cost to put to comsumers. If this was Samsung jacking up costs by 5 or 7 to its customers you would all be blasting them. Apple charges a hefty premium to absorb this costs. They charge you $100 for more storage when it costs them $25 maximum costs. The phone costs $220 to make and sells for $649 to start. It's already been stated Apple makes on average $600 per phone sale. With all that extra money if you can't pay $5 in behalf of the millions of people who support your products, then it simply makes you evil. I don't cre what company it is.

It's the only time I agree with you. Apple has really disgusting ethics of doing business, there aren't any saints in such profitable market but other companies seem to have a little honor and self respect. I hate Apple, I love their products, that's why I always look for used ones, they won't get my money that easy.

Meh, I don't generally agree with much that Apple does. But this brings to light that BS lawsuits and "copyrights" cost you more money. If enough people fight this with their elected officials, maybe they will see those costs removed. Now,people still aren't very intelligent for buying an iDevice.

The goal of most companies is to look out for their pockets first. How else are the CEOs going to afford to buy 6 to 7 cars a year?

You do realise Google does not want to pay taxes too? oh and so doesn't microsoft oh and a lot more US companies too. In Fact Apple, Google, Microsoft etc. are avoiding taxes and doing real douggy things to get around them, when ever a new law comes into practice, or a new federal/state tax the price of these devices are pasted on to the consumer one way or the other.

Apple absolutely should pass on this tax to the customer. In fact, I would suggest Apple should go further and list this punitive charge separately for all German customers so that they can see what their government has cost them.
