New Apple patent lends credence to OIS in the iPhone 6 camera

Recently, we heard a new rumor that rather than boosting the megapixel count on the next version of the iPhone, Apple was looking to improve the camera in other ways. The only real mention of how Apple would be attempting to improve the camera was with optical image stabilization (OIS). OIS is becoming more and more the standard on smartphone cameras, and a new patent application makes it look like Apple is working on the feature...

Good. That way, no one can steal camera ideas from Apple.

I know, I wouldn't want anyone to steal the same camera they have used for 3 years.

Funny and yet still competes or puts to shame everyone else's offerings. What does that say about the competition?

The camera on the iPhone 5S can't even touch the cameras on any Lumia high end Lumia models since mid-2013, G2, Z1, and let's not even mention the 1020. It competes with the S4 or Note 3, but is no way better.

Thank you for saying what I was about to Smurf.

+1,The iphone 5s is a brilliant performer over other devices out there with a larger 8mp sensor that means it has even better dynamic range, making it better in low light (the Z1 takes not-so-great low light shots btw). It has a new dual tone flash that is an industry first and it intelligently evaluates the amount of flash to get more accurate colors and skin tones. The 5S only beats the 1020 on control cuz seriously you can't just give someone on the street to take a shot without giving a little explanation. It's a notable patent because I remember a post here on PA mentioning that with a slim body the ip6 wasn't going to get ois but now that they found a way to do it I guess someone has to CALL whine-1-1, we need a wambulance!!

it is good but certainly not putting to shame much of anyone's offerings. Even with the level of integration and implementation its far from the best.

They will probably advertise it as the world's first OIS in a smartphone.

It's 2014, don't you think this "revolutionary" joke is a bit too old? Also you seem rather irritable, Kal. Are you on Kryptonite?

LOL that is funny... but technically it would be red kryptonite lol ...what irritates me is in the age where we should push our boundaries to free innovation and invention to achieve our greatest potential as a generation... apple wants to restrict and stop that motion with all this lawsuits and patents because of one reason .....they can't keep up.

''they can't keep up''??? That is why Apple has the first armv8 CPU that puts everyone else to shame.

And still uses an outdated screen 960-540. We are on 1080P Has 330Ppi, they said it was the highest 64Bit with 1Gb RAM,,, really? Lmfao. What a gimmick.. still lags and stutters when motion control is on. Underpowered by not providing a bigger battery so they can rinse and make 300% profit by not providing a 2000Mah battery. What i don't understand is iOs is a very light Os, with fake multitasking which apps freezes when opening another app. ArmV8 is a A57 A15 CPUs, which even clocked at 1.3Ghz should preform like a 2.3Ghz. Cause it is a beast of a chip, which has 100% more Torque and uses less power to preform as a 2.3Ghz chip. Looks like they totally underclocked it and used A9 cores but not a full pure A15. Like what Snapdragon800. Sacrafice power by saving battery. What a joke. I prefer power over not having battery lasting long, well atleast you can enjoy the power of a true A15s.

I get the feeling a lot of people here just don't understand anything about patents. You can patent something to do the same thing as another patent in a different way. Or you can patent related technologies without being the original inventor, like adding on new things to an existing patent. This patent means Apple came up with their own way of doing OIS. It doesn't mean they can turn around and sue HTC or LG for already having phones with OIS, and if you think they will then when has that ever happened? (hint:never)

They sued Samsung and won and one of their major reasons for filing suit was that the Samsung "stole their chasis design, and it hurt their iPhone sales." Ray Charles could see that the Galaxy Devices do not resemble the iPhone. Do you read the news? If you don't think this won't turn into them trying to sue other companies based off of similar reasoning with this patent, you're sorrily mistaken.

Are you kidding me? The original galaxy S device was damn near a carbon copy of the iPhone 3G/3GS. Sorry bro, you just lost all credibility with that one. This is where the samsung/ Apple court wars started. It really had nothing to do with the current galaxy s devices. Yes some of the newer devices came into play, but that is just the back and fourth war they have going on. They originally went after them with the galaxy s. The thing even had software that looked like ios. They didn't take the idea and do it there own way.

A carbon copy that ran an OS that looked/looks nothing like iOS, and vastly different dimensions? Interesting...

You might want to go check out the first Galaxy S and see what Samsung did to the UI. It definitely looked like the iPhone but thank goodness Sammy went in a different direction with the S2 which was probably the best of the S series. That phone was awesome in almost all respects IMO.

Carbon copy? Did you have ever seen a galaxy with iphone 3g/3gs?? I am sure you didnt and even if you did, most probably you were without your spectacle othrrwise you might never call it a carbon copy...

I owned both phones in the past, and the GS1 did look a lot like the iPhone. I saw it myself.

nctx77, see if anyone believes that the galaxy S looks nothing like the 3g/3gs they are best ignored.

Lol selective memory? The Galaxy S that looked like the iPhone wasn't even released in The USA. How Apple used it in court was beyond me because the carrier variants were totally different. And they got Samsung for the Nexus S which wasn't even fully designed by Samsung.mstoo being a moronic Apple lover and open your eyes. You clueless ifans are not only hypocritical but also stupid and ridiculous.

Apple regulary patents stuff others come up with. It's unfortunately industry standard practice. They did it with the fused screen design that Samsung already had out, as an example. OIS is decades old as well, with Canon being one of the ones who had it first with their old camcorders. Sony does it digitaly with their old ones as well. Or do you seriously think Nortel came up with online advertising and a mobile gui?
