Motorola could be on the hook for $16.2 billion in patent dispute with Apple

0. phoneArena posted on 03 Dec 2011, 14:19

In a court hearing on Friday, Apple estimated that Motorola would need to post a $2.7 billion bond every year if it decides to seek a preliminary injunction against iCloud that subsequently gets overturned; with the case possibly lasting until 2018, Motorola could be on the hok for $16.2 billion,,,

Well now. Quite a gamble. If Motorola follows through on the injunction, their lawyers better make damn sure that they have an ironclad case.

On the other hand, this seems like a last ditch threat by Apple to dissuade Motorola from kicking its ass in court. "If you lose, I'll get SO MUCH FREAKING MONEY FROM YOU! Bwahahahahahaha!!!!"

Yea, go Motorola, use your money to improve your all ready great products. They might've deserved it, but I have to admit, I don't like patent wars with apple, they are probably now going to look for the stupidest things to sue you for...

Which I don't think is much of a problem for them, but is annoying, and I hate reading Phonearena everyday about Apple suing someone because they made something better than them...

If you are Motorola, living in the Android apartment complex, and you see Apple, who lives alone in the great and spacious iOS mansion on the big hill just outside of town, go after a bunch of your neighbors, like HTC and Samsung, and then you hear grumblings in the community that your landlord, Google, and maybe even you, are the next target(s), would you not go on the offensive first, rather than wait for the inevitable and suffer an identical fate?

Nah... never mind, I already know your answer... something to do with Motorola running away or jumping off the nearest cliff, no doubt?

Because you know that we applaud moves like this because it's mainly done in defense against Apple, right?

Motorola is the only major Android manufacturer to go after Apple first, and it was only after Apple spent years flipping off Motorola in response to Motorola's request for royalties on tech Apple used which Motorola spent decades developing.

Then Apple was like, "You know, we're allowed to use anyone's tech we want, but when we do, our products become special unique snowflakes which NOBODY is allowed to emulate, mimic, or evoke in THEIR designs!"

And thus the metric s**t ton of lawsuits was dropped on Android.

um first off it wasnt apple who started this... it was microsoft.. and they do more anticompetitive, money taking, product claiming, whatever u want to call it than apple.. why should apple not try and make money off of products that look very similar? u dont see them suing wp7.. thats because its not the same...

apple isnt trying to make money lucas. apple has yet to sue any of these companies for damages like MS does. Apple's end game in every suit is banning the company from selling any products in that country. that is the difference.

If they wanna sue and get money for patent infringement, fine. if they wanna sue because they are losing market share and would rather ban than innovate, that is not fine. thats the difference.

You wouldn't have MS doen't like to go to court they say hey you used my patents give me 20$ for every unit you sell you know what I like you so I'm gonna cut you a break give me 10$ a unit and make my products and I won't break your legs

Probably because Microsoft settles out of court and they are not the biggest asses out there.... Apple doesn't want money they want products banned.... That's anti-competative......

well heres the deal, apple arent suing everyone off because of tthere technologies, its because there using android. let me take you back to when these two operating systems were in there early development, at the time google and apple enjoyed a close relationship. Apple even had google executives as members of there board of directors.

during this time apple created ios 1. little time passsed before google released its mobile os, android 1.0. apple felt betrayed by google and began a lawsute campaign against any android device to which they could find any excuse possiible. steve jobs even said that he would spend every bit of his companies assets to bring android down.

the biker,
if your going back in time, then u should go the whole way back in time to when android was created.. which was before iOS. Google bought Android long before steve jobs showed off iOS to anyone.

And if this yes yet another taco fake account, learn your damn lesson. They can track every account back to you and can/will keep banning them.

Are you accusing every poster of being taco now? First this wasn't even pro Apple. He said they had a good relationship and then Steve Jobs got pissed at Google. That's all true. Also what a lame argument about android being in development before iPhone was announced. They had a whole year after iPhone was released to redo their OS. There's lots of things android took from iOS.

yet, taco,
the only thing that actually changed after iOS was released was going from a motoQ/BB style device to a touchscreen/keyboard device.
I dont know how thats copying. Apple still doesnt have a keyboard option.

oh wait.. the world didnt start until apple said it could, right? lol

My new iPhone 4 App is called iSueU, I'm loving it, it is teaching me how to steal ideas, and how to turn old technology into something somewhat new and call it groundbreaking, and go "This changes everything". But what I like the most is the fact that it's teaching me how to sue everyone that looks at my iPhone and wear the same colour [or color] t-shirt as me. This is the best App of the year. and it's free. go check it out on App Store.http://www.appstore.iDiots/useless.apple

Hahaha... nice! Well played sir, well played...

My brother has had a 3GS for a couple years now, and his wife just got a 4S this week. We all were playing with Siri for a while this evening just for kicks and giggles... it was very entertaining, all sorts of funny little easter-eggish stuff. If I was not so skeptical and fiercely independent (as in, not too enthused with the latest smartphones, and unsatisfied with the costs and limitations involved, among many other things...), I might have transitioned to an iPhone by now. I do think that, for a phone that is difficult to root or otherwise modify on the OS software end (well, mods are, technically, unauthorized by Apple...), the iPhone works exceedingly well out-of-the-box. I am fairly sure my mobile OS-modding days are over at this point... I am too tired to keep going when things are way too different from what I am used to working with. At this point, in the new competing business models, there will always be either risks or limitations with new smartphones... either you take care of the risks yourself, or you accept the OEM limitations that are required to manage the risks on your behalf.
