Motorola DROID X gets Android 2.3 OTA upgrade; is Netflix coming to the device?

0. phoneArena posted on 12 Apr 2011, 21:53

The Motorola DROID X received an OTA upgrade today that takes the device to Android 2.3.3 and brings a new Bootloader to the phone which will kill off root access; speculation that there is a .jar file with the word Netflix in it could mean that the DROID X users will soon have the Netflix application to use...

Ph, you're welcome! I'm glad I could help you. I just check comments sections of stories I'm paying attention to in between customers at work. The gingerbread keyboard doesn't have a dedicated comma key on the letter tab, but if you press space it appears in the predictive text space. Also, now long pressing any of the top keys inserts the corresponding number assigned to them. It seems very easy and simple to me. :)

That's plenty good enough for me. I don't know if other X's show the comma as a predictive text option, but I do know mine does not. I'll wait a couple of weeks and read reviews of Gingerbread on the X, but now at least I know I have a reason to upgrade.

If any of you have read any of my posts here you will easily know I am not a fan of motoblur AT ALL. However after reading about GB on the droid x I decided to dust off my old droid x and give it a shot. Before I make any comments about GB on the Droid X let me start off by saying how bad of an experience I had with 2.2 on the Droid X. It became very laggy, unresponsive, constantly freezing up, and crashing. It would even shut itself off almost every day. It got so bad that the once loved and favorite phone I ever had I began to despise. So I stopped using the phone and got the TBOLT.

2.3 on the Droid X is amazing. They have fixed every issue I have had with the droid x. I have everything loaded up on my phone and it is constantly pulling in data off widgets and facebook, etc. I have tested it out by putting several running apps and it works flawlessly. Even when every homescreen has widgets, apps, etc on it. Scrolling through homescreens is lag free. The pinch to zoom on webpages(even ones like this one and running flash) is very fast and fluid. I have been using the droid x all day and night and have not had one problem. I love the new color layout and I have noticed how much faster, smoother, and crisper games look.

Now comparing the TBOLT and DROID X, I also did some benchmarks and despite that the TBOLT is a much newer and has better hardware the results were very close. TBOLT only got slightly better results. Yes the TBOLT has super lcd and it looks much better than the droid x and the screen is wider and the it's smaller(even tho the same screen size) But still the Droid X is lighter, thinner, and most importantly has much better battery life.

Another thing that you need to be cautious of is the fact that the TBOLT does NOT have a Gorilla Glass while the Droid X does. I have heard that the TBOLT's screen is very fragile and can crack easily.

Overall, I will say that 2.3 on the droid x is a very needed improvement and has given new life to the phone. Motoblur works and looks much better and if this is the direction that they are heading, I just might have to give the Bionic a try.

I have the X and after just reading this tried to update my phone and received a message that there was no update available for my phone. Is there a way to get this now. I thought about rooting a coulple of weeks ago, but missed the opportunity because of the bootloader. Now it's out and I want it. HELP ME PLEASE

Thanks Sniggly for sharing. How about the impacts on rooting? Will this upgade lose root access and it prevents the user from regaining the root access?

Downloaded 2.3 using the system update option, chose 'yes' when it asked if I wanted to install it now, it went through the reboot and install and displayed my home screen.

I did a single touch to the home screen and the system froze. I am hesitant to pull the battery (the power button isn't reacting) since I don't know if anything is happening in the background and am concerned with corrupting necessary files.

I'll give it a few more minutes and then pull the battery with fingers crossed.

Pulled the battery and the phone booted fine. First thing I noticed is that FourSquare no longer functions. It's shortcut shows but when touched a "application is not installed" message appears. In the app marketplace it shows there is an update for FourSquare and once the update is done it now works.

The icon for the Zedge app has gone missing and is using the default icon for the system. Deleting the shortcut and adding it off the apps menu restores the icon.

The trash bar now appears at the top of the screen instead of the bottom and is in red (nice way to highlight it : ) ).

Everything seems to be working faster than before and the color scheme/theme is much nicer with a crisper feel.

Best thing that could happen with a phone was ginger bread. Now what about Netflix?
Are we getting it sooner then expected since its put already and this magnificent phone doesn't have it... ????

The led light for missed calls- recent emails and text does not work like before and you don't have the option to send text to groups from the menu like before. I personally don't like the new 2.3.3 version.
