Microsoft details the camera "magic" in the Lumia 950 and 950 XL (with pictures)

There's only about one month to wait before the Microsoft Lumia 950 and 950 XL are released and as is tradition with high-end Lumia devices, the expectation is that the camera will be killer. Today, Microsoft published a pretty in-depth (and poetically worded) blog post talking about what it calls the camera "magic" built into the new Lumia flagships...

That's not true at all. Samsung was doing their best to make good cameras in their feature phones prior to the iPhone, and Nokia is known for its good cameras dating back to Symbian before the iPhone. Apple only joined in when it joined the mobile phone industry -- after Nokia and Samsung. And ever since then, Nokia has had excellent (and honestly better in terms of IQ) cameras, while Samsung has rocketed to among the top ever since the Note 4. But yes, it is now a trend for many more smartphone manufacturers to give their full attention to the cameras as well.

Well explanations, Penny! You really know this industry very well. I still have some pics of Nokia 5300 taken back in 2005/6, man they still rock!

Thanks! But I can't profess to be industry expert. I know what I've experienced personally, or what I've read from other people's experiences. We don't really need to be experts as long as we can be objective and honest with ourselves. That's all you really need to see things as they are.

In 2007, when the first iPhone was released (with an average 2 MP still camera and no video until 2009), Nokia had N95 with 5 MP 1/2.5" sensor and VGA video. In 2006, There was N93 with 3 MP sensor, VGA video and optical zoom. Meanwhile, Sony Ericsson had the K850/K800 line of phones, with 5 or 3 MP sensors, xenon flashes but only QVGA video. So ... There you go.

It sure will be funny if this outdoes the iPhone. Every other flagship already does and the iPhone will end up being rock bottom of the barrel.

Of course, PA will never include the Lumia 950's in any of their image comparisons. They will say they are to small of a sales base to be a contender.

Of course it will out do the iphone, that's a given. Lumias or Nokias themselves have always had the best cameras hands down - Lumia 930 and 1520.

Apple is perfection. Every time they make something, it literally cannot be improved. The fact that they manage to improve it every year is just a testament to their magical abilities, to improve upon perfection. I imagine this is how Apple-bubble inhabitants reason. I'm not an Apple hater; I respect what the company produces. It is the mindless masses that I cannot stand...groupthink.

Totally agree. I think Apple makes great products, sometimes the best in certain areas and sometimes even overall. But like you, I am weary of the "Apple-bubble" "mindless masses" (I agree with your terms too) who think that Apple products are the best at every single thing and that nothing else even comes close. Kind of makes me think of North Korea.

I appreciate your response, thank you. North Korea would be a good analogy. It's not that I don't respect their opinions, it is simply that the majority of people I know form their opinions from a place of ignorance. Smartphone/technology related features and capabilities often don't enter their reality until Apple hands it to them. Just like some people I've spoken to recently sharing their awe about the beauty of 4k video, because it all of a sudden matters. That's the most frustrating part to me as an eternal enemy of ignorance.

These new Lumia handsets are shaping up to be two of the best handset releases this year. Between the 950/950XL and the BlackBerry Priv, I'm going to have two awesome handsets to pick up this holiday season. Eagerly anticipating camera comparisons between the new Lumia's and the LG G4, Note 5, S6/S6 Edge/Edge+, the Sony Z5/Z5 Premium, and the iPhone 6s/6s Plus.

I'm also very keen to see the camera comparisons. I hope the various tech websites don't leave them out this time.

You can't take it that the 808 still is the best cameraphone and not your favorite samsungs!

camera is good with plenty of detail in well lit shots but symbian is the real torture chamber, which made this phone pathetic to use. By the way, camera is good but it has some significant draw backs. It is slow and it has focusing problem with very close objects. I cannot have a nice focus on a very close object. My favorite Samsung has a better over all camera than 808. 808 tops in some aspects and lack behind in some, while note 4 was a very well over all package...

HDMI out, USB OTG, best call log I ever used, great battery life from less than 1500 mAh, responsive and smooth UI on ancient hardware even by 2012 standards. So ... There you go.

I have a few friends they are Apple worshippers, they even have Apple stickers in their bedroom.....sad right hahah. And they still think that iphones have the best camera, everytime i tell them no that is just bullsh!t, they laugh at me......yeah yeah sure you use Nokia/Microsoft phones so you are not allowed to talk with us about phones...........talking about tunnel vision! So i asked them a few times, if your iphone camera is the best let us have a competition, your iphones against my 1020 and 1520.......and till now they don't want to test this out. Everytime excuses, they know that the iphone camera is not that good so they always chicken out.....pussy's! The 950 will beat the 6s easily, we live in 2015 and iphones still record mono sound pathetic! My 1520 records Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 sound, the 950 will do the same!

Nokia and Sony have always been pioneers in the camera department....it's no surprise to me that the Lumia 950is in fact one of the best smartphone camera
