MediaTek's working on an updated Helio P60 chip with improved AI capabilities
Since its launch back at MWC 2018, MediaTek’s Helio P60 chip has reportedly seen high demand from various Chinese smartphone manufacturers such as Xiaomi and Oppo, something that has been largely beneficial to the company’s finances. Now, in a bid to keep up the momentum, a new report claims MediaTek will introduce an updated version of the chipset by the end of this year.
The current-generation processor initially hit headlines due to its enhanced AI capabilities – something MediaTek sees a central part of its future growth – and the fact that it was built on the newer 12nm process. This was coupled with the octa-core setup featured inside that is capable of being clocked at 2.0GHz and ARM’s Mali G72 MP3 GPU which, at the time, was the most powerful graphics unit offered by the company. Since then, though, ARM has gone on to introduce the Mali G76 which is now expected to be included within the updated Helio P60. This, combined once again with the 12nm process, should allow MediaTek to improve not only the performance of the chip but its energy consumption too. Also, in addition to all of this, the Chinese company is expected to further enhance the AI capabilities in a bid to attract even more customers.
Presently, there is no exact timeline for the updated processor, but the report claims that an announcement will take place during the second half of 2018. Taking this into consideration, and the fact that the brand has previously held events in August, it’s possible that the new offering could be revealed before the end of summer.
