Many Samsung Gear wearables are incompatible with Android Pie phones
Just like Wear OS smartwatches, Samsung’s Tizen-powered Gear wearables are technically compatible with both Android handsets and iPhones. But although the combination of a Gear S3 and iPhone X, for instance, is typically not ideal, the two will still work together better than Samsung’s watches currently function when connected to certain Android phones.

That’s because many owners of the Gear S3, S2, Gear Sport, and even Gear IconX are complaining their wearable devices refuse to play nice with Android 9 Pie. This has apparently been going on for several months now, and although Samsung promised the issue would be contained before Android P beta tests concluded, here we are.

The official Pie update has started to roll out to Google’s Pixel devices and the Essential Phone, and the bug still hasn’t gone away. It’s a serious glitch too, reportedly crashing and randomly rebooting phones running the latest Android OS version when trying to connect them to a Samsung Gear wearable.

Of course, different users are reporting different manifestations of this critical bug, all seemingly deriving from the main Samsung Gear app. It appears the best course of action for now is to leave that untouched if nothing’s wrong with your connection. Meanwhile, Samsung continues to investigate the cause, promising a fix... since forever. Any day now!
