LG G3 vs Sony Xperia Z3 camera comparison: here's how LG's flagship outpaces the Z3

Our last camera comparison was of the blind variety – we presented our readers with samples from two highly acclaimed smartphones and asked them to pick a favorite. Then several days later, we revealed that the handsets used in the shootout had been the LG G3 and the Sony Xperia Z3, of which the former got the majority of the votes. And rightfully so as LG's flagship did perform a bit better than its counterpart, and in the paragraphs below, we'll go over how the two handsets' cameras stack up against each other...

Well, Sony needs to work on the 'intelligent' auto mode more... The photos, except a few points here and there, are awful for a fall 2014 flagship.

I used 2 Xperia (Xperia Neo and Xperia S) I don't know why but Sony is far behind in Software. The Hardware are great but the Camera software are BS.

They always produced the best hardware since they existed and they always had mediocre software in any product they ever made. Its weird that they dont invest in software after all these years of user complaints.

If you know about a little about camera lens and sensor, you would know that the 20.7MP is a big fat lie. Beside the Z3 bootloader is locked which tied to post-processing software in the TA partition. Obviously they don't want anyone to know that they're cheating. I bought a Z3C last week and I've been feeling like a fool ever since. The Z3C display is the worst I've ever seen. IPS or not, colors are dull especially cold colors. 5 years old tech on flagship devices, go figure. No anti-glare or anti-fingerprint coatings. I'll never buy another Sony junk for the rest of my life. Well, at least my 14 years old sister likes this phone or I would have returned it with 15% restocking fee.

N82 has a better camera than Z3. Sad, but true.

I made the comment above just to let everyone knows about Sony products. I didn't want to bash Sony but I had to let people knows the truth. I don't want to see anyone falls victim for this scam. In the past 2 years I've bought 3 Sony phones total. First the ZR which got so hot just surfing the web so I returned it. Then the ZL I got for my sister. Both phones used TFT displays (bad colors reproduction, bad viewing angle, use more power...) but Sony did NOT post these display specs on their website. Funny that IPS tech on mobile has been around for a long time since iPhone 4 perhaps but this lame company decided to use TFT on their flagships. And now we had moved on to Super AMOLED and IPS+ about 3 years ago but this company only put IPS on their current flagships. Don't get me wrong, I would be very happy if my Z3C has the same display quality of the iPhone 4 which was made 5 years ago. And if it does, I would buy 4 more Z3C for my family members. Enough said. Sony fanboy or not, use your brain if you got one.

sony has visibly inferior displays in mobile phones and I have experienced it whenever I put xperias with any other OEMs flagships

I wrote an honest review on BH Photo where I bought the phone and one on gsmarena. It's been over a week now but my review is nowhere to be seen. I wonder why Sony would use their money to pay these sites to keep negative reviews out instead of spending more for quality parts on their flagships.

All Sony needs to do is release a software update. It's really not the hardware. Also in manual with no editing you can get some really good shots. Here's a better idea taken handheld at ISO 200. https://flic.kr/p/qmHnqohttps://flic.kr/p/q5dnewhttps://flic.kr/p/qmHnk3

But Sony is good at making cameras, I suppose the problem is the software on their smart phones.

Phonearena can you please explain me why do you do those tests? They are not fair. Xperia will beat LG G3 and some other phones when you turn on manual mode. I have xperia phones for two years and I never use auto mode. Never. Everywhere where you look everyone will tell you if you have an xperia phones use manual mode only because in manual mode the camera shows all that it has to offer and it has a lot to offer. It's not fair comparison. It's like to turn off all what is the best in that phone and compare it to others. Auto mode is the mode for complete amators. In LG there is no manual mode and it uses all the camera power in auto mode. In xperia phones there is manual mode which is very very good and photos are excellent. In video there is nothing better than image stabilisation that is built in xperia phones on the market. Any other smartphone has so good stabilisation. Any. I do not agree with you totally. All your tests look like you criticise xperia all the time but maybe you just don't know how to use the camera in xperia phones he? So why to do those comparisons if you don't know how to compare them?

If you're good with camera manual mode, why do you even bother with these phone cameras? I have a DSLR and many lens. I also took photography back in college days. Manual mode is complicated, especially on DSLR. Phone camera is all about convenient and ease of use. Capturing the moment you want is much more important than having a high quality image. So it is fair that PA used auto mode to test these cameras. Beside, it's just ridiculous to have a professional to set up the manual mode and lightning for these tests with phone cameras. Hmm... You're lame.

And that's not only my opinion. Go to Google+ and find xperia phones circle you will see all the great photos taken only with xperia phones and believe me they are excellent. If you do not believe me then check. My opinion is that you phonearena guys cannot use xperia phones that's all I wanted to say.

Whatever idiot! If Sony can pack a quality 20.7MP into that tiny space, Canon and Nikon would be out of business. Be a Sony fanboy is fine but being stupid is another. Educate yourself some about camera lens and sensors/crop sensors. Google is your friend.

Proud owner of Xperia Z3 here. I like everything about the phone but this review is correct. The camera has been a huge disappointment for me. I had a big family gathering at my house not too long ago and we were taking bunch of family photos and pictures taken from Galaxy S5, Note 4, even LG G2 looked better. I still like the phone alot but I'm hoping Sony improves their camera on Z4.

I am disappointed both by Sony, who's leading on the compact cameras by having disappointing results and disappointed by PA because they can't even show the manual mode. But I do like how they ditched out the hideous picture gallery though, although still a bit slow...

Sorry guys, the Xperia does not come close to competing with the likes of the G3 in any category besides battery life. Also, not being supported by major carriers speaks volumes enough.

isn't it stupid to compare details when the other photo is nearly half the resolution of the other one? with a wider field of view to boot!!! if they want to compare details, they could have set them to have the same resolution. it's okay to compare everything else for color reproduction, saturation, contrast, etc etc... for details, they have to use some of their unused brains.
