Why would Apple make notches on the iPhones? The TrueDepth camera system is hosted in the top BEZEL.

I knew Leo wouldn't be able to resist this one! Lol Ok Leo, just for you, Apple will be reducing the size of the fugly, intrusive "bezel". Call it what you like but it's definitely an eyesore.

Smaller bezels are always welcomed.

Leo_MC why have a big notch on top, especially when Apple is changing the FaceID camera setup to a Time of Flight camera instead. FaceID consists of multiple sensors, where as 1 ToF camera can replace all of Apple's current FaceID stuff, like the IR camera, 3D dot (30,000 dots) projector, and a regular camera. So when Apple does decide to put on a single ToF camera, then it will naturally save space on top. Not hard to figure out. Also Apple's FaceID can only scan a face. Where as the new ToF camera can map anything and everything in its view. It's a no brainer that ToF is superior, and why it's already used on a number of Android smartphones.

When - and if - Apple is going to adopt a tof camera and - if - it will put it under the screen, the top BEZEL will be smaller; until then, the only "notch" in iPhone is the dent where the speaker grill lies.

Leo doesn't seem to grasp that a cut-out in the screen fits the definition of notch: an indentation or incision on an edge or surface. You're very right on it being an eyesore. At least they're making it smaller now, of course Android OEMs are moving towards complete notchless and near bezelless display next year. But it's only innovation if Apple does it, am I right Leo?

There is no cutout in the screen of X-series iPhones; Apple EXTENDED the screen to the right and at the left of FID/ff camera system, shrinking the top bezel, just like LG did with V-series a long time ago.

"Apple EXTENDED the screen to the right and at the left" Do you seriously believe that crap?

That's a fact, not a crap. First it was the top bezel of iPhone 7 (+) than Apple extended the display where used to be the bottom bezel and extended where the top bezel used to be one to the level you see it in the X.

"That's a fact, not a crap." Here's a perfect instance of his poor understanding of colloquial English. Leo it's supposed to be "not crap", there's no "a" unless you're "taking a crap" for example. You simply don't understand English properly and continually make a fool out of yourself.

I'm pretty sure that if I use the indefinite article for the first word, I also have to use it for the second. I looked twice to see if I am on a English language forum - I'm not, so let's get back to talking tech.

Then you'd be pretty wrong. Look 500 times and you'd still be wrong. You interpret English like a robot. That's not how language works you dummy.

I’m ok with people like you thinking I’m being wrong. Get over it.

They extended the display top and bottom. Then they cut out a portion at the top for the camera and sensors. Eyes will tell you this, but you have to use them.

There's nothing "cut out": Apple simply extended the display, leaving a space in the middle for a tiny bezel which hosts the FID system.

Take the “L”, Leo. You’re convincing no one.

I don’t have to.

Tiny, are you joking? It is one of the biggest notches/cutouts/bezels or whatever you want to name or misname it (in your case), on compatible phones.

Xperia. Galaxy Note, S9, pixel, G8S, M20p. Those are some of the best devices and they all have big top bezels.

The Samsungs do not have big top bezels, a big bezel is like that on iPhone 6,6s,7, and 8 models or of course those with huge notches like the X.

S9’s top bezel is bigger than the top bezel of iPhone X. Ps: where is the link to Apple’s official statement where it uses the word “notch”?

69. wickedwilly

You are incorrect the X has a huge cutout, notch or extended bezel whatever you want to call it. That means a much bigger bezel than the S9. Yet again you ignore the obvious and think you are correct. As I said, I have already sent you a link showing that statement, so why do you keep asking. You denied it last time when I sent it so why keep lying.

Yes he does unfortunately. Leo is from Romania and English is his second language so he's learned it strictly through a dictionary. As far as he's concerned a notch can only be one thing. He also thinks a Lemon can only be a fruit and not, for example, a crappy item like a car. We can only sympathize with him for now until he's cured.
