Japan Display (JDI), announced that it has started production of a 6-inch screen with an 18:9 aspect ratio and a 1440 x 2560 resolution. JDI is calling this the "Full Active" LCD display which employs a new high density wiring allowing the bottom bezel to be as thin as the other three sides. 6-inch amd 18:9... fine. But LCD? Wonder which Android OEM would want to use it for their flagship... Well, unless thry do not want their flagship to be Daydream compatible.

no..... hopeful it won't be the trend.。 I still prefer the old school ratio than the wide screen.

You don't like the wide screen? Hate to break it to you but that is the old school ratio(16:9). I think you meant to say that you don't like the long screen because once you go over 5.5in with the 16:9 ratio the screen just gets wider and wider, 18:9 on the other hand increase the length of the phone and keeps a slim width.

4:3 is old school. You want that?

If this means they make a 'bezel-less' phone without a massive chin, then game on.

1440x2560 is 16:9. So, either the aspect ratio or the resolution is wrong (I guess the latter).

Anything more than 17:9 it's too tall. Let's hope 16:9 screens don't go away like 16:10 laptops did.

Yeah, because there's such a huge difference between 17:9 & 18:9.

Yes there is a difference. 17:9 is right on the cusp of being too tall so I said anything more than that and it's just too much. My phone is 17:9 now and up against the S8+ and it's 18.5:9 ratio you can see how ridiculous their aspect ratio looks in person

If you say so, buddy. Just out of curiosity, what phone do you own that sports a 17:9 aspect ratio?

Xiaomi Mi Mix. Take a look at the dimensions. S8+ is 6.2 inch screen at 159.5mm tall and 73.4mm wide. Mi Mix is 6.4 inch screen 158.8mm tall and 81.9mm wide. Although the length it's about the same the difference in width makes the S8+ too skinny when you put them side by side.

I wonder if the difference in width is because the s8+ is .2 inches less of screen and has curved glass and not because of aspect ratio.

At any rate the s8+ is too skinny in comparison to the mix. I'd prefer the AMOLED screen of the s8+ though.

The Mi Max is 1920x1080 or 16:9.

I said Mi Mix not Mi Max. 2040:1080 which is 17:9.

Good call. My bad. I still don't think there's any significant between 18:9 & 17:9, but whatever floats your boat.

I love samsungs new 2:1 aspect ratio. It's perfect for split screen. Hope that becomes standard. With DJI making same aspect screen - who wants to bet iPhone is gonna have the same?

I am already sick of 18:9 screens maybe it's because I have big hands but I find them uncomfortable

Actually hope Sony doesn't go with this panel? It's time to go AMOLED if you wanna compete with the big boys.

XZ1 is going to be 16:9.
Same 5.2 in, but shorter than XZ.

This screen is probably for a chinese brand.

JDI isnt dping 18:9 because Samsung and LG did it. They all werw gonna do it anyways.

B3cause smartphones are getting bigger, but thw point is to increase display size, without increasing the phone size.

The 18:9 aspect ration will be common, as 4:3, 16:9/10 were.
