Is the Sony Xperia Z2 coming to Verizon as an exclusive?

Now that the new HTC One (M8) has been introduced and is available at Verizon, customers of the nation's largest carrier might soon have another high-end Android phone to consider. According to a report out of Japan, the Sony Xperia Z2 is heading to Verizon. The report states that the Sony D6508 (which is allegedly Verizon's version of the flagship model) had received Wi-Fi certification on March 3rd. The phone will support LTE/CDMA2000/WCDMA/GSM connectivity...

Maybe limitation in production is the main reason.

If you are Apple or Samsung, you can go to each of the major carriers and tell them: "I have this phone which will sell in millions. Do you want it or not?". Carriers cannot afford to reject a phone like the iphone or the lastest Galaxy flagship, so in this case is the manufacturer who has the power to decide. But if you're Sony or Motorola your position is extremely different: you go there and beg a carrier to distribute your products. Because you know that, without the carrirer's support, you would sell just a few thousand units. In this case, the carrier can tell you: "ok, I will distribute your phone, but I want to be the only one". So I think that it's not Sony's decision. They would certainly be happier if their phones were sold by all major carriers, but they simply cannot afford it right now.

I thought Sony wanted to double their handset sales. How are they going to do this by doing carrier exclusivity? They should release on at least 3 of the 4 major carriers, if not all 4.

Are you forgetting the Xperia line is exclusive to Tmobile one of teh worst providers. Putting a phone like this on the biggest carrier is not a bad thing for Sony at all, it's smart. Also i'm fairly certain it will be exclusive for a week much like HTC One and be available to everyone

Lies. AT&T never got the Xperia Z1. Pretty sure this phone is going to be exclusive to Verizon forever. And the next Z3 will probably be going back to T-Mobile, unless Verizon gets greedy and nabs the Z3 as their next exclusive. AT&T doesn't give a s___ though, they only care about Samsung and Apple.

This is pretty interesting, I have been waiting for the phone to come out now for some time on T-Mobile. If it really does come out on Verizon then I will for sure buy pending the development sources are made available ( Hint : Sony take Verizon out of the picture on that part like for GSM Sony Sources so Verizon doesn't mess that up like they did Xperia Play R800x ) ...

Carrier exclusivity was, is and will always be Sony's problem. You can't get anywhere by having your device on one carrier. They just don't learn.

Sadly though sometimes if you want to be on a certain carrier that carrier may demand some kind of exclusivity. All carriers do this at some point.

Well hopefully Sony will launch Z2 in all carriers so that they can boost their sales and let the whole world know that Z2 is one of the best phone this year.

Keep dreaming. Verizon owns the phone now and are jumping in joy and celebrating,. T-Mobile is crying in the river, AT&T doesn't care, and Sprint will never get a phone like this. And Sony is already happy that one of these carriers is claiming their phone, so why should they bother with the others?

I agree. I hate the actual releases being so far out past the announcement. Who the hell cares what you announce. If you can't get it soon after, it's too late to market and has missed the boat.

The second quarter technically starts next week, although I'm sure the actual release will probably be at the end of April/early May. My contract is up on the 20th of April so it works out perfect for me. Back in February 2012 when they announced the new droids, I had to wait 2 months before my upgrade, so for me I am glad there is a small gap between announcement and release.

So do you guys think it'll be exclusive on Verizon permanently? it's just strange because Sony has a close relationship with Tmobile from what i've read, and you'd think Sony would eventually release it on Tmobile. i think all phones should be released on all carriers, but business is business i guess.

Sony is greedy. They turned their backs on T-Mo because they later found out that, through Verizon's commercials on being "the largest 4G network" in the US, Sony decided to end their relationship with T-mo and sign an agreement with Verizon on selling the Z2. T-Mobile, poor old saps they are, are probably utterly, devastated at this decision. They will never sell a sony phone ever again. And Verizon are laughing their way to the bank.

i guess going to the largest US carrier makes sense. well looks like my only option now is to get the unlocked version..

I really like the looks of the Z2, but since they're not denying this rumor, I'll probably be picking up the M8 for T-Mobile in the 11th. If Sony makes a statement soon about what carriers they're using then I can wait, but if they can't communicate I'm not going to give them patience.
