Is Apple's war against Google hurting iOS?

0. phoneArena posted on 08 Aug 2012, 09:55

One of the first quotes from the biography of Steve Jobs to really catch fire was when he allegedly said that he would wage "thermonuclear war" on Google because of he perceived Android to be a copy of Apple's iOS...

Another horribly biased article and not surprised at all

let's see Siri is not a direct attack on Google. Apple creating a voice assistant was a great move as can be seen by every other OEM following suit and coming out with one. Siri while not perfect works really well most of the time. It's much better than anything else on the market right now. Not using google for its searches is a genius move by Apple as it hits google where it hurts without impacting the user experience whatsoever.

As far as maps Apple had to come up with a navigation solution since google doesn't share it's navigation with other OS's (what happened to open source?).

Only the most rabid android fanboy would care about this. YouTube works just fine on the web and google will still provide an app. Apple was paying licensing fees and the contract expired. Back when the OG iPhone came out YouTube was huge because no other phone had it. Now the majority of web video is HTML5 so it doesn't matter anymore.

Short answer is none. Google maps is still available as a web app and will be available in the app store so there's literally zero functionality lost. In addition now I have free built in navigation along with other cool features like 3d flyover view.

Your whole article screams fandroid. The average user won't even notice the difference and for those that enjoy google services they're still a free download away. Siri is the market leader in voice technology and will only pull further away while taking away page views from google. End result is Apple ecosystem gets stronger while google suffers.

Btw other companies like Facebook and Wikipedia are getting rid of google maps as well and using true open source mapping because of Google's anti competitive practices.

Siri is absolutely destroyed by Google Now, which is on the market. I have it on my SGS3, and use it to speak definitions of rude acts for my co-workers. Pretty soon, I'll just ignore it, as the whole idea is silly.

But in every test, Now is faster and more accurate than Siri, and sounds much more realistic. Which is because Google have been working on it for years, and didn't just buy an app, dumb it down, and throw it out as a buggy beta just so they could claim to be first.

I'm glad you enjoy it. I want everyone to enjoy it. But the fact is, Google Now is more advanced, faster, more accurate and more realistic than Siri, for the reasons I enumerated. Apple bought Siri because they knew about project Majel, and were only worried about being first to market so they could again claim others were copying. And it shows. Google Now functions more like the Siri we see in commercials than Siri ever does, except the voice doesn't sound robotic. You can find any number of videos on YouTube illustrating this.

BTW, Google has just announced updates for voice based search engine app on iOS, and it ditto works like the one on JellyBean.. So, Google is not only destroying the SIRI outside the iOS, but also within iOS.... And, see how impartially are they innovating stuff??? Google means Respect....

I don't claim iOS is a superior OS because it has flyover fandroids however use live wallpaper as some big differentiator.

Not huge. Just one of a thousand ways you have choices that you don't in iOS.

Oh please! I don't think any Fandroid says 'iOS sucks because it doesn't have LVP' There are more than one advantages of Android over iOS.
What you are wrong about is calling flyover cool but at the same time bashing widgets and LVP's.

i believe PA's writers are being very cautious with the articles they post... it's tons of interesting android news out there that's worth having a discussion about but we haven't seen them at all...

you almost have to be conscious to your audience... most people here are teen android users or people that dont give a care about apple products/business...

recent articles about apple are "obvious news" and isn't anything worth bragging about if you're on apple's side... that means the general audience we continue comment until their sarcastic/hateful hearts are content. lol

i wonder if they editors get paid depending on how many article clicks they get? or how popular the buzz they create in the comment section? hmmm???

i have no problem coming here reading positive android news or lame apple news like "new 9 pin charger" or "5 row of icons"...

its the new world order here Taco... just accept that most people that visit here dont give a damn about your apple-ish opinions...

PA has always been full of android trolls. It's because this website is dominated by people who work in the cell industry. For years only AT&T had the iPhone and other companies were taught to combat the iPhone. A lot of the posters here drank the cool aid and starting hating with without any first hand knowledge and continue to troll to this day.

a few years ago this site was dominated by pro-apple posters that "worked in the industry". And before that it was probably dominated by "Pro-RIM" posters..
Its called "changing with the times". Nothing more.. nothing less.

Actually it's because tech types are most likely to read a blog like this, and tech types are more likely to choose Android. Apple fans are more likely to gravitate to Apple centric sites, where they hear sharing voices backing up their views.

I donĀ“t really agree: in gsmarena you can post without login in the news, and the posts there are HORRIBLE. Some fanboys (both for Android and Apple) post several times the same stupid comments...
The Blog, where you have to actually log in to comment can be really compared, but the comments in gsmarena news are.. ugh!

1) You start by saying "Siri is not a direct attack on Google", and finish that same paragraph by saying "it hits Google where it hurts".

2) Not sure why Android fanboys would care at all about the user experience on an iOS device...

3) You can't make the claim that there hasn't been damage done, because the major pieces of Apple's change - Maps and YouTube - haven't been released. I'm simply asking whether or not it's possible that users will be upset about these changes. I can't imagine how it's not at least possible.

4) Your whole reading of my article, as always, screams Apple fanboy. What you don't seem to understand is that I'm not attacking anyone here. I'm pointing out what Apple is doing, and how it will effect the user experience, and asking whether or not users will be upset by it. As stated above, you can't argue that Apple isn't attacking Google, you can't argue that it is impossible for people to be upset, and you can't argue that there's no possibility for users to be upset.

I won't be responding any more to you on this post Taco. Have a good day.

I dont really understand why you wasted your time. Heck, I dont understand why I waste my own time replying to him. The article wasnt an attack on anything, it mere stated the current state of each piece mentioned and asked some basic "what will/might happen if" questions.

It was fair and concise.
If it were the same article but with android as a focus, he would have the polar opposite opinion. We all know that.

by saying is not a direct attack on Google is not.. but that move also hurts Google right where a search engine can be hurt.. again.. not a direct attack..it didn't need to

on the removal he is right only the fandroids will hat e on Apple while we Apple users applaud that idea of removing the you tube app..

so please what points is Taco wrong here Michael... the only thing is that you are not a fanboy.. you call it right in the middle ( we had this talk before) but taco's point are valid..

I never said that they weren't valid. The problem was that Taco's arguments were all from the perspective of bias. His arguments were in his misreading my article, because he is incorrectly convinced that I am biased, which I tried to point out. I knew that no one else would be as rational with Taco, so I wanted to be that voice rather than everyone else who will just call him an idiot.

Really, the person with the problem isnt the writer.. its you.
