Let's get something right here. LTE is a WCDMA technology. Where are you getting GSM from? It's a migration path yes, but LTE was chosen because it's an easy upgrade for current CDMA networks and GSM alike. This means that both CDMA service providers and GSM/WCDMA service providers will be able to evolve their networks to LTE–SAE. A LTE–SAE network is designed for efficient support of mass-market usage of any IP-based service. The architecture is based on an evolution of the existing GSM/WCDMA core network, with simplified operations for a smooth and cost-efficient deployment. Get your facts straight. 5 yrs ago there was 70million CDMA subscribers worldwide in 2003. Now there is 620+Million, in 2003, there was 2.71 Billion GSM, Which do you think is growing faster? GSM including WCDMA HSPA(GSM Migration) 3.04Billion. Increase by 11.2% for GSM. Increase in CDMA Market share 885%. Which doesn't matter because most technologies will go LTE, except for maybe Japan and Australia cause those countries are so stubborn. ****** My personal take is they will make a CDMA variant, and Sprint and Verizon will be opening up there network. And does not follow under the terms and conditions of one provider to sell it. Sprint and Verizon I think won't sell it. They will just have an open network and Apple will make a CDMA version to be unlocked for any CDMA network. No contract broken. -Mentioned above, Nobody knows how long the contract is with apple. I've heard from 2yrs to 5. Nobody is sure. It's not public record. Even if it's 5yrs, there is still. 3.7yrs left, if it's 3yrs, which I'm assumming it is. Would put the phone open right around (couple months prior) the time Verizon is launching there LTE network, and dead on the time Vodaphone is launching there's. Which is scheduled for May/June 2010. The exclusive for the storm is only 18mos from what I've heard. That was because of the year exclusive on the pearl, and 6mo exclusive on the curve in exchange for Verizon to get the Storm for 18mos. Which is also funny, because like i mentioned above, that's the same time LTE on Vodaphone and Verizon should be rolling out as well. 18mos will put it march/april'ish 2010. Just a month before Vodaphone LTE scheduled launch. Co-ink-e-dink. I think not. That's my opinion/ .02cents (sorry for grammar or miss-spells, it's late for me)

really good info but totally wasted on this board imo. People on here generally want to bash other phone companies and say how good their's is, not learn anything. One thing I would say about the growth of gsm/wcdma is that market saturation is probably most likely to blame for the discrepency in new customers. When almost everyone in a viable market already has cellphone service you run out of new customers.

WCDMA isn't CDMA. They aren't compatible. The only thing they share, loosely, is an air interface. LTE was chosen as a 4G tech for GSM networks, UMB was supposed to be the 4G tech for CDMA but no CDMA carriers commited to it because they know that the world is dominated by the GSM family and chose LTE. Now that CDMA carriers are commiting to LTE, companies like Qualcomm are making it easier to upgrade from CDMA to LTE. Oh and 620 million is a lot compared to close to 3 billion for GSM? Where'd you learn to count? College Algebra 1? You want to know why it's shot up so much? China. Cell phones are more affordable there then 5 years ago. But of course, CDMA is dying there too (along with GSM to a lesser extent) because of new technologies like TD-SCDMA, which don't require the operators to pay licensing fees to Qualcomm like they do with their CDMA networks.

thats about the smartest post ive seen on the subject in a while VERIZON will not sell the Iphone. But, they dont have to. When Verizon opens their networks up to "any app any CDMA phone" that can pass certification, all Apple has to do is make a CDMA version and pass it. What kind of idiotic company wouldnt make a version of the phone that opens it up to 100 million ++ possible new customers? I would shutter to think of some of these idiots ever running something. The world is moving to LTE, a NOKIA/VODAPHONE-VERIZON developed technology. That is why vodaphone/verizon will have it first. Apple is slated to be about 3 yrs behind the curve on the ability to RENT the tech from vodaphone. If you think AT&T has a chance at world take over, think again. They will be paying royalties to their competition, just for the benifit of keeping up with their competition. Verizon bought Alltell because it saves us over 1 billion a year in back end roaming agreement fees through the south east. How much do you think we will make off of other carriers when LTE becomes standard? As far as the Storm goes. I have not heard anything that suggests a 18month window. My understanding is its 100% exclusive in the USA to verizon. that doesnt mean i wont appear around the world, as we know it will. Then again, if it is 18 months, who cares, because in 18 months, it will be obsolete, just like the Iphone.

....and one other note... LTE is "backwards compatible" with CDMA too.

the above comment is 100% correct. i, too, though LTE was GSM.BUt if you guys do extensive research it is just WCDMA. LTE for verizon would only mean other phones from other carriers (ex. Sprint) would be able to work. Please don't get confused.

I admit, iPhone is a good phone and has good marketing/brand loyality with high priced/less featured products, but Verizon has good marketing/brand loyality too reguardless of the standard UI that is found on dumbphones, the locked GPS on PDA's and missing Bluetooth profiles. If Verizon gets an iPhone (finally) then I hope they enable MMS and video capabilities.

plzzzzzzzzzzz aplle come to VZW with Iphone. i need that right now.

i highly doubt verizon will get the iphone. the only reason they're getting the storm is so they could have a competitor against the iphone since the dare couldnt. maybe apple will produce a new phone thats NOT the iphone. or maybe they r getting the iphone but engadget is saying its gunna have windows mobile. http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/09/29/verizon-getting-a-cdma-iphone-that-runs-windows-mobile-cle ars-a/ but no matter wat they get out now, the tmobile G1 will own. not necessarily by looks but by functionality.

I have had Verizon for years, and could care less if the iPhone comes on the network. The phone is huge, text messaging is a hassle, and its buggy. Not only that, pix and video messaging is weird on it. At&t and keep the iPhone, and pay Apple through the nose for it. All hype.

you guys know Apple knocked on verizons door first and got turned down, I think there is a market for this product and apple is smart to offer it to verizon and sprint, I have played with the phone it seems nice personally I don't get why everyone thinks is is sooo gaga over it. but I have a vista computer that works great and have been useing windows CE for about ten years I first had a Casio Cassiopeia A-10 when some of my friends had a apple newton. honestly I think they need to do this for market share most of the people who live in USA use cdma I think its about 2 to 1 cdma to GSM here. Also I was thinking this could be a device that would work well with Verizons open device initiate maybe you wont ever see this in a Verizon store apple might sell it directly to the public

I'm all for the iPhone coming to Verizon. Just imagine the iPhone on the most reliable network. But one thing I worry about...and its not the crippling part! ....but I just hope they don't put that stupid Verizon UI on it. Did you hear me Verizon...I HATE YOUR COMMON UI!!! But I love the network so I'm staying either way. If they put a Verizon UI on it I'm not getting it. I can just get a basic phone with the same software.

26. unregistered

Apple wouldn't allow them to touch the software on the phone. Probably part of why Verizon said no when Apple asked them the first time.

the verizon UI only goes on the dumbphones. no smartphones have verizon UIs on them, and as is with the dare and voyager(version9) the UI is changing for the high end dumb phones.

One of the reasons I heard that VZW turned down the iphone was because only corporate stores and the apple store could sell it. VZW wanted to open sales up to indirect locations, and as an indirect rep I appreciate any loyalty that VZW wants to give us. I'll be happy to get the iphone for VZW if I can sell it, activate it, and service it.

If they actually make the iPhone for Verizon too, they would get like triple the profits.

somebody is going down in 09... hey AT&T is it you?... what are you going to do? acquire CDMA network?

30. Midnight unregistered

I think the iPhone sucks right now. I wouldnt want the current version on Verizon Wireless because the issues would make our network look bad. however it would be cool to steal the exclusivity agreement away from at&t and just watch their customers port over :)

31. unregistered

AT&T exclusivity was for 2 years...Once this comes to Verizon, sit back and watch how many people will switch from Att to Verizon. I have it on att and the phone is great but the network blows.

32. unregistered

Verizon wourld cripple the GPS....

34. Big Moe unregistered

And so it begins... It's funny. Verizon customers don't hate the iPhone. Verizon customers feel that your phone is only as good as the network it's on. For instance, if you took a BB Curve from all available carriers, and tested them all in the same area, at the same time, Verizon Wireless will have the BEST and MOST RELIABLE service, consistently. Therefore, iPhone on At&t or iPhone on Verizon Wireless? It's should be no-brainer but then again, there will be those "fanboys" who won't take back what they said on previous posts and admit that Verizon Wireless truly is at the top. In the words of a very knowledgeable and reliable source, "If you build it, they will come!" HAHA! Again, too funny! GO VZW!

35. unregistered

IF the iPhone were to make its way to Verizon Wireless Verizon would have a laundry list of demands before they would accept the device on their network. one of the main reasons they told apple no was because they wanted total control over tech support for the device. if the iPhone came to verizon they would want their people be able to troubleshoot and replace the device as they see fit. another thing that im sure verizon would want would be their vz navigator service on there. im pretty sure they would want the device to be capable to doing mms messaging too. why have that kinda device if it cant preform some of the most basic functions.

57. unregistered

VZW is supossedly opening their network soon...any device any app. When/if this is the case they actually won't have many demands...it'll be up to the device manufacturer to deal with hardware problems. VZW will of course offer their own phones that they will manage

41. unregistered

i think the only phone i might consider getting over the iphone as far as touch screens go is the htc diamond if that does come to verizon....even still i think i'd still lean towards the iphone, the good thing is at&t is almost acting as the guinea pig and hopefully apple can work most of the kicks out and then vzw gets the phone....and then global domination can start and vzw can take over the world.

58. unregistered

Yea hopefully they can fix their 3g chip. I heard it's causing alot of droopped calls. Let ATT be the test dummy lol

42. unregistered

if this happens i'll die and go to heaven.

43. unregistered

i dont think verizon would cripple this phone. they allow blackberry to have their own interface, and the same with windows mobile devices. i do agree that they would want vznav integrated somehow, but i think thats about it. it would be pointless to release it to vzw with the vzw UI. you can just buy the dare in that case. apple just rules the touch screen world right now in my opinion, and thats why this appeals to me.
