Apple could end up buying 5G modem chips from a very unlikely source

Apple has questioned whether it will receive Intel's 5G modem chip in time for it to deliver 5G iPhones next year. Just in case Intel can't make the deadline, Huawei is said to be "open" to selling its homegrown 5G modem chips to Cupertino.

Intel's modems do suck. What's interesting is that Intel isnt rushing to get their modems to market - I don't think Apple is anywhere up hight on their to-do list..

Problem for Apple is that for Intel modems aren't their core business, it's a little side project and one they considered cancelling last year, because they couldn't keep up and it cost too much money. According to Qualcomm Apple tried to get access to the internal workings of their modems chips to give to Intel to allow them to catch up to Qualcomm modem performance.

I'm not even sure Intel is making any money out of this deal with Apple.

They aren't! In fact, Intel has stated they won't make any profit on the modem they sold to Apple. But it's OK, because Intel makes it cash from grossly overpricing their CPU's to OEM and consumers.

I hope apple does the stupid and uses the Huawei gear. RIP Apple..

That's a smart move to me if apple considers huawei as its chips supplier. Let customers decide which company has better and faster technology. Words from your mouth doesn't make any sense, but it's just a complain.

Its got nothing to do with complain. Unfortunatley for Huawei, they've backed themselves into a corner over their involvement with the Chinese Government. I don't doubt Huawei produce good quality gear - but they've got skeletons in their closet now... They really need to gain consumer confidence - and if Apple used their modems, Apple will surely lose with their customer base...

Think smart - Samsung does. They can make everything that goes into their handsets inhouse... Apple on the other hand. Well you make that bed and have to sleep in it when you're at the mercy of suppliers.. Tough lovin bwahahahahahahahahahaha

Nah, don't get me wrong, i won't forget the battery recall. If you really think smart, please think about your physical safety first.

You dont need toforget about it millions of poeple already have, hence why the S10 series are selling really welll. I guess good phones make people forget the battery recall just not you.

It was never an issue. 62 phones out of 5M actually caught fire. Yet every iPhone ever produced has cheap batteries that die even when they have 20% power left in them. yea, who's battery is really the issue.

I dont think anyone will forget the battery recall. Aside from the fact that it affected such a small number of handsets, Samsung has one of the toughest battery testing facilities in the world now - so I'm pretty sure we can put this one to bed and forget about it. It was a good wake up to them - and they did the right thing by having the recall and improving their battery manufacturing.

Samsung doesn’t make their own operating system and needs google At least Apple makes their own operating system for everything their make And Samsung only manufacturers the iPhone screens, they are still designed by Apple themselves, that’s why Apple owns the patent for the curved bottom edge of screen that folds back inside to give it the smallest bottom bezel on a smartphone

samsung already did make their own operating system called tizen. it flopped due to losing access to google playstore which is why it flopped. the operating system is now on smart watches and the phone operating system will probably be scrapped.

Not really Samsung make Apple displays, RAM and the storage for iphones, and they used to make batteries for them a few years ago too.

Apple needs to speak up and get Tim Cook out of there. Now is the time for them to expand and start creating their own components in house. They have the money and resources to make it happen but won't with someone like Cook leading the charge

In the end, they will just call qualcomm and use their 5G chips then in years to come they will produce their own chip and let tsmc manufacture it.

Qualcomm doesn't want to supply their 5G to Apple, at least until all disputes are resolved.

“That's because the law in China requires a company like Huawei to gather intelligence if requested to do so.” Anyone else catch this...? Calling the kettle black. It’s a problem, yet Apple, was supposed to supply the US government a back door to any iPhone in the world...?? I’m all for keeping Huawei out of my country because of this, but they need to stop having issues with Apple advocating for privacy.

Huawei providing modems for iPhones? Just introducing a third-party to the spying-for-political-retribution game... Republicans and Democrats, both via whatever their few political hacks at the NSA can grab for them, in spite of the law, and then the Communist Party of China.

One must be crazy to think Apple is not getting its modems. In the end, even Samsung will prefer to buy cheap MediaTek modems for its low and mid phones just to build and sell to Apple more expensive modems. The businesses work on profits and not irațional feelings.

Except the problem according to Samsung is that they can only produce enough 5G modems to use in their own high-end devices. Low and mid-range phones likely won't even see 5G modems next year, at best the absolute upper mid-range models perhaps and those don't necessarily have to be Samsung modems. So if Samsung doesn't have the supply to share, Apple is out of luck. And for Apple to use Huawei modems, you'll see the iPhone banned for use by government officials, which Apple won't want either. Which basically leaves Qualcomm and Apple getting on its knees before them.

You forgot about Intel? Even MediaTek can build modems, if Apple loans it some engineers.

That would be hilarious! US government banning 5G Huawei tech, but top US company using Huawei 5G modems.

if Apple did a deal with Huawei . trump wouldn't say a frikkin thing. The whole move against Huawei is because they already have 5G and the US options for it, are far behind. Intel and other US companies are crying because they are not as advanced and fast moving as China. They are just trying to block China. As you can see, the tariff's on goods coming into China, has not been taxed on Apple products as of yet. But other goods already have the tariff imposed on them. This is likely what Trump and Cook talked about. Cook is probably paying trump under the table for favor. The US Gov't has shown ZERO proof that Huawei has ever spied on anyone. It's a political motivated stunt. In the 10 years the US has claimed to investigated Huawei , they have found or shown zero evidence of spying. This coming from a country who spies on everyone. Such hypocrites. Just like fans tend to be.

Problem with Apple is they provide huge burst of income short term but long term relying on one big customer is risky. Look at what happened to imagination tech. So Samsung would not bother investing money to provide Short term volume for Apple. Apple needs to bite the bullet and go with Qualcomm or wait until they have one made internally. They are between the rock and hard place in this situation.

The only rock in that hard place for Apple is their ego, legal team and poor company practices..
