Google announces Android Ice Cream Sandwich and Honeycomb 3.1, promises timely updates

Ice Cream Sandwich was called Google's "most ambitious release to date", and the aim is for it to power tablets, convertible tablets, and, of course, phones. Honeycomb 3.1 gets USB host functions and new widgets, but the big news is the updates are going to be timely from now on...

App stores existed, now the way app stores work now is completely different fom the way they used to work thats what has being changed. I remember back when I had my P910 and my P990 there where app stores, the differences is that those where places for devs to promote their apps while they hosted them on their own servers(except for free apps), so the 'appstore' was a trusted site where both devs and customers could use to intercommunicate thus the concept was born, companies like Sony Ericsson also had their wap stores where they offered ringtones, wallpapers, applications and games. now apple popularized a way by making it more comfortable for developers since they don't need hosting or promotion or an expensive fee to do so or sell their apps to a company now the issue with you comparing cydia is that you are comparing it against stock android, now if we where comparing Cydia and cyanogenmod then will be comparing it an ill be cool, now they are both not related with how iOS or android innovate because they are completely isolated proyects, now you don't open a brand new iPhone or android phone with a manual on how to install cydia or cyanogenmod do you?

yes, but cyanogenmod is a process that voids ur warranty and is a bit complicated... cydia is one click of an install and ur done... and its 100 percent irreversible

cyanogen mode is reversible, and both having cydia and cyanogen void your warranty go with an friend messed up her iPhone (update with cydia on turned into a brick ) and she had to pay someone else because the apple store wont touch her phone becuse it had cydia

And if I'm reading this right, even my X will be eligible for ice cream and possibly another update beyond!

probably not, this referendum probably only applies for phones released in the future, if your phone gets further updates, its at the mercy of verizon and motorola, Google wont intervene.

Man I wish I had to hack and jailbreak my Droid X just so I could get a wallpaper on it. LOL How long did it take IOS to allow you JUST to put a stupid wallpaper up? Oh and how's it like to watch a youtube video and getting a stupid annoying text message saying "SUP?" to completely stop your video? DEAL with it, the iphone is just a very expensive feature phone. lol and for the most part very basic feature phones had more features than the iphone offered.

I have to agree with some of what hellopeople posted...the app quality on iOS is a little more quality even though still with the same amount of pointless apps. For example, Fruit Ninja on iOS vs. Fruit Slice on Android is no comparison. The iOS version is a lot more fluid than the Android version. Android seems to have knock off apps that are choppy in performance. Not all, but most. But then again on iOS you are paying for most of the relevant ones so they better be good quality. I don't know about the "APPLE FOREVVA!" comment tho, you're on your own with that one little buddy.

listen iphone fans iphone will be outdated after 5 to 6 years as google and microsoft will be in the competion iphone just releases just one type of model every year but google more than 100s also android will be always top as they are the first to release dual core processors remember lg optimus 2x also they are going to realease nexus 3 with quad core processors amazing to see that iphone realeasing dual core in q4 that means android will be always one step better than iphone

well what if one doesn't care about a quad core processor...then is all of that really relevant? better is always dependent on who you are dealing with. iOS can never be outdated b/c it has too many connections to personal entertainment & business functions. You don't have to have 17MP camera 10000GB of memory & 16 diff. processors in a phone for it to be good. Android believes in the latest hardware trends where as Apple seems to focus on a intuitive software experience. Its the diff. in companies goals.

Why does it take 1 complete year to release next version. For smart phones there was not even a single release after ginderbread.

I am waiting for the Android release called "Edible Underwear" myself. Ice Cream Sandwich is so next year.
