Google announces Android Ice Cream Sandwich and Honeycomb 3.1, promises timely updates

Ice Cream Sandwich was called Google's "most ambitious release to date", and the aim is for it to power tablets, convertible tablets, and, of course, phones. Honeycomb 3.1 gets USB host functions and new widgets, but the big news is the updates are going to be timely from now on...

wow i totally lost what was being said... sorry... too many people... and anyways the app store was an innovation from apple... google copied that as well... just saying but i think it would be better to have this discussion once ios and ice cream sandwich come out... then they will both be fresh and better to compare... cause right now we r comparing one phone and an old os to gingerbread... and apparently i am not allowed to even argue with cydia... but whatever... it just seems to me like cydia is part of the iphone... just like roms are part of android... but whatever id say 95% of people who say iphone sucks have never had one... hahahaha thats like saying i hate ferraris cause i can only get a toyota... omg my toyota is better then ur ferrari cause it has better gas mileage... nice argument huh?

No, no, no, Lucas. Let's start from the top: Our arguments about Android's innovations and good features relate to stock Android. We weren't discussing any custom ROMs. You had to resort to discussing jailbroken iPhones in order to match the features we named. Jobs and Apple tried to get jailbreaking named as a FELONY OFFENSE under the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, but were bitchslapped down by the federal government, who for once did a good job. Yes, it will be better to compare iOS 5 and Ice Cream Sandwich and future versions of Android. However, the very fact that the current version of iOS is stuck in 2007 speaks for itself. Many of us aren't saying that the iPhone is a complete ball of suckage. And your Toyota analogy fails because the high end Android phones cost about the same as an iPhone. So here's a better comparison: "You know, Ferraris are cool, but they all look the same. I think I'll take the Ford GT. It goes just as fast as a Ferrari, it's sexy like a Ferrari, and it handles as nice as a Ferrari. It's also about as reliable, if not more so, than a Ferrari. It just isn't nearly as pretentious as a Ferrari. Yeah, the Ford GT is the car for me."

okay sniggly, lets just get this straight first of all-- the ford gt is nice, but its not the best by any means... the lfa is way better... even lotus makes better cars for that money...

and also yes, adnroid looks better on paper... it has this that and the other... but when u actialy use both phones (which i doubt almost nobody who comments have) it is the quality and thoughtfulness of ios that makes it... like swipe to delete? one of the best features... and ya, cydia is a part of the iphone... for anyone who knows at all what they r doing... it is not illegal or anything and it doesnt void ur warranty... and yes, the app store on the iphone is a huge part of what makes it... if android gets the same app store (which it probabyl never will unless they really unify the os) the two products will just never be the same... here is a better car analogy-- land rovers (they are sexy look great on paper do this and that but in real life they suck) now look at a lexus lx.. it does same thing as the land rovver and some unique things that are actually useful, and it isnt built like crap...

I know nothing about cars, so when you talk cars I'm actually lost, apps will become the same with given time, it works like that. Now I ask you have you really used and Hight end android phone? I personally had an iPhone (not 4) before but I currently prefer android, few of my friends have android and iPhone's and BB's that i get to play with from time to time and they are pretty nice(except for BB's I hate them), I love to tell the phone to set my alarm to a time by just pressing the search button on my main screen or calling places I don have as my contacts by just saying the name (No more pizza numbers in my phone!) or sending a text message or and email to a friend without even touching the gmail icon, I love that my phone learns the way I talk and is really accurate, and if i press on a word it got wrong (when sending a message) I see all the other optional words so I don't have to retype

yes, i had a captivate for about three months... it was nice, but coming from an iphone it was not nearly the same... and i suppose for me the iphone is just better... its not that i dont acknowledge the power of android, because yes it is powerful, but its features, at least for me, just dont seem to be as important as the ones on the iphone... i never ever used voice commands becuase i find it irritating to talk to my phone and it is quicker to just press the screen... but if u like it, great... i much prefer the swipe to delete, and the little x that deletes apps becuase that was such a pain with android... i also dont like having that homescreens cause all you do is launch apps anyways.. it is too redundant.. and no, i dont believe the marketplace will ever reach the quality of the app store... yes it will reach numbers but in quality it just will never be there... and that is a fundemental problem with android... it cant be changed... its just a fact. i also dont like how a better phone come out every week... its like u buy one from craigslist and then there is a new one.. and for me, since i resell my phones, i think the retail value of the iphone 4 is a huge plus... also, i really wish android got a weather app... that bugged the crap out of me... the weather chanel and other stuff was just to much.. i like the simplicity of the ios one... but yes, i understnad how android has power, i just dont think it is refined...

I liked the weather widget I had on blur, and and there are quite few widgets that I found useful when it comes to weather forecast, is another thing i like about android when you don't like the home app you can just simply get a new one, sometimes you like the aspects of a phone but you want a much more useful experience, you can simply get ADW or LauncherPro or even GoLauncher and they offer features like uninstalling from the launcher or their own task manager, if you don't like that multi tasking only shows the last 6 apps used you can get a task manager that shows them all in a fancy way, or you can get a keyboard that uses gestures to delete words (I like selecting a word and typing over it) now did you see the IO? I have to say i follow quite a few devs on twitter and there became more interested in making their apps more competitive because they liked the protection , you feel like android will never catch up in quality of apps, but the quality its already being improved, check the history of applications like flow and you will see how polished they have become, its just a matter of time, but time only may prove me wrong, you should try and keep an android phone just to see how things change and to me in the en people will choose their phones as a matter of preference, because of the way they feel

if you want to talk about hacking being a part of iOS then we could say the same for Android. there's all kinds of launchers and ROMS that make Android much better on top of the features it comes with out of the box. i've used many of Apple's products and many different Android devices and Apple's iPhone is defiantly a buttery smooth experience but at the rate of progress Android is going Android will overtake iOS in no time. want another car analogy? iOS = 691 hp Lamborghini Aventador and Android = a 1,001 hp Bugatti Veyron with both keys Gingerbread & Honeycomb (about to be Ice Cream Sandwich) in the ignition going top speed with the Lambo having a half mile head start, who's gonna win?

nononononnononoonononon that is the worst analogy ever... basically u r saying android is an overpriced french superphone with only one model... u have it backwards stupid... and u dont need to tell me its a coupe and a convertible... and anyways u know horsepower isnt the best way to grade cars right? and i am not dissing bugatti, they r my french car idols, but really? look up ur analogy before u try and sound smart with cars...

um..i think you over analyzed my analogy there guy.

well it really pisses me off when people missuse car talk.. at least get the right cars to compare

i haven't "misused" car talk. to the extent of what i'm trying to get across to you the analogy i came up with is accurate. that's the thing about most people that comment here, they always think they have superior knowledge in every aspect.

including u... and no.... maybe u shudnt use car analogies if u cant make the right one... and i think u are being hypocritical by saying android will always do this and that and iphone sucks here and there... i am not into iphones that much, i dont have on eiright now, but i do think it is wrong to give it no credit for what it has done and does... in many ways it sets the bar and to argue that u think u have superior knowledge... u really need to think stuff through before u say it

i don't care to admit you might know more about cars than me, i stay a little bit in the know about cars because it's my family business but my knowledge is in fact limited, you obviously care more for them than i do. i didn't say iOS sucks, Apple has made a fine smartphone accepted by millions. my argument is that Android is becoming the better platform. the truth is in the facts and i don't think i have superior knowledge than anybody here until they come at me or any of the other people here with no evidence of knowledge or intelligence, like you being as stubborn as a mule.

86. Lucas777

i dont see android becoming the better platform... i see it and ios always maintaing the balance they have becuase they each get whatever features the other gets... it will always be like that since both oses are as far as userinterfaces go, very similar... even as phones they are set up extremely similar... not like webos or wp7... i think ios will always be the premier phone to have but android will always control the market... the wild card is wp7... if it does well it will eat android and rim not iphone... and i wish android made money for google becuase just think if facebook made a search, google would be a dead company... and android wud be gone...

that's all speculation, in reality the fact is that Android surpassing of Apple is at hand. you see the news of Android's growth and the delay of the iPhone 5 kind of solidified it because by that time there will be a few more finer selections of dual-core Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy SII and more LTE phones like the Droid Bionic (not those half baked things that are out now) and then Apple will be the ones playing catch up.

91. Lucas777

not true at all... nobody has even caught up to apple's retina display, and their ip4 is still one of the best selling phones a year after it come out... how many android devices can say that? and the iphone 5 is delayed partly becuase their ip4 did so well... and lte is overrated right now becuase verizon charges a crappload for it... and android wont use dual core sompletely until ice cream... and anyways lets be honest, there are enough people who will by the ip5 that it will be a better succes than any other phone... i myself will buy one and then prompltly put it on ebay and make myself a nice 600 dollars

93. Thump3rDX17

the Retina display IS overtated. it's very nice but qHD displays are enough to tilt the favor back to Android especially with options like Super AMOLED + so has the Droid X and the EVO 4G each with their own strengths and the EVO 4G went directly against the iPhone 4 and beat it in some cases. Verizon doesn't charge any extra for 4G LTE, the devices cost more because the LTE radios are still expensive and the manufactures still need to make a profit and if i have to pay an extra $50 to have a phone that's 3-4 times faster on average than a 3G phone for 2 years then so be it. Ice Cream Sandwich comes out at the end of Summer and when Google says that they mean the first device preloaded with Ice Cream Sandwich will be out at that time. the iPhone 5 will be announced in September i believe making it a step behind by the arrival of Ice Cream Sandwich.

i cant believe u just called android a bugatti.. what a disgrace to the veyron... and im sure u probably think mercedes are all the shit too huh? welll ya they r if u wanna pay double for everything! and really, lambourghinis are of course very nice and this and that but u r paying for the symbol not the car as much... look at the r8... even the corvette... those are some beast cars just a little over 100,000... and look at the lfa! that thing is freakin amazing!!!!!!!! oh and by the way, with 12 miles per gallon on that veyron, the lambourghini wud win... just saying... next time look up ur cars before u say that... it bugs me so much when people just throw car names around and have no clue what they r talking about

maybe you shouldn't get so bent out of shape about the examples of cars that i chose and try to understand what i'm saying. in the long road Android is the obvious winner.

80. Lucas777

obviously not... i dont see ios going anywhere... obviously android will have more market share but no phone will ever have more than the iphone... and u r just cant admit u got owned with ur car analogy... haha

82. Thump3rDX17

Posts: 2160; Member since: May 10, 2010

i don't care about the analogy. you're not paying attention to what i want you to pay attention to. maybe i can simply it enough for you without cars, Android moving FASTER than iOS. Android embraces innovation better than Apple.

84. Lucas777

Posts: 2137; Member since: Jan 06, 2011

no they do not... they just have more people... i dont see more innovation from them at all that th eopposite side doesnt have... android and ios are so close right now it is wierd... thats why i like wp7... they dont copy no one... oh and u definately r trying to change the subject on cars cause u cant win at that... aahahahahhaha

remember NFC and Adobe Flash? how about experimental form factors? Apple has made strides in the past like with the recent iPod Nano, that was impressive and i realize Android is merely the platform behind other manufactures products but any one of them has demonstrated they want to make big pushes in their development to make Android a better platform for their devices, that's because there are so many other competitors using the very same platforms making pushes equally as big. i like WP7 too, i was close to switching to them but they haven't demonstrated their rate of progress as quickly as i'd like yet.

88. Lucas777

flash is just so overrated its ridiculous... personally all the things i wud use flash for i wud rather use a larger screen for... and dont doubt the power of wp7... it is quite an interesting os... u shud try it... it is amazingly connected, kinda wierd actually at times... but that is part of androids problem as well, google is making all this android for nothing... it is costing them so much money, i just dont see them bein able to do that forever

90. Thump3rDX17

Posts: 2160; Member since: May 10, 2010

Flash is a good thing to have just like having a matured app store is a good thing to have. i personally prefer to have Flash because i watch a lot of stuff online and it's especially nice to have on Tablets, right now i think the Playbook's Browser is nicer than Honeycombs but both is better than Safari in very important aspects evenif it is the smoothest out of them all. i've tried WP7 it's an issue of quality vs. quantity when it comes to Android and in the long run Android will become as nice as WP7 and soon at the rate Microsoft is going.

92. Lucas777

Posts: 2137; Member since: Jan 06, 2011

microsoft is doing a fine job in my opinion... and the playbook is by far better than honeycomb, and anyways who really uses safari on the ipad... there are such better web browsers that have flash

94. Thump3rDX17

Posts: 2160; Member since: May 10, 2010

the Playbook is a very nice Tablet but Honeycomb has a better presentation and a bigger demographic of apps while still applying the Playbook's strengths in some form or another. i don't know what people use on their iPad but out of the box that's what you have. Safari.
