Gaming-friendly Asus ROG Phone has 4 and 6GB RAM variants in the works
In addition to their arguably original, bold, and trend-defying designs, the gaming-focused Razer Phone and Asus ROG Phone have another important thing in common. We’re talking about a whole lot of memory, handling your most onerous multitasking needs with relative ease.

But is it possible for a high-end gaming smartphone to adequately do its job with any less than 8GB RAM? Xiaomi certainly seems to think so, backing both 6 and 8 gig variants of the China-exclusive Black Shark handset, while Asus might have slightly humbler and cheaper ROG Phone configurations of its own in the pipeline.

A (not so) mysterious Z01QD device was recently certified by China’s FCC-similar Tenaa agency, running Android 8.1 Oreo, packing a 2.95 GHz processor that can only be Qualcomm’s overclocked Snapdragon 845, as well as offering 4, 6, and 8GB RAM options.

A trio of product images accompanying the certification info confirms the handset’s identity beyond a shadow of a doubt, and in fact, if you take a look at the official Asus ROG Phone webpage, you can find “up to LPDDR4X 8GB RAM” listed in the tech specs section.

That suggests it was the company’s plan all along to release lower-memory models, even though the “standard” 8 gig version itself has yet to see daylight stateside. There are still no words on US pricing either, but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize this is going to be one very expensive phone.

Hopefully, those 4 and 6GB RAM configurations will not be made available exclusively in China, and somehow, they’ll achieve a decent balance between affordability and silky smooth performance as well.
