Galaxy S5 scores amazing on our battery life test: the longest-lasting flagship has the endurance of a tablet

0. phoneArena posted on 12 Apr 2014, 08:40

Are you sitting down? You'd better be, as we have a new king of our battery life test, and it is none other than Samsung's Galaxy S5. It managed the whopping 8 hours and 14 minutes of screen-on time in our grueling battery endurance run, which is the best result we've seen so far from any flagship...

Well can other flagship sony devices even touch the endurance of Samsung? I think not.

Die hard sammy haters. I love how you haters and fanboys act. In lg g2 and htc m8 review you guys believed phonearena testing method. But when now s5 kicked ass of both suddenly this method become irrelevant

Xperia C is a beast tho.

Naah, i believe GSMArena's more. No doubt that it's good, but the title is exaggerated.

not exaggerated. xperia c is not a flagship.

Grain of salt taken, actually i think they embellished all of these. My G2 after months holds usually 6hrs on screen time, 6 and a half usually and thats a span of 2 days. However, i would say when i got the phone it was most certainly over 7hrs. M8 being over the G2 is hard to believe, but i guess that processor is the real deal the 801. I doubt the S5 will retain 8hrs if it even gets that. Also note, the usage varies. No one sits on their phone draining the battery that much unless you are at home. 8 and a half hours translates to 2 - 3 days of moderate use. Facebook / pictures / videos / music stream. On any phone, if you sit there and game on it, it will die in like 10 + hours for the first few months anyway

Sony, do not screw this up. If the Z2 doesn't get 7 hours MINIMUM, it'll spoil the momentum for 2014 flagships.

Without that algorithm, I doubt Sony can do that with a Snapdragon 800 series chipset and FHD screen. Well, we'll see what Sony does with the Z2. Bad start with the overheating and gaps.

that algorithm designed for benchmarks? go to anandtech for a detailed review. the z1 performs better compared to the script-run tests done here. not the best but way better than how it is being depicted on sites like this.

This phone has killed M8 in every aspect.
Now we can say that the only competetor ro S5 is Z2, waiting for the results.

I would still take M8 for Sense and design/feel. I also prefer LCD to AMOLED

What does this "feel" thing that you mention do? Do you rub it against your skin and it relieves stress? If so, why did HTC release 3 x plastic cases alongside the M8? If "premium" aluminum is magical, I'll do the opposite. I'll pay $15 for a slimTPU case with an aluminum shell and my "feel" problem is solved. Or just get a Coke from the vending machine and hold it close.

You forgot to say "in my opinion". Phones nowadays are all about personal preferences.

When we are talking about facts, there is no need for "in my opinion".
If you open your eyes you will see that exept for design, S5 is better than M8 in every aspects.

One that that I find very disappointing about Samsung is that they don't put much effort into providing high quality headphone output on their phones. On a few of their phones, the ones without Qualcomm chips, they offer a Wolfson DAC that is pretty good.

On the majority of their phones, with the Qualcomm chips, Samsung uses the Qualcomm DAC that is part of the Qualcomm CPU which offers good specs, but poor real world performance. The HTC One M7/M8 and Apple iPhones in particular are much better for headphone audio than most Samsung phones. To get good headphone quality with a Samsung phone, you will often have to carry around a separate battery powered headphone amp.

While I think plastic is fine for phone bodies -- lower radiation and better reception -- being cheap and lazy about audio quality is disappointing, especially in a "flagship" phone.

I don't understand what's wrong with my phone then. Just received my S5 yesterday and am experiencing terrible battery life. On a full charge it will be at 80% within two hours...on idle! I had to recharge it twice yesterday. Just came from an Evo 4G LTE and I am running basically the same apps and settings. I'll give it a few days and see what happens. I'm sure I'll have to wait to see if others are experiencing this problem.

Let it finish syncing up an settle in a bit,
(Couple three days) then judge it further.
Media is usual suspect, syncing up I mean.

true just use the right kernel with a rooted s5 and change the settings to power save, where you will get 25% more battery than standard
