Galaxy S5 (Digital Stabilization) vs LG G2 (Optical Image Stabilization): video comparison

A little over a week ago, we had quite a few of our readers nodding their heads in approval when the topic of the relative usefulness of Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) in smartphone cameras was raised, and we've definitely been having a kick out of testing the feature. Whether its in a vacuum, or against rivals with or without OIS, the extra has definitely grown on some of us. As it turns out, digging helps, as today we finally have our first upset and exception in the Samsung Galaxy S5...

Leave it, PhoneArena is Samsung lovers, they are paid to advertise how good Samsung phones are and they try to be like non-biased on surface (they also do the same with the Apple phones/products...). PA is obviously bought by Samsung... I saw numerous videos showing that S5 have lousy video stabilization. Also, I did it for myself - yesterday!! This same comparison. I have G2 and I went to store and did little live action comparison and in short - came up with opposite results that this above... Who's to say that on the right is G2?

Samsung rules? Not in camera, design & build quality, and sound quality. But they're very well balanced.

Nokia is dead and gone. It is Microsoft Mobile now. To go a little further than FOS, people care even less now. The tiny bit of sympathy they used to have for Nokia wasn't part of the acquisition. Sorry.

Xperiablog isn't a biased site. They post Xperia related articles, whether they are positive or negative. That test was not made by Xperiablog (they don't make their own tests). It was made by

You are a Samsung hater! Nothing you say about Samsung matters. I like Sony since PS1but my principal is always to buy a brand that gives me the best value. Samsung is just that. Plenty of features I world use , a support center near both my home and workplace. Every Samsung device come with plenty of free gifts so that I keep buying Samsung. Really to buy Sony or LG or HTC I will get less value. That's why the world choose Samsung over others.

It is not surprising that the Z2 has better video stabilization than the S5 or M8. Because as far as i know Sony Digital SteadyShot is one of the best video stabilization, just look at the latest Sony action cam. The digital SteadyShot requires the pixel count to be increased to allow the image to move on the sensor while keeping reference points within the boundaries of the capture chip. So in theory Z2 video stabilization will always be better than the S5.

If you read the article you would realize that the video is not come from xperia blog. When it comes to camera DoXMark is much more trusted than PA, GSMA and several other sites.

Hey Chris, I couldn't help but to notice the cameras seeming to point in different directions during the filming. Did you not hold them together to ensure they endured the exact same vibrations, or is it just a function of some weird digital stabilisation trick? I ask because depending on prefered arm, you stabilise it differently yourself. It could also be subconscious preferential treatment. Holding the devices together in an overlapping fashion negates this effect. As many variabels relating to human error and bias needs to be excluded as possible.

The device were, in fact, overlapping.

Great, thanks! That's some Grade A stabilisation trick in motion then.

Agree. Seems like the testing methodology was a little inadequate. Mounting both on a board, and holding the board would have been a better test.
