For a limited time, Verizon Edge will allow you to upgrade your phone after 30 days

Last week, Sprint dropped its One Up early upgrade plan and on Sunday, Verizon announced some changes to its similar Verizon Edge program. Big Red will now allow you, under certain circumstances, to update your phone after only 30 days. The caveat is that your current handset must be at least 50% paid off. New customers will have to undergo a credit check and Verizon's pre-paid accounts are not eligible for the plan...

It does seem like quite the joke. How does one pay down their handset by 50% in 30 days time? Especially when the amortization was over 24 months.

Unless they gave you a trade in allowance at least equal to more than half, I don't get this. They can easily turn around and resale the device used for about 75% of it's value. I'm sick of VchittyW's continued consumer unfriendliness. Especially not letting us unlimited users take advantage of a program like this. I really hope Tmo succeeds and doesn't get bought out. Because I would like to see them expand their coverage area so I can jump ship to them.

Verizon disguises the plan to make it look like you're only paying 50% of the price of the phone.

Sounds great unless you are self-insured by keeping your old phone as a backup.

Zero interest. Why pay in full up front when you can make no interest payments for however long? Since it's financed you can pay it off early if you want, and get a new phone.

On the flip side, paying up front with a credit card can get a free warranty extension and other benefits.

This is what i hate about Verizon. The upgrade choices are a joke. All Verizon customers should just buy full retail phones at a Best Buy or other providers just to put pressure on Verizon to come up with better options.

Hm. I don't get your logic. How would buying from BEST BUY at full retail hurt Verizon or any carrier. There is little to no markup in phones even at Full Retail since after 6 months there discounting them to rid of older models unless your an Apple of a Galaxy. And if I did buy a Full Retail phone from BEST BUY and got Verizon service there still getting my money at a higher profit rate cause Verizon didn't buy the device... BEST BUY did.

id rather just do the 2 year contract..get the phone for almost free then if u dont like ur service just pay the $350 and leave..still alot cheaper than paying $700 for a phone just to stay outta contract...plus verizon still charges u the same plan price (which are high) if u bought under contract or bought the phone at full retail .....the reason why plan prices are so high is to offset the money lost by VZW for selling u a $700 for $50...now if u buy ur phone full retail thats fine but VZW is still charging u the "offset"...this is what ALOT of people dont understand and think that they are getting a deal or around something in which they are not but in fact getting rip off even more!

It looks cheaper. But here's the breakout for that. I'm assuming the customer is new to Verizon.

An iPhone 5S is $199.99 on a 2Yr Contract / $649.99 full retail for the 16GB model.
Activation Fee is $35.00.
Early Termination is $350.00 (Decreases by $10 per Month of Service, no less than $150)

If you add that up. That equals $584.99.

But, you would have to re-activate the line again. So thats another $35.00. So, now your at $619.99. Plus there is no sales tax on this so you could add $199.99 + 7% sales tax $13.99. So, all together you would have paid $633.98.

If you bought the phone outright at $649.99 you would have paid $649.99 + $35.00 Activation Fee + Tax at 7% which is $45.49 = $730.48.

You save roughly $100. Considering you don't save anything with Verizon for paying Full Retail for a phone is normally never a good idea to do it. So, your mileage will very on the device since I picked the most expensive Full Retail $199/2yr phone.

There's a word so called freedom. If I have that money, and I purchase the phone I like with retail price, then I enjoy my freedom. Plus, you even have a choice to go to VZW loyalty plan which is not listed on the website, but truly for long term customers. You truly save more than your calculation. So please google or bing VZW loyalty plan.

The loyalty plan is mostly for single line subscribers. Its a save offer more than a loyalty plan. The catch to that is it adds a 1yr to your contract expiration date. Good deal though... If i remember its 60$ for Unlimited Talk/Text and 2GB of data. Compared to 100$ on Share Everything.

I understand your freedom. Who doesn't. I actually like EDGE. For people that want to change phones its a good option. Sure, it costs more. But, so it beats being stuck with a device for 2 years.

The cold fact is that in the end you are paying full and I mean the fullest retail price for the phone. In 2 year the phone value will drop at least 40% (if anyone still wants that 2 years old crap phone by todays standard phone cycle) and yet you paying full 100% for the phone because you signed a contract. How stupid is the average American?

PS: Btw if you are struggling to pay a smartphone in full at one time, then maybe you should not get that phone and better invest your money. Using future money gets you nowhere.

EDGE is not a 2 year contract. It's a 24month payment plan but it is not designed for you to keep the phone for 24months. After 12 months of payments, you can trade the phone back into Verizon and start another EDGE or you can re-up for 2 years on contract.

EDGE, JUMP, NEXT and whatever Sprint is calling there's now are not designed for you to keep your device.

You have choice on whatever carrier you want raise your flag for except for TMo who only offers there JUMP.
