Essential Phone now supports YouTube's zoom-to-fill feature

YouTube's zoom-to-fill feature available on its Android app is designed for those phones carrying an aspect ratio higher than the 16:9 seen on older phones. Videos shot for 16:9 screens end up with black bars on the top and bottom (at least in landscape orientation) on the taller displays. Using zoom-to-fill, the video is pushed out to fill the edges replacing the black bars.

One phone with a larger than 16:9 aspect ratio that had yet to support YouTube's solution was the Essential Phone. With a resolution of 1312 x 2560 (or 19:10), those watching 16:9 videos from YouTube on the device had to deal with the bars. Note we used the past tense. That's because today, the zoom-to-fill feature appeared on most Essential Phones. Again, not all units received the update, but quite a few found that they had to uninstall the YouTube app, install it again, and clear the cache before the feature appeared.

Now that Google has started pushing out this feature for Essential Phone users, allowing them to stream 16:9 YouTube videos without having to face the ignominy of having to deal with twin black bars, we have just one question for the search giant. Where is the Dark Theme for YouTube that you promised to Android users?
