Dong Nguyen, the creator of Flappy Bird, admits the game is down as "it was just too addictive"

0. phoneArena posted on 11 Feb 2014, 09:33

Dong Nguyen, the independent developer behind Flappy Bird, gave his first public interview after his creation became a viral hit. He disclosed the reasons why Flappy Bird is no more and denied the existence of any legal issues with Nintendo. The 29-year-old Vietnamese said that the real reason for the removal of his notoriously-irritating game was its addictiveness. Flappy Bird "was designed to play in a few minutes when you are relaxed" and not "an addictive product", which turned out to be a real problem. Nguyen admits that in order to cope with the issue, he decided to take the game down. "It's gone forever," he states...

What he said made sense but the same time it's kind of dumb... But it's his game, so he can really do what he wants with it

I respect him a lot for doing this. It is his own creation and I think he should have the final say on its continued distribution. I wish him luck in his endeavors.

He still is. Even though the game is no longer available to download, he still gets a slice of the ad revenue being generated by people playing the game. He'll still be getting paid for many more months to come.

This is not the real reason, there is something that he is not going to tell us about this game, Who in name of GOD would remove something that is source of money in these days. Does nor make any sense to me. If he didn't want money, there is many people that need help, he could help him. At the end of the day i think he is selfish.

I am positive this is a statement he is only feeding the press, but is probably far from the truth behind closed doors. If he makes another popular game he is going to take it down as well, haha please.

So true. He has a DAMN ODD philosophy.

Why would you even think of being a game developer if you don't want people to go nuts on the games that you develop? Oh please!

That is just a lame reason given by him for taking the game down.

Money, unfortunately, is the very essence of almost everyone's lives, without it modern society don't and can't exist. Even billionaires need more. I woke up in the wake of dawn so just to get to work on time, for a few dollars. If he's that genuine, he should take over tobacco companies and shut them down.

I just think this guy must have received pressures from some individuals or companies who weren't happy about his game making that huge amount of cash.

So he'll keep making games, but if they become successful and make him money then he'll wipe his hands clean again? Seems like a strange business model.

Definitely something fishy going on. If it was about earning too much money, he could've sold the program to someone else or just released it as an ad-free app. Or, if it was about addiction, he could put limits on how much a person could play in a certain time frame. Obviously, it's neither of those. I'm thinking it's a serious death threat or law suit that's he's trying to avoid. Maybe even a girlfriend issue. Women problems usually turn guys into irrational idiots.

There were rumors he got letters from Nintendo about the pipes and background likeness to Super Mario. He also has the Vietnamese gov't looking into his taxes. Not sure what his end game is most people would kill to make 50k a day just in AD revenue from a silly game.

Was it necessary to keep reiterating he's Vietnamese in this article? It doesn't make any difference if he is foreign or domestic developer, he's a developer/programmer period.

His answer is BS. I didn't play the game but I know one thing. The Vietnamese government wants a cut. I'm sure he was threaten. In a country like Vietnam you have to pay off officials.

this is classic hipster flavor of the month casual gaming hype, no one will play it in 6 months time, the psy of gaming, maybe Nintendo should hire this Vietnamese whizkid to kickstart their dwindling Nintendo wii u console demand ( against the dominate sony's ps4 and ms xbox one) as well it's probably their target market

unlike real classic gaming which can hold the test of time after 10 years even after 20-25 years and still be good
