Dismal flagship sales report reveals there isn't much money in Android

There have never been so many great phones at every screen size and in every price segment than this season, and never so great value-for-money phones. From the 5" waterproof Xperia M5 with 20 MP camera, through the $150 Redmi Note 2 that offers a 5.5" 1080p display and camera with phase detection autofocus, to the premium $700 Note5 which has the best screen-to-body ratio for its display size, there is something for everyone out there...

I wasn't making a racist comment until that schmuck dropped the f-bomb on me. "Commoners from developing countries". WTF is that? Those countries have been developing for 3000 years and they can't even develop a good flea collar. Cuba is one of the poorest countries on Earth yet they have the highest literacy rate in the world and they have old 1950s Chevys still running. They build rafts from chewing gum and cardboard to come to the US and make something of their lives. If it weren't for American companies building everything in their sh!thole countries they'd be eating elephant turds. F**k him and his rice paddy.

Yes, you are right, no one is forced to buy Apple overpriced product, but the sad part is that with Apple's great success on their overrated and overpriced products, it is killing many others smartphone OEMs who are producing great devices, so if the trends go on or even worse, WE the consumers will end up only able to buy an overpriced product without any good options. In short, Apple is killing the competition in smartphone industry with super overpriced product, which in the end the biggest loser is WE the consumers....

Stupid click-bate article. For a hardware company, there is no money in software per se. Android makes these guys plenty of money. After all, how many of your low paid writers for PA, will make $1M in your lifetime of working? Oh...NONE? Will Samsung probably just made several $Billion with the last click of the minute hand. let's use an example...Microsoft. If Microsoft took a 30% cut of all apps made for Windows like Apple does with apps for IOS, They would have 100 times the money Apple has. Apple charges just for providing a venue to showcase peopel who actually did the work while Apple basically does nothing. Its easy to make more money. Look. You make a phone using 2 year old hardware, sell it for 4 times what it costs you to make it. That doesn't mean no one else is making money. They may not be making as much, but if they werent making any; they'd be out of business. All these Android hate articles. if it wasn't for Android phones wouldnt be as good as they are because Apple would have the only phone. If it wasnt for Windows, PC's wouldnt be what they are because Apple would have prevented it yet again. Every technology that has use a more flexible platform has always offered more. However, they all ahve the same downside. The more cooks in the kitchen, the less money. Apple gets tp hoarde all their money. Why keep comparing Android to Apple? The business model if different. Android is for mass usage. It runs on far more devices than even Linux itself the foundation of Android. Open Source mean countless combinations and possibilities, while closed source means restrictive. $660 per device? How? The based iPhone only costs $649. So that means it mostly the more expensive models selling like 64GB models over 16GB because of such small storage. On average Samsung sells their devices for 50% more than what it cost them to make them. They arent greedy. everything isnt about profits. What you fanbois of Apple just dont see is simple. All that money and their devices are so behind everything else. Paying for an experience? Yep, experience how it is to get ripped off with subpar capabilities. You have to tailor your life to fit in their limited model. Some peopel acn, many dont. If Samsung was the only Android OEM, they'd be 3 times what Apple is. If Microsoft had made their own PC's from day one with Windows, we wouldnt need players like HP and Dell. Not every company si selfish. Not every corporation is about being on the highlight reel. Some just want to make good products. Samsung leads all industrialized nations as the only single company who makes lots of things. You focus is only on Samsung Electronics who even there does way more than any US company along. The only thing you can do to keep Apple's outdate ass in everyones face is to spend off these platform hating articles. The only thing you can brag about with Apple is how a major corp can sell sh!tty products to a mass much of morons.

Phonearena article writers can easily make over $1 million over their lifetime if they properly invest 15% of their income. Its not that hard, almost anyone can do it provided they invest the proper amount of their income.

Apple could sell 500M phones a year and have all the money in the world, but thatisnt going to make me buy one. Until an iDevice does what an Android does, or when a OSX laptop does what a Windows one does, is when I may buy one. But its never gonna happen.

Microsoft is not in trouble. Microsoft makes money on every android device sold, and they make money in many more areas than phones.

Here's the best part of all of this. - Apple makes all the money and people are sticking up for them. Yay, I give all my paycheck to Apple. While they are sitting there laughing all the way to the bank. Instead of supporting companies that bring real value! - Phone Arena posts article like this to get clicks, and guess what they are making money off you. All the while Im sitting here with my $300 Android phone that does everything all the others do. Good s**t!

Microsoft bailed apple back in the 90s when they were going bankrupt but I don't see them doing that on android industry.

No wonder Apple makes so much money on each phone when they essentially only make 1 phone every 2 years and rarely cut prices through the year.

Every year they keep using older hardware, the cost of that hardware goes down to a point its at it lowest. If Apple pays for 200M cpus and the first phone only saless 100M, well that leaves 100M cpus they still need to use. They are alreasy paid for so thus Apple doesnt have to spend money to buy new ones. Just use them in multiple products until they run out. Wen they run out they can them move up a bit. But if you notice, Apple will use the same hardware as much as 5 times or more. Example the 8MP camera came with the iPhone 4S. They use it in the 5, 5S, 6 and 6 Plus and they used it in the iPad too. all cost the same while Apple charges 3 times as much or more. 16GB of flash nand on retail costs less than $20 while 32GB is only $25. Apple charges $100 to go from 16 to 64 and $100 more for 128. Yet 128 Retails for as low as $70, so how much you think Apple is paying? You can buy a brand new phone wiith a 1080p display for $350 or less. Apple sells it for 799.99. Yet it doesnt do anything that $350 phone cant. Its all about status, looks and acceptance. Smasung has spent way to much money to market, and the results arent that high because they have compettion with Android. Once Song, LG, and Moto die off; Samsung will get the vast majority of those. Look at the numbers, if you combined all the Android OEMs into one, they all dwarf Apple by BILLIONS. Android has 80% of the world using ist devices. They are making money. In fact combined they all make far more money than Apple. Again the fans have nothing they can brag about with Apple outdated hardware and software. Here is what is funny. When Apple had the display quality advantage, the camera advantage, the build design advantage and even the soec advantage, that si all you could hear from them. Now that they no longer do, they try to downplay that and say that doesn't matter. Now Apple only high spec is money...so look at what they are pointing at. When Apple no longer has the money and spec advantage, what will the fans say. Because I recall the same exact thing when it was just Mac OS. After Windows came and all the PC OEM appeared, Apple was no longer the talk of the town.

Here is how the article is so misleading - It says Flagship sales. Apple doesn't make a flagship phone. In order to have a top phone, you have to make other phones to compare it too. Since Apple makes one model, there is no top Apple phone or bottom iPhoen becauses its their only phone. With Android OEMs, they make more money on the low end because most people can find what they want withouit spending so much money. If Samsung only sold the S and Note for example, while others sold lower costing phones, they would all run Samsung out of business. Now if Samsung could have been the only Android OEM they could reap similar profits like Apple. They cant because they have real competition. Samsung has beat all but Apple as far as money. Just liek Apple learned they weer never going to beat Microsoft because MS had a significant advantage Apple would never have. The only way Samsung could do the same would be to offer less phones and drive Tizen up to Android status, and eliminate all the Android OEMs. That's not gonna happen. Samsung knows this. Apple is the last one they need to beat. But fact is they don't. They are already the top dog with a platform that literally has 100's of players. Samsung sells 300M phones per year. 1/3 are made up of the Galaxy S and Note. Take 50% of all of Samsung other phones and the buyers either buy the higher end ones or move to lower end ones or get an iPhone. Considering Android sales ae still 3 to 1 over Apple, apple doesnt want more share because more share means more competition, menas lowering their prices and they dont want to or have to do this. Samsung has too because LG, Sony and others are forcing them down in pricing. The only reason the S and Note is so high is because those phones offer way more and do more and Samsung cant afford to sell them at a lose like Microsoft sold the Xbox at a lose for 5 years. Microsoft could do that because all their money is tied up in Windows and office. For Samsung Electronics, most of there money is smartphones and chips. If Samsung loses that, their TV and appliances isnt goign to hold them up. Just like the Mac didnt hold up Apple and if the iphone sells die Apple is also in trouble because all their eggs are in one basket. if Samsung loses phones they will still live on they will just have less money.

Samsung's low and mid range phone sales really suffered badly this year. The flagship sales also disappointed, which is why Samsung's stockmarket value has plummeted by over 40% this year so far.

It's because with the end of 2yr contracts, people cannot afford flagship devices (even at $20 - $30 per month). Not only that, but with people trying to cut their phone bills, they're going to get away from having to pay that extra $20 - $30 per month for flagship devices by opting for the $3 - $10 for mid-range devices (which now days are just as good, if not better than, flagships from just a couple years ago) if they go with an installment plan (or pay the $150 - $300 up front). That's why when I went to Verizon I decided to sign a 2yr contract, my bill is about $20 less that it would have been if I had signed up with Edge (and is about $30 less than I was paying with Sprint Easy Pay).

Um no duh. Samsung actually spends money on their fans. Apple doesn't spend a penny in them and just rape them. Of course 185 per phone isn't possible on Android. It's not possible on any mass market product. Samsung will survive with the 33 per phone. Take away Apples brutal raping of their sheep and 33 per was probably amazing at one point and anyone besides Apple would take that. I am sure Microsoft would kill for $33 per anything hardware related and they are still considered healthy.

Apple wouldn't make any money either...if their phones were priced within reason, but (at least in the USA), people are willing to throw down 800-1000 bucks for a stupid phone, so be it...isheep

Let's face it. There are but so many ways to make a phone device with approximately the same form factor. Thinner? Different color? Apple has created an entire ecosystem of people begging them to take their money so they can declare themselves cool. Android isn't perfect, but can be used in a simple way or a complex way, and all those companies, making wads of money or not, are paying their CEOs and employees. Makes me think they are just better at hiding their profits than Apple. Sounds like Apple thinks the game is "mine (bank account) is bigger than yours" - but they can't quite figure out what to do with all that cash. Rich in the bank, but can't figure out how to spend it. Demonstrates a lack of imagination. Oh, they do spend it on trying to patent anything and everything, then lock it up so no one can use it.
