Clash of the titans: iOS 7 vs Android 4.3 comparison

0. phoneArena posted on 19 Sep 2013, 15:31

One of the most heated "debates" within the wireless industry is the one between iOS and Android fans. In case it isn't obvious, we've put "debate" in quotes, because it's much more of a flame war, rather than a civilized debate, but anyway, you get the point. So here we are, not trying to start yet another flame war, but wanting to make it easy for users to find out what the meaningful differences between iOS 7 and Android 4.3 are. And without further ado, let's dive straight into it...

App integration is still missing from iOS . You still can't choose and change default applications (for example, you are stuck with safari, when clicking on a link). Still no widgets, still no file explorer and USB OTG, still no NFC. No swipe or alternative keyboard. No customizations (every device looks the same).

I can go on... This is not even a fully functional OS. It should not be compared with Android.

The looks depend on ones taste, but they are a bit childish.

because they dont want all that. It must have some drawback. For eg: App interagtion, the most obvious reason i can think of is malware or any kindof virus can steal data from another app. Why do you think a company as big as apple does not embrace NFC ? because it sucks! and they were working on Airdrop. In a wireless world, what kind of people want to "touch"

Usually apple has a vision of things in the future, hence they will avoid all things old and not required.

Your attitude is same as the one folks had in PC era, Apple is leading this tablet-era with a completely different philosophy.

Although I appreciate the unbiased middle of the road approach you took in this article.
I’m sure that we all agree based on the years of research and mounds of irrefutable scientific facts that oranges are indeed better than bananas. And there can be no other conclusion.

It's like a new launcher & icon pack.... Android phones can easily get this theme by installing Ilauncher & iNoty from playstore. I installed & it was nice, but I got bored in few days. Plus due to lack of widgets & my android notification panel while using Ilauncher+ iNoty, it was not productive. So uninstalled it. Using Apex launcher now.
I would say new look is fresh but not a major improvement over last iPhone. So people need to save their hard earned money & not waste on a minor improved device which costs so much...

Good Old conclusion! PA, Why do you even make this comparison to state the obvious?!!

Oh Wow! OK, It looks like PA tried to be unbiased here, and give a nod to Apple for trying. My impression is that they found iOS7 and 4.3 not even worth comparing (apples vs oranges, etc) and that's a correct assumption. There's nothing inherently wrong with iOS7. But it's not even in the same league with Android at this point in the game. It's like trying to compare a scooter against a chopper.

It seemed very tongue in cheek (although those who've never used both operating system may have a different view), which I found amusing and I laughed out loud here quite a few times. If I try and take this review seriously, it hurts because I'm either laughing too hard to do so, or I feel sorry for Apple. :-\ Or ^_^.. I'm not sure

The same kind of hurt I get from laughing while watching "Amish Mafia" (well the two times I tried at least)

in android... the notification and setting panel is accessible in any full screen app by swiping down the top edge of the screen...

jelly bean also has the two-finger swipe for quick settings...

You guys talk about customisation and widgets, the reason apple don't put that on there phone is because they are not marketing there phones to uses like you and I who use this site regularly. They market there phones for everyday people and everyday people don't really know how to customise and or use widgets like we do! Plus many everyday people don't even bother or know how to update there phones I know people who have old iphone and android devices that are stuck on old ios because they have no idea plus they only use what they got and don't care to much about anything else. As long as the phone does what they want as is easy to use they don't care and apple knows this so they don't bother with all that customisation stuff

Thats true. Apple mission is completely different. In post PC era, they dont want customization, rooting, installing, external mem card, removable battery - basically anything geek is avoided. The phone/tablet must be very simple to use and intuitive. The technology must be completely hidden from the user.

I run an iPhone 5 .... The only thing I saw in the comparison that I agree with is the simple fact that I can customize the Android system ... My IPhone works just fine BUT I can't even BUY at any price a simple on screen keyboard to replace the OEM one..

To be honest I make a mistake ... I will be going back to an Android with my next phone... Apple does meet my needs...BUT they sure do not meet my WANTS..

Lock and home screens:
Android Rocks in this area. Hands down to Android. You can customize what apps or setting you want to unlock into.

-Who looks at the title of the apps. People know what app they are clicking for. How many apps do you want in a folder anyways?

Quick controls and notifications:
Both are good at what they offer now that iOS7 is here. "In Android, the notification panel is often not visible if a full-screen application is running, which renders it inaccessible." -BS.

Customization features:
There is no Customization in Apple. Everything that are in the current iOS7 are stolen from jailbreak developers. All credit goes to them.

Dialer and Contacts:
Android: Dial by name in Dialer. Swipe to right to call in MSG app. Swipe to left to send a message.
I don't have time to scroll in Apple.

On-screen keyboard and messaging:
Both are good at type. Android has Swype. Never have to left a finger when typing.

Multitasking and support for multiple users:
Did you forget about Multview for Samsung S3, you can open two apps at once for viewing? Apps on Android are actually running once you minimize?

You don't have to use the gallery if you don't want to. Open the app and browse for your video.

Other things that you might want to let people know.
Different flavors of OS on Android. You can install different flavor of Android but you have to root. Don't be scared of this term. yes, it does void your warranty. yes, you can reset it and the manufacturers would never know. there. happy? You can use the Android device as an external hard drive.

You get better hardware with Android and a cheaper price. Android had Quad Core when Apple introduce Dual Core.

you can jailbreak Apple too and reset. The sad thing is, you have to wait for your version of iOS to be jailbroken. It can take months.

I came from Apple 3G, 3GS, 4, and 4S. I got tired of waiting for something different. I waited too long. I'm tired of their closed infrastructure. They stole ideas from people or hired developers to be created for them. The notification center was developed from the jailbreak communities which they employed the developer. Everything in iOS7 was last year. Marketed to be the leading in technology and designs. BS.

the blogger did about a 75 percent chance of a good detailed comparison. but being a fan of android I can tell you more exciting things about it. I was reading that yea yea the processor on the iPhone 5 s was better than the leading android phones. the GPU is too. but this new nexus 5 phone coming to all carriers in either November or October is gonna kill ! who wouldn't want complete control over their phone. customization, and openness? android will always do that. iPhones lack the fun things. plus what's with the screen size ? like a toys are us size phone for little girls. plus more developers on xda forums always come up with Roms, themes, apps, and modifications for these phones. people need to be more serious about technology for crying out loud. its 2013 currently. the future is here !

iOS7 combined with brand new iPhone 5S with it's doggy fingerprint feature is the best prove from Apple, that an Apple can become an excrement before it is bought and digested... +)))

"However, a double-slide is required in order to do that, which prevents the user from accidentally pulling out either of them. In Android, the notification panel is often not visible if a full-screen application is running, which renders it inaccessible." --> But custom Android UIs (I am using TW S4) allow access to the notification panel even if it's not visible, just swipe down from the top of the screen... This may not be accurate unless we're really talking about stock UI (which I'm not sure if this is really the case).

"There was a time when Apple Maps was ridiculed for its shortcomings, but things have changed since then. The fact of the matter is that Apple's maps application is now more reliable and has all the features one would expect out of a proper app of this kind." --> Not in my region/country. Google maps still more accurate, definitely a lot better. I hope nobody will troll which country I live in. Please do not be a racist.

As I've said apple don't make ios or iPhones for custimisation, futhermore they don't really care. The average everyday user doesn't care or even know how to customise and apple knows this, so they don't bother. for them it makes the phone less easier to use, what normal person uses themselves app drawers or widgets?
One other question if android is sooo good why do you have to spend so much time customising it,making it better? Why do some of you have to add swiftkey as a keyboard drawer/theme if everything is so good with android? I know you like the choice but if something was soo good out of the box wouldn't need customising right?
I don't seem to have this problem with ios everything seems to just work out of the box with not need for custimisation or new keyboards cas it all just works.

"iOS 7 users. The latest version of the platform features the so-called parallax effect, which shifts the background image depending on the angle, at which the handset is being held. That creates an illusion of depth and the effect is really nice in our opinion – pretty, yet unobtrusive."

How the F**K is that a customization?!?!?!?! iphonearena you are really terrible!!

Do you EVER have anything of significance to add to a discussion? Don't answer that; rhetorical question. Go back to blowing daddy's money, trust fund kid. When you can actually bring something of value to the discussion, then you will be welcome back at the grown-up table.

"..people who are into tweaks and modifications, those who like the feeling of having more control over their smartphone would be better off with Android. It may lack the elegance of iOS, but it is still a full-fledged contemporary operating system loaded with useful features..."

With the power of customization in Android, you can even customize the UI looks almost as same as IOS 7, so "lack of elegance"?! WTF!!

"people who are into tweaks and modifications"?! WTF!! Stop misleading ppl that Android is for grimmicks only, Android is same as any PC OS that allow you to do some basic customization like setup shortcut, wallpaper, taskbar, setup default application and etc. It ALLOW YOU TO CUSTOMIZE DOESN'T MEAN YOU HAVE TO, it give you the freedom to customize but not forcing you to do that.

My definition of "elegance" has to be different then yours.. I say call reception is elegant ....and my old Evo 4G worked in my home but my iPhone 5 sure does not

.I still miss how elegant my old EVO 4G was in comparison to my iPhone 5 everything visible easy to navigate and straight forward on the now antique android ...
