Keep in mind that you cannot post anything against the Chinese government on Weibo. It is a means of censorship, rather than a service for the world.

They aren't doing this for independence reasons. It's for censorship and antidemocratic purposes.. Any country can decide to make their own social media site. It's not that expensive.. In fact, I'd turn your statement around and claim it's rather brave to let your people run wild on foreign media and trust their intellect to make correct assertions of how the world works. The Chinese government is rather the cowardly one here. If they were really brave, they will let their weibo compete on a level playing field in the free market of Internet and ideas

I'm not surprised given how Twitter has been banning everyone who's not liberal and do not fully comply to leftist agenda. I hope the same happens to Facebook since they have been doing the same for years, VK is a great option.
