I'm guessing, US carriers are the worst among the rest of the world.. they will manipulate everything they could just to make money..

I'm sure carriers all over the world do that.
Kinda sad though, a law like this wouldn't really help in the US, our carriers all use different spectrums, you'd be lucky to get an AT&T device that'll operate on 2G on T-mobile. And Sprint and Verizon fuggedaboudit! Unless you want a blackberry i think.

true, the different spectrum thing is a problem for even unlocked devices but if many of these phones were unlocked, manufacturers would then be able to make US specific devices that could span all the spectrums, much like the same is done in China. I think it would work at the very least on cost because only one would be required here in the States.

Unfortunatly, even if all phones here were unlocked, very few phones would be usable on multiple networks because of frequency incompatibilities (though i've no idea if CDMA phones could work across carriers if they were not carrier locked). I still want them to all be unlocked though. I would even insist that only phones that support more than one carrier be sold, and that carriers offer 1 year and 18 month contracts as well.

i dont think we have such law in my country, but never mind as 100% of phones are sold unlocked through independent retail shops....

I'm from Costa Rica and last year in our country the telephone market just open allowing new company's to began to sell their services ,two companies Claro and Movistar are the ones that won the permits to work in our country and one of the condition that the agreement stated, was that the phones they were going to offer had to be unlock phones,so we are another unlock free phone country.

Now we need same type of policy in India...... Iphone 4s is being sold at outrageous price over here, and then also it come locked to particular carrier........ Now why the hell should my phone be locked to particular carrier, if I'm paying full price for it........ 16gb Iphone 4s cost abt. Rs. 45,000 or 865$; 32gb iPhone 4s cost about Rs. 51,000 or 981$ and 64gb iPhone 4s cost about Rs. 56,000 or 1077$.......... :(

It's the same deal in Israel already, welcome to the club Chile! However here the Carriers charge more than the private stores for the phones. So your'e better with just a sim anyway.
