This is a pretty horrific incident. I hope the families of those that were killed can at least eventually enjoy the rest of their lives, and I hope those that were injured will not be traumatized long term by this.

A peaceful world seems so easy to comprehend, but so difficult to achieve. Although most people do not believe in capital punishment, it really does no good for humanity to keep somebody like this alive in prison. Although it is true that revenge serves no positive purpose, an individual like this contemplated the consequences prior to making his decision and ultimately, knowingly, gave up hope on himself as a positive member of our global society. I don't like abandoning the hope of helping anybody, but we can't help somebody who has committed an action like this -- he is too far gone.

So basically: kill the f**ker?

Come now. You can't be so barbaric.

It's not about revenge. Not saying "kill the f-----".

The question is where do we go from here? What are our options? Should we keep him alive? What purpose would that serve?

I guess my overall point is that if someone commits a crime that warrants life in prison, capital punishment just makes more sense.

I think life in prison is 1000x worse than a death sentence but that's just me

I agree with you Eclipse, and that's why I think capital punishment might be the more reasonable way to deal with it. It is arguably more humane, it wastes less of the planet's resources, and it sure as hell is a lot cheaper. The only thing it doesn't do is deter criminals better than a life sentence would.

This is an entirely separate philosophical debate, but in my opinion, prison should be about reform. If the individual commits an act as heinous as this, like I said before, it is my opinion that he no longer wants to be a part of society and can't be trusted to be a part of society. He has forfeited that right. In this case, prison serves no purpose because the goal is not reform. I'm sorry if I sound cold or barbaric, but I just think I am being realistic and logical.

I totally agree with Penny. The same night of the batman shooting A person in the time next to me went into a local bar threatening to shot everyone. Luckily a office was near by and shot him first. My point is this guy has been in and out of jail since 75 for armed robbery impersonating an officer more then once. kidnapping at gunpoint. terrorist threats and much more. Everytime he would get arrested he would go to jail just to come out in a couple of years and do something worse. He should have been locked up for life. All states need atleast the three strike rule. for smaller crimes.

Why waste our tax dollars on prison - the guy is going to be able to get 3 square meals, playtime, use of the library....nooooo...I do not think so - send him to the Middle East.

Life in jail does sound worse but with life in jail there is always a chance to get out and your letting him live his life which he does not deserve too. If you told me he had to be kept in a cage shackled to the wall with maybe 3 feet of walking room then fine that would be worse. But in jail they get tv play sports can make friends with other criminals can have penpals and recieve porn and smoke cigs. can the people he killed do any of this. No. I believe that the worse the crime then the worse the jail should be as well. Id rather have death for a killer thou because in the end the public has to pay about 30 grand a year per criminal that is in jail. Now we have to pay this times about 50 since he is so young. It just put a drain on the economy. sorry if that sound insensitive but was he sensitive towards the people he killed.

I feel bad for the people who died and their families, and I am praying for them. But people forget that the killer had a family to. A perfectly sane family, who wonders as much as we do what happened and what is going to happen. I hope if they have to go with capital punishment, he at least gets a chance to tell his family why he did it. And tell them that he is sorry. I wold hate if I had a kid who went to jail with murder. I would wonder if it is my fault. So pray for the cictims, but dont forget to pray for the families.

Killing is never justified or reasonable. There is always, ALWAYS, an alternative. May not be EASIER, but the alternatives are there.

Anyone wondering if theatres will have to start having metal detectors like courthouses and some schools?
