Best new Android and iPhone apps of the week (August 11th - August 17th)

Another week has passed, and another heap of apps has been uploaded to the App Store and Play Store. For those who wish to try new apps on a regular basis, sifting through all of the new ones may be a daunting task. But fear not – we're here to help, as each week, we comb through the stores and pick some of the more eye-catching apps that are out there.

This week around, we have a fun musical app for iOS, which allows you to recreate the tunes in your head with zero musical knowledge. On the Android side, we have a freaky camera app, which allows you to record videos with parts of your face moved around. Of course, they are not the only ones on the list, so check below for details and do let us know – which ones did you download, did you like them? Also, if you know of a brand-new app that deserves to be in this list, but we overlooked – drop us a line and we will find a way to have it mentioned in the future!

New for iOS

Humtap

Price: free

Got a melody that you just can't get out of your mind, and you wish that you could turn in an actual composition? Humtap may help. The app lets you sing a tune into the iPhone, tap out a beat, then choose the style you want the musical piece to be in, and voilà – magic happens! Check out the video demo from the creators to see Humtap in action.

Straight Outta Meme Maker

Price: free

#StraightOuttaSomewhere is officially an Internet meme, with quite a lot of funny ideas already out there. If you are into the whole meme creating and sharing, you'd probably like to have this one on your phone – just in case you come up with something funny and want to build it on the fly.

Docs Offline

Price: $1.99

Calling the productive folk out there – this useful fellow will open both Microsoft Word and Open Office files for viewing and editing with no need for your iDevice to actually be online. Worth a check!

Stuff Worth Reading

Price: free

If you want to stay on top of pop culture, entertainment, fashion, sports, et cetera, Stuff Worth Reading is one of the websites you may have been frequenting. Well, the service now has its very own app on the App Store – check it out!

New for Android

Lip Swap

Price: free

Lip Swap lets you take a selfie, then mark a spot on the picture, which you would like to “replace” - for example, your eye. Then, you can record a video of your mouth talking in place of the eye, making for a weird, weird effect.

Tunnel Vision

Price: free

This photo app employs a lot of editable layers, which can be stretched, turned, and placed on top of each other to achieve various creative effects.

Landmarker

Price: free

Landmarker is a simplistic, white-on-black compass, which shows you the locations nearest to you, as per Google Maps. If you happen to see one of interest – tap its name and you will get directions to it.

Photo Editor HD For Instagram

Price: free

Marketed as a photo editor for Instagram, this app connects with the social media and aims to create 1:1 photos, so that they fit to Instagram's template. If you have too much “empty” space, either because your photo is longer vertically or horizontally, the app can add a background, or create a blurred effect from the photo to fill in the blanks. It's a bit heavy and ad-infested, though, we had some fun playing with its options. Give it a spin.
