It’s good to hear that Google follows Apple‘s lead. Let’s see who has implemented things better. So far, Apple has done quite a good job.

Still Loading...........................................​​.. ................................Still Loading.............................. App Crashes!!! Touchwiz (or whatever their bloatware is called these days) CRASHES...... Android's OS Crashes and has to restart!... Samsung phone can't take it anymore and catches fire!!! #Trolling

Who's lead did Apple follow in iOS 9, with iPad split view, slide over, and floating window? IOS 11, with screen off memo? Edge to edge screen, should I go on?

Jesus Christ, such butthurt. Who cares about what happened two years ago, right now Apple is the only big player that made a push into AR on such scale. Before that you had just some stupid camera apps that could display dinosaurs on the table

The AR push began well before Apple Google were already developing Project Tango And to many other startups to name But I'll name one, Flyby Media, they were also working on Project Tango Apple acquired them back in 2016 Apple megred their efforts with Metaio's work to form ARKit

Apple can thank Android for a lot of tech that's in the X. Wireless charging (which Apple is using slow charging) Fast charging (which you have to pay extra to use) Larger screen-to-body ratio (S8 has a larger screen-to-body ratio) Dual cameras Technically, Apple didn't start the AR revolution. Android did with Tango. Granted there are only a few phones that support it.

ARCore needs Vulkan graphics support which was introduced last year with Android 7. It also needs half decent cameras with fast enough processors to handle each image frame manipulation, which is needed for smooth AR results on screen. Since the GPU has to handle Vulkan graphics APIs. All high end smartphones for the last 2 years have GPUs that support Vulkan graphics. Even lots of mid range devices and some low end devices can handle Vulkan graphics as well these days. So at the end of the day I can easily see lots of Android smartphones going to run ARCore apps.

Well-Manicured-Man ARCore is really a trimmed down version of Tango that isn't relying on all the Tango sensors. BTW Tango was worked on for years. So now ARCore isnt using a depth sensor or IR cameras, which helped to make Tango devices are much more accurate and would work in low light conditions. Apple's ARkit and now Google's ARcore will not be as accurate or will work under the same conditions that Tango could work under. Both these kits rely on regular cameras found on most smartphones. But it will still bring it to the masses, which at the end of the day is a great thing.

Quantity doesn't matter. What matters is quality content for AR and quality of the devices that will support AR.

They can worry about quality later, now it's all about the sheer numbers in order to get developers on board. Both ARcore and ARkit are the basic frameworks for AR, eventually things will pick up from there once enough developers starts to develops for them. It's a chicken and a egg problem right now.

Not really that can also set the whole project back if it is not foo quality content.unless there ripping Apple off I would imagine they have somthing that is almost done.

Google's been working on AR for a few years now and it's supposedly gonna run on a wide variety of devices and doesn't require the latest Android version to install it either. That's apparently the key point to making it widely available for Android.

I am glad Google found the template (thanks Apple) to roll out AR to millions of devices, we all know project tango went nowhere for 3 years.

You mean, project tango? why did they drop that like its hot and embrace the Apple template with ARcore? Project tango went nowhere for 3 years, now after getting the template on how to do it right, they are announcing millions of devices in 2018, thanks again to Apple showing them the better way to do it. Gotta give it to Google, they were fast on that one.

Apple are lucky Google started their work on Project Tango so long ago Otherwise Flyby Media's AR work wouldn't have advanced as quick and ARKit wouldn't be ready yet Google made the same mistake Samsung made with Intrinsity

Yet looking at the situation. If you look at the number of apps that google has to develop AR for tango powered device. It isn't that many. And most of it is garbage.

Pretty sure a lot of stuff in ARKit/ARCore can be traced back to project Tango. So thanks, Google. Also, Tango is a lot more sophisticated than ARkit/core, but most of the extra's aren't needed for day to day consumer apps. And you must be a fool to think Google wasn't already working on this version. Besides projects don't always need to result in consumer versions, they can be used as a learning curve which Google tends to do a lot.

It was apple who developed the ARkit. Which is a software version that enables all iphone 6s plus, and above, iphone 5se, and ipad pro. To be able to run AR optimized apps. Since it supports starting from iphone 6s, which was released 2 years ago. Many of those who owned them are now enjoying AR apps. And FYI, google only has developed tango AR. Which is both a hardware and software platform that requires a specific camera hardware designed for AR. And also, the software instruction set is limited since it needs the extra camera. Only two device were known to have tango AR. And the apps ain't that many.

Great. More snapchat grade AR. Good thing Google has the hardware and patents in place already to advance AR quickly when interest grows.

In a way AR has been around for a little while now with little apps here and there but I think the point is to dedicate a part of your phone to run AR and have it go to the next level and not just a limited gimmick.

Whale well wake up Google ! There are hundreds of millions of iPhones which can run AR already, and they can run it really well. Even I was forced to try - saw an app update with *ARKit support...* and boom they got me.
